I saw someone point out the other day that in Get Back when John leaves but before he calls, you can literally see Paul shaking in his chair. And then they paired the video with the him shaking in his bed quote. That thought wasn't left me alone for like a WEEK

That’s another great catch. It’s for sure a physical manifestation of his extreme anxiety and fear of losing what’s precious to him, which plays out in that scene in Get Back when he’s worried that John might not show up at work and the implications of that. If I remember correctly, at some point Linda notices his body language becoming more and more anxious and agitated and reaches over to grab his hand, which seems to snap him out of his dark hole for a second.

He admitted an interview at some point that up until this time period he was cocky because he believed in his and John’s ability to do anything together successfully. That everything would work out how he expected because that had been his reality with The Beatles for years. But the split was such a blow to his confidence and self-worth, which is an interesting admission from a person who is relentlessly optimistic. I can see how sudden self-doubt and impending loss of a close relationship can create the conditions for “you got me on the run | My body’s shaking.” 🥺

Something about how Paul has to put a positive spin on things, because his family who lived through the war were always laughing and joking. Something about how his traumatic experiences don’t count, because he was lucky, because he's famous, because he had a “good home life” ... because because because. His suffering was never “real” and he should be stronger, etc., which means he never actually lets himself feel it without guilt for not being “stronger.” I guess I’m thinking about and Momma Gets By and bodhbdearg's Paul in therapy fic today.

He's in his 80s, he's lived a life few can imagine, with good and bad things, but somehow it's like his own pain isn't "real," his own trauma isn't "enough." Because he has money, and fame, and has had so many people he loved in his life. But trauma and adverse childhood experiences and PTSD and grief and loss....they aren't a competition. If it affected him, it affected him.

Maybe his wonderful extended family that lived through the war were all "fine" but that doesn't mean they were really all fine, and that doesn't mean he had to be "fine" just because his experiences were different than theirs.
