anyways (I say this as someone who is deeply critical of the united states government, military, unchecked capitalism, police, etc) I am SICK of people treating america as if it has no cultural value or positives so….. I love u 85 million acres (bigger than italy) of national parks. I love u harlem renaissance. I love u groundhogs day. I love u sweet tea and fried chicken and jambalaya. I love u apple cider donuts and maizes on crisp autumn days. I love u 95k miles of coastlines and new england fisherman and hand knitted sweaters. I love u halloween where millions of people dress up and give candy to strangers and carve jack o’lanterns. I love u small talk and small towns and potlucks and bringing over casseroles to your struggling neighbors. I love u cowboys and ranch hands and arizonian cactus. I love u appalachian trail and dirtbikes and divebars. I love u sparklers and fireflies. I love u mark twain and toni morrison and emily dickinson and henry david thoreau. I love u rock n roll i love u bluegrass and hippies i love u jimi hendrix and nirvana and CCR and janis joplin. I love u victorian houses and jonny appleseed and john henry and mothman and bigfoot. I love u foggy days in the pacific northwest and neon signs and roadside attractions. I love u baseball and 1950s diners and soft serve. I love u native american art and pop art and poptarts. I love u blue jeans and barbecues and jazz musicians
I would genuinely love to hear what a resident of china or russia loves about their home bc I’m not a fucking bigot and I know a government doesn’t define a culture but thanks for ur exposing yourself babe xoxo

i get that americans love their cultural imperialism, but it really does piss me off that june is “international” pride month just because something happened in the united states.
in aotearoa, june isn’t our pride, it’s theirs. marsha p johnson and sylvia rivera are their historical figures, not ours. the phrase that “you owe your rights to Black trans women” is true there, but here we owe our rights to (mostly) Māori historical figures. i have the freedoms i do because of the legacy of an entirely different set of people operating in an entirely different context at entirely different times.
But because of american cultural imperialism, most queer people in Aotearoa don’t even know our own queer history. Carmen Rupe, Ngahuia Te Awekotuku, the Dorian Society, Gillian Laundon, Georgina Beyer, and the Wolfenden Association are some of our queer history. We should know their names! we should know what they did for us! but because of the power of the american imperial machine, we don’t.
our national pride month should be july, the month that the Homosexual Law Reform Act passed in 1986. our two largest cities hold their pride festivals in february and march, respectively. american queer history has very little (or nothing, depending on who you ask) to do with our queer history. anecdotally, from my own queries, queer youth in aotearoa know more about american queer history than our own.
anyway, happy pride, americans. i’m truly sorry that most of you don’t see the negative impact your nation’s culture has on the rest of the world. and to the rest of the world reading this, try searching for your own country and culture’s queer history, don’t accept the american narratives as your own. we deserve our own histories divorced from the cultural hegemony of the USA.
Yet another new study debunked the basis for the anti-trans sports bans. It was never about sports but for creating legal avenues for exclusion and abjection. This is one of the largest analyses ever conducted, involving 52 studies and 6,485 trans people. Read the study here.
post so nice had to reblog it twice and force it down everyone's throats
At minimum about 4.5 thousand people liked this without reblogging it.
We gotta fix that.
Progress.
Onwards!
I can't access the full paper, but their conclusion is right there in the abstract:
While transgender women exhibited higher lean mass than cisgender women, their physical fitness was comparable. Current evidence is mostly low certainty and has heterogenous quality but does not support theories of inherent athletic advantages for transgender women over cisgender.
A couple of years ago I was tidying a rarely-tidied storage space, and found this painting that I bought long pre-transition (and then hid away, and eventually forgot about), because I had been captivated by the beauty of it, and wished dearly that it could be me, and settled for "in another life", and now, it's basically me (if I put my hair up):

Every pride, you must reblog this. No exceptions
I love that four different people on my feed scheduled this joyous person to reblog by 8am on June 1. I look forward to seeing this a dozen more times today.

Random AU where Stiles has been going into the preserve since he was born, first with his mother and then alone.
Where Stiles knows every nook and cranny, every path, every slope, better than anyone in town. Perhaps even better than the former residents, the Hale family.
Where Stiles knows the names of every pet in Beacon Hills and can get even the fiercest dogs to roll over for belly rubs.
Where Stiles has in-depth discussions with cats and shares his lunch with squirrels, long after it went from 'aww what a cute kid' to 'what a weirdo'
Where Stiles is bullied for his 'quirks' but never fights back, just runs, nimble as a deer.
Where Stiles flees to the preserve, always stopping just inside the treeline and facing his pursuers who will always linger a few feet back from the trees, never stepping beyond the boundary.
Where the one time someone did follow him in, they were missing for two days and came out babbling about being chased by herds of deer and of giant wolves with red eyes that followed the strange teen as docile as lambs.
Where Stiles never answered the question of what happened, just smiled.
for the record im not technially 100% anti-AI, in the sense that its a broad category of tech being lumped under one umbrella term so it feels over-zealous to say i hate all of it all the time forever. but i also think trying to discuss what it actually IS good for is difficult right now when i cant take one step without something trying to convince me to use chatgpt to summarize my life and speed up my hobbies and turn my friends into chatbots and optimize my life into oblivion. i am certain there is nuance to the topic but can we stop cramming the square peg into the round hole before you start trying to sell me on the legitimate benefits of the square peg. please.
Neural Nets have existed for decades and are genuinely useful. It's a form of AI that recognizes patterns, and can do stuff like identify cancer cells, tell whether an egg is fertilized or not, detect fraud, and optimize routes.
Those are Expert Systems, tuned to do exactly one thing. If you (say) ask a medical expert system a question about financial law, it's useless. The autopilot that flies a 787 has no idea how to drive a truck on the freeway. A Coulter Counter is excellent at identifying lymphocytes in a blood sample but can't predict the next card in a blackjack game.
And so on.
The problem with so-called generalized AI (AGI) is that we don't have that yet. It doesn't exist. It MIGHT some day, but AGI has been "10 years away" since the 1980s. The goals keep moving as we learn more about how people and machines process data.
But the current crop of AI techbros have been selling generative Large Language Model AI (LLM) as AGI because generative systems do a good job of faking it. There's no actual thought going on, merely the illusion of thought via predicting the next word in a sentence accurately.
If you let a human toddler listen to 800 hours of YouTube car influencer videos, that toddler might end up sounding like a car influencer. They'd parrot horsepower numbers and 0 to 60 times, mention EV range and MSRP numbers.
But they wouldn't understand any of it.
That's ChatGPT.
And yeah, it's worse than useless because it doesn't even know when it's lying or hallucinating. It just babbles convincingly until you stop it.
But for techbros to make money selling that as "AI"? It's the perfect scam, especially if you don't understand how it works.
I fucking hate it.
I actually do think we should discourage women from becoming housewives. Do not become financially dependent on a man. That's how a lot of women ended up dead over the years. A man gets violent suddenly and you have to choose between homelessness or potentially dying at his hand because you have an enormous gap in your resume and no degrees or certifications or anything that will help you pursue a career that will allow you to be financially independent. He owns your bank account. His name is probably the one on the car. Try and leave and he can report it stolen. Where will you go then?
Don't become a housewife.
And if you do become a housewife, take steps to protect yourself. Make sure you’re legally married, for starters; stay-at-home girlfriends have very little legal recourse to claim their partner’s assets in a breakup. Make sure your name is on the house deed/rental agreement, and have your car in your name, even if your spouse is paying for it. Have your spouse transfer money every month into an account solely in your name, so you can buy yourself things without needing permission, but also so you can save up to leave if needed.
If your spouse fights you on any of this, then don’t quit your job. The tradwife to poverty pipeline is real, and so is financial abuse.
also, many women/people experience controlling behaviour and domestic violence from their partner for the first time during pregnancy. don’t risk thinking “he’s just stressed, it’ll get better when the baby comes” because it won’t. neither you and your child will ever be safe with that man. get out as early and safely as you can
the state does not need to assign you a sex, nor does it need to keep inalterable record of it btw
a very interesting terf objection to this one boils down to "but how would the state know who to protect?" because it speaks to the incredible privilege of being in a class the state actually ever remotely wants to protect. most oppressed groups do not want the state to have a registry of them, lol
the patriarchy has done a great job convincing white cisgender women that it's in their best interests to maintain it
So I have this theory that when Stiles was a baby, Hales used to babysit him. Because the Hales were clearly some of the very influential families in Beacon Hills, and the sheriff being an officer, they must clearly know each other (at least in my head they are)
Of course, Stiles doesn't remember it because he was like one year old. But Derek remembers, so does Peter. But neither of them ever mentions anything because of the whole drama that is happening in the town.
But finally, things have calmed down. Everyone has graduated, and Hale House has been renovated. Peter is sane and forgiven, and everyone is having a pack night, and somehow the conversation is about how much of troublemakers they were as kids, and suddenly everyone wants to know what kind of a baby Derek was. Of course, Derek refuses and threatens everyone with his eyebrows and then leaves the room, so they turn to Peter. And Peter is like, 'Oh, he was such a big crybaby and mama's boy.' and everyone is like 'NO WAYYYY.' Then Peter proceeds to tell stories of baby Derek, who would cry while watching Bambi and wouldn't let anyone change the channel. Everyone laughs at that, and then Peter looks at Stiles and says, 'That was why he used to call you his Bambi and carry you around all the time, never letting anyone else hold you.' The room fell silent after that, everyone confused and surprised, wondering what the hell Peter was talking about. "Oh, you probably don't remember, but we used to babysit you," and everyone is like 'No, you're just trying to pull our leg' and boos him. But Peter is like, 'No, we really did, Talia was close with your mother, so she dropped you here sometimes.' when stiles still denied it Peter went and came back with an album saying he has proof.
And among the very few photos they managed to save was a photo of eight-year-old Derek sitting on a couch holding baby stiles. Derek had this full-tooth smile, and Stiles was in this adorable brown onesie, nibbling on a wolf plushie's ear as they both looked at the camera.
Everyone is so surprised to see the photo, especially Stiles, who has no recollection of it. But he remembers that plushie, which he still has. Peter went on to say that Stiles liked Derek the most and would only calm down when in Derek's arms. How Derek will fight with Laura whenever Laura says it's her turn to watch over Stiles, and how that plushie was Derek's favorite and he only shared it with Stiles, and how he didn't even let Cora, his own baby sister, touch it.
Then Derek walks into the room, and everyone bombards him with questions and the photo. Derek chases Peter around the house for telling them all this. But Stiles is a bit silent, trying to digest what he heard. When he goes back home, he digs out that plushie. Then he asks his dad about whether they knew Hales, and Dad tells him how close they were and how much they supported Stillinski's when Claudia fell sick, and how devastated he was when they died.
This kind of changes how Stiles used to look at Derek. He brings the plushie to Derek and asks whether he wants it back. But Derek is like no, he gave it to Stiles because he wanted him to have it. And upon Stiles' prodding, share some of the childhood memories.
In my head, this will bring them closer, and it is one of the reasons Derek always had such a high tolerance for Stiles' antics and protected him all the time.
