It took me quite some effort to get my hands on them, but here they are, 5 out of 8 books from the 'Just!' series by Andy Griffiths!

I used to love the cartoon series 'What's with Andy?!" so when I found out it was based on books I just had to get my hands on them, whatever the cost. Apparently though, it's pretty hard to get Australian books from your Europe-based chair, so they're not in the best shape because I had to get them second-hand. No biggie though, at least I've got them!

However, my hunt for the last three books ('Just Shocking!', 'Just MacBeth!' and 'Just Doomed!') continues...

So about the BBC Sherlock hints... Have we ever considered that we're dealing with Moffat and the BBC? The one that told us that Season 3 would contain a cliffhanger worse than Season 2, and that Season 4 would follow? The one that told us that Matt Smith had signed for a Season 8? I'm having serious trust issues with them, my bet is on their messing with our heads as usual. ;D

Ain't no sunblock like a prehistoric sunblock!

When I'm telling people about life as a hunter-gatherer in Mesolithic times, they always try to compare life now with life then - and what they are supposed to have missed. One of the things coming up with the heat these days is sunblock. When I tell them they definitely had sunblock, they always laugh.

Well here is your proof, guys.

Yesterday I had a colleague make this drawing on my back with ocher paint. Ocher is a kind of limestone found in France that, when ground and having water added, is a pretty cool kind of paint. We use it to paint on bodies, houses and other items. Ocher in powder form has been found in graves, so it probably had a special meaning to the people of that time. It can be found in two colors: Yellow, the characteristic shade of the stone, and a kind of rusty red, found in places where iron ore is also found. 

As you can see the pigment does completely block UV out.  I couldn't reach my back with my modern sunblock so it's a lovely shade of burnt pink now, except for the places where the ocher had been painted on my skin.

So, did the hunter-gatherers have sunblock? I can't tell if they knew about it, but it was definitely there! And I'll have this piece of evidence for at least the coming days. Yippee!

Did a bit of tinkering with Da yesterday, result: a big extension on Sherlock's cage :)

It used to be just the house-like thing, so that was pretty small for a male rat. Thus we merged it with a guinea pig cage so he'd have more room to run around <3
