oh you’re not kidding
I will try to upload some of my timelapses here in the future, I have been doing so on twt, but I think you guys might be interested in that too?
Anyway here the timelapse for my last painting; realism to me is primarily about patience, since you don't have to think about stylizing a reference or any other sort of shape design. I try to build a good foundation to paint, and then chip away at the rest. One of the things I say most often is that it's beneficial to build a good foundation and not rush ahead, no matter what you are working on. Having a stage of the painting that looks good to revert to whenever, in case of a mess up. Especially since any mistake that is made early on, will cost time to fix later, so in all of my processes it's important to me that I am happy with each stage. I used a basic hard edge brush with opacity, and some default airbrush. To me most of the challenge in art comes from the stylizing and different techniques bit, so on a personal level, realism is one of the easier exercises for me to do. Observation in general is what I regard as the most important skill in art. If you can understand/dissect what you are looking at, you can replicate anything, once you have built the necessary motor skills through practise. A way to practise observation in itself is trying to be aware of your suiroundings IRL, trying to take mental note of how the light catches on certain surfaces, what happens to the colours in your surroundings, etc. Or looking at other's art and trying to think through their process. Anyway that's enough yapping from me for now lmao, I'll just post thoughts on other processes in the future too, especially the ones where I have to make more deliberate artistic choices Have a good day o7

my crackpot theory is that people excuse all the insane shit house says because we’ve gone so far into the fanon hole that people genuinely believe house is canonically queer and that the “reclaiming slurs” mentality applies to everything house says because if he’s queer and disabled somehow he’s allowed to be everything-phobic and ableist and an asshole
has anyone considered that it was probably her house too. where else was she supposed to put her chintz?
things in fic I'm used to people kind of faking their way through writing about:
the city of los angeles
the city of new york
sex
how drinking alcohol works
how getting high works
how a child of any age speaks
how nuclear physics work
how [my job] works
how debilitating being shot in the shoulder is
how hypothermia works
things I have never before seen someone fake their way through writing about, until today:
what french toast is
read through the notes on this one trust me
Here's some of the notes, starting with the things multiple people brought up:
SHRIMP COCKTAIL:
banahbanah: #flashback to that one fic where Peter Parker frets about drinking shrimp cocktail because of the alcohol
generaldeliciousness: adding: what a prawn/shrimp cocktail is
#why is your character turning it down because they're under 21 #do you think prawn cocktail is a cocktail #this lives in my brain rent-free constantly #the rest of the fic was so normal #and good enough that i'll still re-read it #but bro
And then many, MANY, people wondering if this was actually authour mistake, since Peter really would do this!
POMEGRANATES:
zhajhassa: #haha where's that post that was like someone describing someone eating a pomegranate but they ate it like an apple
thornhands: #once someone wrote persephone biting into a whole Pomegranate #had to stop and stare at a wall for a minute
sungsingsanguine: I once saw someone very confidently write about a character eating slices of pomegranate.
FRUIT TREES:
zagreuses-toast: #given a very endearing glimpse into a writers blindspots by seeing them describe someone sitting under a ''pineapple tree''
salatrash: I remember something about picking watermelons... OF A FUCKING TREE
baander: #cranberry trees
DOUGH/BATTER:
maycelium: #I'm a chef so I'm really used to people not accurately describing how to cook food #But I was surprisingly flabbergasted when someone was writing making a cake and was kneading it. Which uh #Not necessary for cake. It was interesting for sure but just bizarre
livebloggingmydescentintomadness: #the one that drove me nuts was when a character set aside a batch of PASTA DOUGH 'to rise' #pasta doesn't have yeast!! #it does need to REST but it will never RISE #you do not want an airy crumb on your noodles
lovesodeepandwideandwell: #THE ONE WHERE THEY MADE COOKIES BY LADLING BATTER INTO A TRAY
Some other topics:
these are great
i don't read a lot of fic anymore but i'm forever thinking about stephen king's 'it' where the characters went into a chinese restaurant and were greeted by a waitress wearing a kimono
