So I was rereading Wings of fire, and arc one is very different from the rest.
It is well known that the first arc was more violent then the others, it had more dying dragons. Tui said this was because in the beginning, she imagined them fighting, since they were dragons, and she humanized them later on. However, the dragons also seem worse in the first arc.
Like, we find out in the Guide that the arena was originally a stage for art shows and beauty contests and stuff before Scarlet turned it into a battle arena. But in the first book, it seemed like the Skywings enjoyed the arena, they didn't want the dragonets to die there, and they didn't like Peril, but they did cheer for the arena, and some Mudwings and Sandwings showed up. Now Queen Scarlet was particularly violent, and no one liked the arena.
Also Peril mentions the champion's shield, where the queen's champion could fight for any prisoner, and if they win, the prisoner goes free, which does not sound like a law Queen Scarlet would make, especially since Scarlet didn't like Peril knowing about the law, but apparently it is now, because Scarlet invented the Arena.
It actually seems like they made Queen Scarlet worse in general, like, she was a bad queen, don't get me wrong, but the other Skywings were pretty violent as well, its not like anyone complained about the eggs being destroyed, and she seemed to follow the Skywing traditions about killing the firescales and whatnot. In winglet 5, Scarlet was said to offer no money to the wingery, so Jasper made all the toys himself, but this wasn't shown in the 8th book, they had plenty of toys. It feels like they are trying to make Scarlet more true to our leaders, but it is different then her original character. Also the wingery had a lot of fighting in book 8, with toy weapons and shields, but didn't seem to have any in Winglet 5, they just learned flying and painted rocks.
Queen Coral had the opposite route, where in the first arc, she is better then Scarlet, but still thought to be bad by Starflight, who says he's seen enough treasure in the Sky Kingdom and Kingdom of the sea to know that doesn't make you a good queen, so he doesn't think she is a good queen. She is also a lot worse in the first arc then in the second, she definingly doesn't like Tsunami as much for not being raised royal. In the ninth book, she seems way nicer.
Also, all the parents are bad, but in the first arc, and a bit of the second, it seemed like that was pretty normal. Like, it is stated that Cattail wasn't tryin to be mean, but she didn't care about Clay at all, so that seemed like the normal thing. But in the guide, Moccasin, the protagonist of the red egg story, cared about her egg, so Cattail is especially bad. Same for Winter's parents, he made it seem like this is what Icewing royalty was like, but Glacier was a good mom, so Winter's parents were just crazy.
