"A New Bike" (1960s Soviet Tajikistan)
Andrei Mikhailovich Ponomarev
yesterday we stopped in lausanne (the lausanne). we ate pizza and eskander threw rocks. it was raining and cold. he’s amazed that there are crosswalks here (unlike in syria)…it’s funny that is the main thing he noticed. they are both a bit afraid of riding in cars. they took turns vomiting on me in the car from beirut to damascus.
we were questioned at the border on account of me being turkish and having usa residency but after waiting a bit and paying a bit more it seemed no problem. we ate very little and very carefully. now there is cholera, which sounds rediculous but unfortunately it’s so.
what i had forgotten about home is how small the sidewalk is. aboud and his mom were surprised about the hills. so goes beirut to damascus to istanbul to france and then back to istanbul. eskander keeps yelling üsküdar! 😆 and his new attachment item is a model of galata tower from a tourist shop. he’s obsessed with hazerfen ahmed çelebi.

today i read (it seemed very speculative, but still) about russia wanting to recruit soldiers from syria. are you fucking serious? imagine one of the countries that bombs your country for a decade asks you to fight for them in another country. is this the ultimate ‘give me the confidence of a mediocre white man situation’? all jokes aside, it’s disgusting. authoritarianism is disgusting.
This picture from Syria protesting war in Ukraine actually made me tear up.
Abandoned by the world, destroyed and still having enough compassion to think about others.
The artist is Aziz Asmar from Idlib. He does many murals within Syria. He also did one memorializing George Floyd in support of the Black Lives Matter movement.
