things that 15 year old me did sophomore year that my southern-bred god-fearing conservative christian teachers Did Not Like
teacher refused to let me sit backwards in chairs. i made a point to sit backwards in chairs until she told me to stop, and then id manspread as much as possible. (semester one.)
teacher got onto my friend and gave her a panic attack over her newly dyed hair. i told her my friend putting red streaks in her hair was no different than her removing the grey streaks from her hair. got sent outside. (semester one)
teacher told me my bra strap was showing. took my bra off in class and put it in bag. was sent to principal’s office. mother was called, although she only muffled her laughter over the telephone. (semester two)
[to homophobic teacher who disliked my mothers] “what language is gaelic from? gayland?” “that’s where my moms are from, ma’am.”
teacher claimed i was lying about moving to uruguay and tried to force me into sitting in a personal meeting about my future classes and goals. told her to “sign me the fuck up for underwater basket weaving” and got sent outside. (semester two)
was told by teacher that “ladies should not say they have to pee. try ‘can i use the restroom’ instead” replied with “alright. i gotta piss like a racehorse. can i use the restroom?“ (got sent outside. again. semester two)
was told to “smile, you’ll look nicer” by a 6′0″ male coach i did not know. when he blocked my entrance out of the classroom until i smiled for him, i said “shove it straight up your ass,” before elbowing him in the ribcage, ducking under his arm, and running for it. skipped class in that building for a week. (semester two)
hopped a fence to catch my bus and flipped off an ancient male history teacher when he shouted at me to come back. he threatened to find me again. he never found me.
An inspiration.
You cannot say I left, if you were never there in the first place

THIS IS SO WONDERFUL AND AMAZING I’M TT-TT
Tick season is already in full swing and it’s going to be one of the worst years for ticks and lyme disease. Make sure your pets are on flea/tick/heartworm prevention and get your dogs vaccinated against lyme!
The sun is shining and the grass is green in minnesota today, what a lovely beginning to the impending TICKPOCALYPSE
Remember to cover yourselves appropriately if you’re going places with lots of wildlife! Ticks are dangerous for people as well as pets!
I’ve always heard to avoid long pants because ticks are easier to notice and remove when they try to climb a bare leg, but I think it’s a matter of preference tbh.
What you really need is to use a good repellant made for use in tick heavy areas. I’m not talking citronella essential oils, I mean a real repellant like Deep woods OFF that uses DDT. Spray it on your shoes and inside your shoes. You would be surprised how many ticks start in your socks and work their way up. I have had waaaaaay fewer guests on me after spraying my shoes as well as my legs.
If you want to get REALLY serious you can treat your hiking gear in permethrin, or get permethrin treated exercise gear. It’s a very potent, effective substance that kills ticks and other parasites on contact. It’s present in some flea and tick treatments for dogs. But the kicker is, permethrin is also VERY toxic to cats, so if you have a cat and you feel like you need permethrin treated gear, you MUST keep the gear where kitty can’t get it.
Friendly reminder to stock up on tick meds for your pets, and repellent for yourself! This year is going to be a BAD one.
ALWAYS check yourself after a hike, or any trip outside. Wear bright clothes so it’s easier to see ticks on you, and make sure to do a full-body check when you’re done. This includes checking your hair line and under waistbands or underwear (last tick I found on me was on my butt, and I had been hiking with pants and a long shirt on…trust me, check under your underwear).
Remove ticks as soon as you find them, and keep them in a small container or bag (heads completely squished) for identification purposes just in case your bite looks iffy later on. Clean the bite site thoroughly. Be on the look out for any flu-like symptoms, rashes, or red rings around the bite site like a bulls-eye (note: a slight red ring right afterward is normal, see below for what “bad” looks like). Usually if you get a tick off in the first 24 hours you’ll be ok, so long as you didn’t agitate the tick, but if you notice anything abnormal go to the doctor ASAP. If your tick was engorged when removed, be especially on the lookout. It’s always better to be safe than sorry when it comes to the nasty diseases ticks can carry.
Remember: if you’re buying tick preventatives for your pets, make sure you get one that’s meant for them. Don’t use dog-specific medicine on cats, or vice-versa, and make sure you get the correct weight range for your pet. Failure to do so can lead to serious complications for your pets. If you’re not sure what you should use or what’s safe for pets, contact your local veterinarian and ask. If your pet is bitten by a tick and displays any abnormal behaviors or symptoms of sickness get them to your vet as soon as you can and bring the tick with you.
This has been your tick safety reminder post for the season.
Reblogging for both human tick safety and the note that permethrin is really deadly to cats.
And this is why we do theatre. Thank you Jen, for sharing this story. And thank you Doug Storm for making it a story worth telling.

Is anyone else talking about how problematic the new M. Night Shyamalan movie “Split” is? Because it is basically demonizing people with schizophrenia and people living with DID. It’s making me really fired up tbh.

He is so DELIGHTED
“They want to hire a part of me.”
Everything about this, from Carrie’s viscerally presented and excellent point, to the pun, to the look on Stephen’s face like he just fell in love. Everything is so, so good.
Opinion Time
Yes, 2016 was a shit year in many ways, but I’m so goddamn sick of this pity party, considering by almost every conceivable metric, earth and humanity are doing better than ever.
Since day goddamn one of this year people have been whining and complaining, and for many, flat out refusing to acknowledge any appreciable upside to this year. How could you expect it to be a good year if you all wanted it to be a bad year? Between the excessive self-destructive humor, borderline loss of self worth I’ve seen a lot of people subject themselves to, apathy felt world wide, and more that I shouldn’t even have to state (you all know the kind of shift I’m talking about), there’s simply no way we could make it a good year considering it’s fairly clear we either didn’t want this year to be a good one, or didn’t try hard enough to make it a good one.
So, allow me to tell you some easily overlooked reasons 2016 was actually a goddamn killer year:
American-Centric Stuff
Harriet Tubman was decided to replace Andrew Jackson on the $20
The Americas became totally measles-free
Unemployment finally hit a pre-recession low
Cubs won the world series
High school graduation rates are at record highs
US-Mexican collaboration over the Colorado River has been successful
Crime rates are extraordinarily low
Shut up about the election and realize we are doing VERY WELL
Worldwide - Politics
US-Cuban relationships are being improved
ISIS has been steadily collapsing
The most peaceful era in recent history is still ongoing
Being transgender is overall more widely accepted than ever
The worldwide trend of democratization is ongoing
Worldwide, crime is steadily dropping if not plummeting
No matter what you think of recent political news, the average trend is doing better than ever, and individuals are, in many cases, becoming more free to be themselves
Worldwide - Health
Worldwide poverty is decreasing
World hunger is at a record low in recent memory
Major diseases worldwide are on a decline
Childbirth-related deaths are extremely down
Life expectancy in Africa has skyrocketed since 2000
West Africa is clear of Ebola
Education and literacy are spreading at incredible rates
The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge (2014) and its revivals (2015, 2016) have raised literal millions of dollars for ALS research
On average, life is getting and will keep getting better for the average person
Worldwide - Science and Nature
Green energy is more affordable and popular than ever
Many endangered species have been elevated from that status
Sea World has agreed to stop breeding captive killer whales
Several nations have committed to regions of sustainability and anti-deforestation in the forms of reserves, parks, and more
SpaceX, my dude, hear about that?
A plane circumnavigated the world with no fuel
The world is more advanced in more parts than ever, and we are making massive strides in almost every area
(Sources: 1 2 3 4 5)
So, sure. 2016 wasn’t perfect, but what year has been, ever? 2016 has been a year of remarkable progress, freedom, and awareness. You don’t need to like the year for the countless celebrity deaths, or certain political developments, but from at least a remotely objective perspective, we are doing better than ever. Seriously.
So, I challenge you all to do one more thing for me. Think of your past year, and write something, either as a response or in the tags or send it to my askbox here, and share a few good things about your year. Anything, no matter how insignificant it might seem. I’ll go first.
I got a job and started saving money. I started exercising regularly, and picked a few hobbies I could really get into. I taught myself to play guitar, and still am. I became more politically aware. I made a lot of new friends. I overcame an illness that took me out of school for a month and a half.
Now you share.
This is what I’m trying to tell people. Even in the darkest of times, even if you personally had the worst year of your life...there is still good. Hell, there were still good times in your life. Just because bad things are happening does NOT mean life is bad.
After six and a half years I graduated college, got an immediate job offer, and got to spend my last semester living with my best friend.
There is good. Sometimes you just have to look harder to find it.
Weirdly anti-millennial articles have scraped the bottom of the barrel so hard that they are now two feet down into the topsoil

1 cup Washing Soda (not Baking Soda. Different things.)
1 cup Borax (not Boric Acid. Also a different thing.)
½ cup - 1 cup grated bar soap (you can use literally anything. I often use Ivory because it’s easy to get and I find it works well, a lot of people like Fels-Naptha, which is an actual laundry bar. Some people use Dr. Bronner’s. Really does not fucking matter.) After grating your soap, combine all ingredients. That’s it. That’s the whole thing. Use maybe a ¼ cup per load.
^^^ I’ve done this for years now and it works as well as any store bought detergent
WHAT Thank you, tumblr user awfullydull! Your URL does no justice to the good advice you give!
we’ve been making our own detergent bc no money and there are like ten people living in my home so it’s an unnecessary expense
my clothes smell nicer than they ever have with store bought stuff
omfg i actually saw fabric softener rebranded as ‘fabric conditioner’ in an advert last night. i laughed so hard because i am p sure this is why. i haven’t used it in years.
but dryer sheets… if you live in an area that is v dry in the winter, like parts of the midwest (or as i’m finding in utah) they’re very good to have. you do in fact get enough static to need them. i could probably get away without in hawai’i, but not on the mainland in drier states.
Here in Michigan I use dryer sheets in the winter only, because otherwise half my laundry load sticks together and doesn’t dry appropriately, and then I shock everything and everyone forever which is terrible.
tbh I use fabric softener because that’s how I was raised to do my washing (and cause I need it in my drier environment) but these bullshit articles piss me off so much.
Fabric softener is terrible for front-loading washers because it gets stuck in the rubber belts that create an air-tight seal, and cause mold.
So you have to wipe down the rubber belts with antibacterial cleaner/solution at least once a week to prevent the build up of mold.

If you search on Pinterest there are recipes for diy dryer sheet ball things that you can reuse, thus saving money on buying dryer sheets :D

The ongoing saga of Harker and the stapler
My ball python, Harker, is really scared of this one stapler.
Every time he sees it, he balls up.
I was grading today and sure enough, the stapler was still scary.
However, for the first time, I introduced a second stapler!
He was nervous at first…
But it didn’t take him long to warm up to it.
Pretty soon it became his best friend!
There was nothing the new stapler couldn’t do!
Including protecting him from the other stapler.
The moral of the story?
My snake is a weirdo.
Update: Today I took Harker to my office, where he met another stapler.
He was fairly apathetic at first, but eventually they got on pretty well!
This stapler was smaller than either of the others, but one thing was sure: this stapler was definitely not scary!
Am I any closer to understanding my snake’s strange relationship with staplers?
Absolutely not.
UPDATE: it’s 2016 and I’m pleased to announce that he’s FINALLY gotten over his fear of the stapler!
He likes it now!
Tell him I’m proud of him
This post is so pure!
