RWBY is so frustratingly poorly executed. There were so many interesting things brought up but also so many things they just completed failed on.
Like the music? Fucking slaps. Volumes 1-3 have my favorite songs but the rest of series doesn’t dissappoint. The running motifs? The characterization? Frequent allusions to fairytales? Immaculate.
The actual show writing? Yang carried more about her new girlfriend than her little sister when her sister allegorically commited suicide right in front of Yang. The sister Yang is supposedly characterized as “overprotective of.” And this was from a volume with some of the better writing.
The fact the characters are loosly based on irl fairytales and the in universe fairytales are important to the plot? Great concept (when the writers remember about it).
The weapons? Ridiculous but so fun. Go ahead and have a trumpet that’s also a gun. That giant scythe? Yeah it can transform into a sniper rifle. Why not?
The Grimm? Not well explained (even in World of Remnant, the bonus mini series that exists solely to explain lore stuff). But what we do know? They’re attracted to negative emotions (which maybe helps Grimm spawn, unclear and contradictory in the source material), Grimm get smarter with age (kinda ignored beyond its introduction in V2), and just the sheer diversity of types.
The Apathy is probably my favorite type of Grimm because they slowly give the people around them depression until the affected people don’t bother to wake up. The insidious nature and hidden danger of the Apathy is fascinating. The Brunswick Farms arc in V6 is probably my favorite story moment from V4-V7.
All this to say, RWBY fascinates me yet infuriates me. There are moments of shocking brilliance and then the rest is all mundanity that makes me want so much more. I hate this show and yet I love it. I want so much better for it but I also just want it to end (like wtf was the point of the 2 dc crossover movies)
