I've seen a lot of posts about how Julien pretends not to care but clearly cares about Occtis, which is very delicious, but I also think Occtis' whole "I am tired of pretending I give a shit about you" thing is equally fascinating. I can't stop thinking about how right before that he says, "I am tired of trying to placate your anger towards me. I am tired of trying to do the things that I think you want me to do so you'll stop trying to kill me." Occtis, as has become very clear, was abused growing up, and probably learned to do exactly that - placate people's anger, do the things they want him to do - to try to avoid the abuse. That could be a whole other post but I think it's really interesting that he snapped and said that to Julien. He's afraid that Julien is going to hurt him, maybe even kill him, presumably because of him being a Tachonis. I wonder if that had anything to do with him asking Julien not to kill Koral - he was desperate for proof that a member of his family didn't despise him, but I wonder if any part of him wanted to see if Julien was capable of forgiving a Tachonis enough to let them live. And all of this after Occtis saying that only two people care about him and Julien not saying anything to contradict that. I don't think Julien is the only one trying very hard not to care. I think Occtis is terrified of caring about other people he is not certain already care about him (Thaisha and Thimble) because he's terrified of being hurt (again), so it's a whole lot easier to tell Julien and to tell himself that he doesn't give a shit. But like Julien, he certainly didn't act like someone who doesn't care - he jumped right back into his family's house to save Julien when his shadow dragged him back. Two people who are starting to care about one another and refuse to admit it because they're terrified of caring and I think that's very fun.

Julien killing Koral is such a good character moment - that whole scene. He's made it a life goal to kill as many Tachonis as possible, but because Occtis asked him to, he was willing to talk to Koral first and maybe spare his life. It's only when he realizes Koral was an unrepentant actor in the massacre of his family and home that he decides to kill him.

The Julien Davinos of two weeks ago was so angry at his losses that he wouldn't have hesitated, but he's calmed down just enough, bonded just enough with Occtis, that he waited to be sure that Koral deserved to die before killing him. I said ages ago that everything Julien does has to be viewed through the lens of someone furious in grief, and that he would probably change as time went on, and I think we're see the start of that.

Is Tumblr aware of Count Binface, current hope for our nation?

Let me explain:

Grotesque fascist grifter, Nigel Farage, is the leader of Reform, the racist far right party he created because UKIP got what it wanted (Brexit) and it sucked.

Having tried and failed to be an MP many times (but somehow getting more screentime than any Liberal Democrat or Green politician), he finally succeeded in the last election because people were so overwhelmingly pissed off with the Conservatives, and many right-wing people saw Reform as the new Conservative Party; partly because it's full of rejects from the Conservative Party.

Speculation: he doesn't really want to be an MP, he wants to be a fascist grifter. He's annoyed by suggestions he do things like Be In His Constituency and Serve His Constituents.

He's recently been caught having accepted a VERY large amount of money from some unsavory people that he insists was a totally legitimate 'donation' and not breaking any rules.

Only it did break the rules and it's very clear that it did and things are in motion to hold him to account.

To avoid this, he has resigned as an MP, saying this is a protest at his treatment by the 'establisment' (he is a rich fascist grifter, but he likes to cosplay as a Man of the People). This has triggered a by-election, in which he is standing, with the hope that the people of his constituency will either elect him in a resounding win, indicating they don't care that he's corrupt (having not heard everything the investigation is uncovering), or someone from Labour or the Conservatives will win and he can swan off to America, free to grift again because of what the 'establishment' did to him.

Only, all the major political parties have agreed not to stand, stating openly that this is an obvious stunt and they won't legitimise it. So if he doesn't win, he can't say it was because he was too much of a rebel and the Establishment went against him, he'll just be a loser, which doesn't play too well with the right-wingers he wants to grift. And if he does get back in the investigation will go forward without any kind of 'mandate' from his constituency buoying him up.

But. There is another option.

COUNT BINFACE IS RUNNING.

Count Binface is part of the grand British tradition of joke candidates who stand as a protest option. They usually don't get enough votes to get their deposit back (which is supposed to deter unserious people) but they don't care, because DEMOCRACY.

Of course, Count Binface has never won, but it is hilarious to see a completely serious pathetic fascist concede defeat while standing next to a man with a bin on his head to whom they are democratically equal.

But if nobody else is standing. And if enough people in Clacton-on-Sea are finally cheesed off enough with Farage not doing anything for them, there is just a chance that one of the funniest things to ever happen in politics will happen.

Imagine. Imagine for just a moment that the Grotesque Fascist not only loses, but loses to Count Binface.

*guy who hasnt watched projekt funball or 90% of the post-canon content yet* and another thing i think is interesting re: liam's distinction of "bren and caleb" "nott and veth" is that with nott i think caleb was able to feel more fully caleb and with veth i think there is a part of him that is always going to be bren. the initial unit of caleb and nott was two people who felt so fully divorced from the structures of society - they were both unhoused, starving, escaped from jail, with no institutional or familial ties they would speak of. both of them felt they would never be able to return to the rest of society. they could move from town to town and be the only real person in the other's world. it's the kind of partnership that is divorced from the structures of family, from the worlds they came from, that doesn't feel fully discernable to either of them and never can be because to name it would be to accept that both of them have something they don't feel like they deserve

with veth, with her clear family ties to a husband and a son, this changes. against the clear structures of the nuclear family unit, that crucial ambiguity is gone. their inability to name what they had suddenly threatens to render it meaningless. veth struggles to conceive how she can exist in both worlds as once (even worrying that finally reinhabiting her body as veth will change her feelings for caleb!) and caleb tries to find a clear role for himself alongside her family unit to justify his existence there, in the process constantly relitigating the family he once destroyed. caleb will never marry essek, he will never have children of his own. caleb's only future relationship to the nuclear family structure is his love for veth, is his idolization of the family unit he feels he will never deserve again and his desire to play a real role in her life. and in the process he will always be remaking and relitigating bren. he remade bren once when he asked to teach luc magic, trying to be the benevolent mentor figure that he wished that trent had been. and he remade bren again in the very literal form of bren brenatto, who will always be a reminder of who he was, but perhaps more importantly, what that past resurfacing, his own desires and anguish and loneliness, would lead him to do to yet another person he loves
