you know what? I'm reclaiming the word 'ugly' fuck you people
My brother randomly told me something that really made me think.
About what "Protect the youth" has become. Idk what it was like in other countries and I know that it very likely could have been stricter than it was in my country back then. But generally:
He was like "When I was 16, there were two kinds of adult content: Horror movies and explicitly depicted sexual content. The first made me have nightmares, the latter (as in what you could get in video rental stores) generally wasn't of much interest to me because it wasn't something I, as a 16 year old, could relate to. And other sexual content that was interesting (and/or helpful) WAS freely accessible. So whenever I saw an "18+" label somewhere, I just completely ignored that content because I knew it wouldn't be interesting at all to me.
But NOW, what's declared 18+ is even an excessive amount of swear words in streams! NOW, when I see an "18+" label, I don't know if it's horror movies that'll give some 16 year olds nightmares, if it's completely unrelatable porn, OR if it's educational sex ed, a 20 year old talking about their really healthy relationship with their partner (that includes intimacy), education about consent in BDSM (which affects 16 year olds as well, there's no age limit to curiosity), a live stream of wholesome musicians who happen to drink a couple of beers during kind of therapeutic talks, or simply people who aren't puritans and say "fuck" a lot! An 18+ label isn't worth anything anymore!"
And yeah... That's just it.
People who talk about body changes during their (first!) puberty are even labelled adult content. Even though puberty very much happens BEFORE adulthood. It's helpful content for minors. And it's labelled "adult" to "protect the youth".
Nothing means anything anymore.
ICE Is Expanding Across the US at Breakneck Speed. Here’s Where It’s Going Next
Federal records obtained by WIRED show that over the past several months, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) have carried out a secret campaign to expand ICE’s physical presence across the US. Documents show that more than 150 leases and office expansions have or would place new facilities in nearly every state, many of them in or just outside of the country’s largest metropolitan areas. In many cases, these facilities, which are to be used by street-level agents and ICE attorneys, are located near elementary schools, medical offices, places of worship, and other sensitive locations. The General Services Administration (GSA), which manages federal buildings and functions as the government’s internal IT department, is playing a critical role in this aggressive expansion. In numerous emails and memorandums viewed by WIRED, DHS asked GSA explicitly to disregard usual government lease procurement procedures and even hide lease listings due to “national security concerns” in an effort to support ICE’s immigration enforcement activities across the US. [...] By early November [2025], according to documents viewed by WIRED, 19 projects had been awarded in cities around the US, including Nashville, Tennessee; Dallas, Texas; Sacramento, California; and Tampa, Florida. Multiple projects were days away from being awarded in Miami, Florida; Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; and New Orleans, Louisiana, among others, and emergency requests for short-term space had been made in eight cities, including Atlanta, Georgia; Baltimore, Maryland; Boston, Massachusetts; and Newark, New Jersey. [...] A Trump administration official recently told WIRED that California and New York are “next” for the type of fraud investigation that culminated in 3,000 ICE agents in Minneapolis. At least seven leasing projects are underway in California. [...] In New York and New Jersey, ICE is expanding its physical footprint rapidly. The same pattern plays out in dozens of other cities across the US. ICE’s expansion includes not just its own preexisting space—or sharing an office with other government agencies—but also situates its agents near sensitive civilian locations. [...] Together, the leasing plans give a clear picture of where ICE is going next in the US: Everywhere.
hello all. there are a lot of words written below here, but i sincerely ask you take the time to read them anyways, especially those who have been affected in anyway by mental health struggles or suicide:
This week is the 6th year anniversary of the death of a cousin I was extremely close with whose name was Matthew.
Matthew lived in a very, very rural area in the USAmerican South, and had no access whatsoever to mental healthcare or support when he began experiencing suicidal ideation. Rural communities tend to have more conservative and 'old fashioned' feelings towards mental health, and that (often extreme) stigma leads to a feeling of extreme isolation and helplessness amongst struggling people in these areas. Most healthcare resources that are centered on mental wellbeing are only provided in urban areas, and the extreme poverty in a lot of rural communities mean that the few people who do have access to these resources often have to choose between food on the table or therapy.
Suicide rates in rural areas in the USA are significantly higher than urban ones-- not just because of the greater number of attempts, but also because when the closest hospital is 3 hours away, suicide attempts that might not have been lethal when quickly treated become far more likely to end in a fatality. Rural areas are also significantly more likely to allow easy access to firearms, and when firearms are used in an suicide attempt, medical intervention from a hospital 3 hours from your home is unlikely to do much help.
That is what happened to Matthew. At 19, he took advantage of that ease of access to firearms and took his life in his local grocery store's parking lot. While it was obvious from the moment he was found that there would be no saving him, his family still made the 3 hour drive to the hospital. His ma held what was left of him the entire time, and the hospital bill his parents were given just from the doctors declaring Matthew dead was enough to practically bankrupt his family.
Matthew chose not to leave a note.
This is a painfully common story in rural communities. With next to no resources, those who need help the most rarely get it, and most end up in a coffin surrounded by mourners who are terrified to say the word 'suicide'.
So what can I do? What can we do? For the next two weeks (February 17th through March 3rd) , in honor of Matthew, I will be matching donations (to the best of my ability) to the nonprofit Rural Minds.
Rural Minds™ is a nonprofit that aims to end the suffering, silence and stigma around mental illness in rural America. Our mission is to serv
Rural minds is a group focusing on destigmatizing mental health in rural areas, providing resources for those who are struggling and for their loved ones, as well as campaigning for local, state, and federal government grants to help fund mental health supports in rural areas. Matthew is gone. I will never see him again. Every year, February is agony for my family. But, together, we can help change the life of someone who might become another Matthew.
If you donate to Rural Minds and provide proof of your donation, I will match your donation (and provide proof of my own). I know 300$ is a lofty goal to hope for, but if we get even a little bit close, we will still be helping save lives.
I couldn't help Matthew. But we can help prevent others from feeling that his choice has to be theirs are well. So lets see if we can get to 300$!
(Ps: At rural mind's donation page, you are able to dedicate your donation to the memory of a loved one. If you feel so called, it would mean the world for you to dedicate yours to Matthew. And, if you're the praying sort, a quick prayer for him as well.)
Thank you for reading this far. May Matthew rest well, and may his memory bless us all.
0/300$
the distortion of "there is potential profit we did not earn" as "there is money we lost" is fascinating and disgusting to me. "megamediaconglomerate lost $1,000,000,000 to piracy this year" is a flat out lie. it is not true. they did not have a billion dollars, that they now do not have. they felt entitled to one billion dollars, that they did not have, and still do not have. it's an infuriating perversion of the truth
cant believe i lost $1000 when i told some guy at walmart to give it to me and he said no
Not be a nasty mean disgusting aromantic on main but I hate the prevalence of puritanical anti-sex culture in queer spaces. Stop demonising casual sex or fucking your friends or in general just getting it on with whoever you want without wanting to pursue a romantic relationship as well. Stop calling people who don’t want romantic relationships but like sex ‘fuckbois’ or ‘afraid of commitment’. Stop treating all aromantic people like they’re not valid unless they’re also asexual. Aroallo people exist and deserve just as much respect as the rest of the community regardless of their views on sex. This involves cishet aroallo people as well because I know how weird yall on tumblr are about them. You don’t get to judge someone just because they don’t match up to your image of what a respectable queer looks like. Unless you’ve forgotten we’re all perverted dykes and faggots and trannies in the oppressors eyes and helping keep the myth of sex being something disgusting that should only ever happen between “two people who love each other very much” just helps them. Stop fucking putting your own head under the guillotine before the extermination has even started
*note: do not tag this as ace or aroace. This post is about the specific experiences aroallo people face and I will not suffer derailing.
Was wondering why there was a sudden rise in Reblogs for this post before remembering it was valentines. Fellow aro soldiers hold the line strong now I believe in you 🫡🫡🫡
YES, YOU CAN DO SOMETHING ABOUT DISCORD'S AGE VERIFICATION
But while cancelling Nitro and boycotting Discord CAN be a form of protest, it sadly may not be effective. Why? Bc their hands are tied due to the recent trend in age verification bills worldwide.
All of the bad internet bills. One website.
This site helps send emails to your lawmakers to oppose certain Internet bills in the US, many of which would push age verification if passed HOWEVER, calling your lawmakers on the phone is most effective. If you're not in the US, you can still help by spreading the word. The only way to prevent age verification (On Discord and ALL other social media platforms) is to prevent the bills that are forcing it. Look at the site for more info
Come on freaks let’s move
While there have been age verification laws put in place in other countries, in the US there are currently such laws in only three states, and I believe one is not in fact while there are appeals and lawsuits going on.
Discord is obeying in advance, which is the worst thing to do when dealing with encroaching authoritarianism.
And yes, age verification laws are a form of authoritarianism, using the power of government to quash free expression under a pretext, in this case the pretext of protecting children.
They have already started walking back the impact of their new rule and how it will be implemented, and that is a direct response to how many people have let them know that it's not OK. You have to keep doing that in addition to talking to your lawmakers about why age verification schemes are inherently dangerous without actually providing the claimed benefit, and that if children need to be protected from online content, that's the job of parents.
it/its and neopronoun users should be allowed to destroy people with mind powers
I wish people would stop using "empathy" to mean "common decency" and "caring about others."
Empathy is:
The ability to feel others' emotions with them, either inherently (affective empathy) or by intentionally thinking about how you would feel in their situation (cognitive empathy)
Empathy is not:
Common decency (that's common decency)
Caring about others (that's compassion)
A prerequisite for being a good person
Stop putting empathy on a pedestal and demonizing people who lack empathy.
EMPATHY IS MORALLY NEUTRAL.

Stop using the word degenerate to mean horny challenge
When you say "degenerate art" do you know what you're fucking invoking
Some random guy in the "degenerate art exhibition" in Germany in 1937 idk it's probably not important
Yeag
I’m really glad to see people are actually discovering who Max Nordau was now. You can read a copy of Degeneration online here https://www.gutenberg.org/cache/epub/51161/pg51161-images.html
It is a horrific book which is responsible for so much bloodshed and misery but just know that every time you use the term ‘degenerate’ or ‘degeneracy’ to refer to a person or thing you don’t like you’re continuing the legacy of Max Nordau and engaging in fascist rhetoric. It is a word which has no place in the modern lexicon especially as a joke
Degeneration
I can't do much but maybe this will interest someone. This cookbook is by a classically trained autistic chef, made for people with sensory issues. It's sold 1/6th of its initial run because apparently no one wants to have an autistic person interviewed on TV.
Apparently it's also very funny.
An accessible family cookbook that offers solutions rather than tricks to empower the food-averse, autistic, and picky eater, with 46 recipe
Spread this around! I bet someone here can use this.
More info from the link:
"An accessible family cookbook that offers solutions rather than tricks to empower the food-averse, autistic, and picky eater, with 46 recipes. This much-needed cookbook combines tips and techniques with a dash of understanding about food aversion and how to help your kids—and yourself—cook beautiful meals in an empowering way, and is a groundbreaking resource for anyone who has ever been called “picky” or “discerning.” Learn how to alter the texture or taste profile of a dish, or even fit it within a specific palette with a unique color-coded guide. Delicious, nutritious, and easily tailored recipes (including for gluten-free and vegan eaters) include:
the perfect smashed cheeseburger
Italian sausage and potato soup
the best omelet
stuffed focaccia
chocolate pinwheels
and dozens more
Professional chef Matthew Broberg-Moffitt’s advice is broken down by category (The Five Tastes, Texture, Color, Aroma, Presentation, and Plating) in order to address each and every aspect of food aversion, and a Food Preference Profile and Worksheet is included for you and your child to quickly identify and summarize their preferences. Instead of leading to mistrust by disguising or slipping in foods your kids don’t want to eat, this cookbook supports caretakers in a way that maintains a healthy relationship with food, and a joyful, less stressful experience around the table."
I have this, and I recommend! I've only tried a few recipes so far (because I samefood a lot), but they've been a) very good and b) to the extent there are elements that don't work for me, they are very (intentionally) easy to adapt. The only drawback I would warn about is that (in my opinion) he assumes the reader/cook has access to a much larger variety of cooking equipment that a lot of people will have. I haven't had any trouble adapting his instructions to the equipment that is actually in my kitchen, but I could see this tripping up someone who is brand new to cooking.
(Also this book has permanently changed the way I make mashed potatoes. He recommends baking them instead of boiling, and they are incredible.)
My only worry is… what if the author’s safe textures are not the same as my safe textures?
@gracechoreography It's not that kind of cookbook! :) It's designed to help you work with *your* specific needs.
A large chunk of the beginning is entire chapters dedicated to the different senses, and how to cook with your sensory preferences/needs in mind. For example, here is the beginning of the texture chapter:
And then here's an example of how it talks about recipes:
The book is aimed at people who don't have a lot of experience cooking and/or are trying to figure out how to cook for someone with food aversions (like their kid) without prior tools or experience, so it won't blow your mind if you're already been successfully cooking for your food-averse self for well over a decade. But there was a still useful tips in it for me, and also it's just...nice?... to have a cookbook that thinks about food the same way I do.
For context: Ukrainians took to the streets in 2013 to oust pro-Russian president Viktor Yanukovych and restore 2004 amendments to their constitution that weakened presidential power over their parliament. They blocked up the streets of Kyiv with tires (as well as bricks and anything else they could get their hands on), building barriers that prevented the military from removing protestors.

At the end of the day you have to understand some people are mentally ill like really really mentally ill on a level you can’t understand. I see this a lot when someone does something weird or incomprehensible and people are shocked trying to figure out their intentions and why they’d do it and it’s like there’s people who are psychotic or delusional or have rapid mood swings you’ll never be able to comprehend and very often people with other mental illnesses who are able to function more acceptably have a bad lack of understanding of that and compare what they can do and act like as the standard not understanding that’s not the same playing field
People facing addiction, eating disorders, abuse, etc as well will do things you’ll never understand. Getting in the habit of not judging or at the very least not making the lives people who aren’t harming you worse, is actually, a pretty good thing to do
