If you want to see the current form of internalized misogyny that society is imposing the most on womyn at any given time, read fan fiction from that period. It isn't all of them, but you will learn a lot about the budding development of the girls and womyn of the times by how they portray a romantic fantasy entirely dictated by their anonymous hand. ESPECIALLY reader inserts.

And I say that as a partly retired self insert writer and reader. You would be able to tell what I was struggling with, what I hadn't experienced yet, what I was lacking, and what I viewed as romantic just from my writings between 3rd grade to 11th grade.

Funnily enough, fan fiction's greatest criticism is its greatest strength when it comes to studying the internalization patterns - and that is the lack of demand for quality. Common complaints about fics are walls of text, ooc (out of character) portrayals, "cringe" dialogue, songfics, etc.. But in a lot of situations, these are critiques serving as the meat of a compliment sandwich. And I find that in a lot of ways, fandom spaces historically practiced linguistic functionalism - which prioritizes accurate communication of ideas above the finer rules of grammar, syntax, and formatting.

Essentially - I would prefer that you wrote quotation marks and broke this into paragraphs. But ultimately, I came here for the story. Therefore, you delivered the narrative function, so the linguistic stumbles are forgiven.

And I think much of this has to do with the people in these groups. Up until recently, I feel comfortable saying that fan fiction (and in some regards, fandom culture) was one of the few spaces primarily created and dominated by "weird", overlooked, forgotten womyn and girls (hence why it is overlooked in the context of studying group cognitive patterns). It was also only really interested in catering to its members and the ever relevant concept of “don't like it, don't read it” kept a level of civility that permitted unfiltered desires, ideas, and commentaries via fics to flourish. Purist readers may not fuck with your stuff, but there was ALWAYS an audience for everyone. Always.

These spaces have always been a goldmine of anthropological and psychological study, overlooked because of the sex that dominates it and because academics would have to read about catboy Toji Fushiguro to get their data. I'm not as active in them anymore, so I can't speak about their present day state. But the original point remains, regardless of their current direction.Fandom and fan fiction culture: Imperfect, of course. OF COURSE. But, for a long time, unparalleled in authenticity.
