I NEED to write fanfiction <- guy who is not writing fanfiction

Hi,

My name is Meg and I am (hopefully, pending exam results next week) a final year medical student and pharmacy technician. Now that my life no longer revolves around the MLA (UK medical licensing exam), I would like to offer my services as a free and mostly non judging medical consultant for the good authors of tumblr, out of the selfish desire to read less medical inaccuracies in fic. No question is too weird and there are no follow ups too many, I would genuinely willingly research for four hours for a complete stranger purely for the love of the game. Writing tips:

“You feel the bulge in his pants” - implies that you are feeling some guy’s penis, may be sexy depending on context

“You feel the bugle in his pants” - implies that this guy has a military horn in his pants, invites confusing questions like why does he have that and how big are his pockets

How do you PRIMARILY find fanfiction to read?

I know the people who write them and get a front row seat

I go check the tag on ao3 frequently

I follow the tag on tumblr to find them

fic recs from posts on tumblr that come across my dash/ follow writers

I find fics from posts on other social media like bluesky, instagram, etc

I find fics from posts on short form video sites like tiktok, instagram reels, e

i am in a discord where people share fic recs/fic promos

i am in one of those tumblr communities and find fic recs there

someone i know sends me fic links

i only read fics brought to me by carrier pigeon

it's all good/ no consistent way/ i really don't know/ i don't read enough fic

there is a secret other way and i will elaborate

If you're ever worried about whether your writing is too self indulgent, I just want you to remember that Sharknado had 5 sequels. I'm only partway through watching Sharknado 6: It's About Time, but already they've traveled through time and ridden a pteronadon into a Sharknado so they could use the magic teleportation portal inside of it to travel forward in time to King Arthur's time, where they are currently battling a Sharknado full of fire-breathing dragon sharks with Excalibur, which is a chainsaw sword that calls lightning. You're fine. In fact, be a little more self indulgent if anything.

Apparently a lot of people get dialogue punctuation wrong despite having an otherwise solid grasp of grammar, possibly because they’re used to writing essays rather than prose. I don’t wanna be the asshole who complains about writing errors and then doesn’t offer to help, so here are the basics summarized as simply as I could manage on my phone (“dialogue tag” just refers to phrases like “he said,” “she whispered,” “they asked”):

“For most dialogue, use a comma after the sentence and don’t capitalize the next word after the quotation mark,” she said.

“But what if you’re using a question mark rather than a period?” they asked.

“When using a dialogue tag, you never capitalize the word after the quotation mark unless it’s a proper noun!” she snapped.

“When breaking up a single sentence with a dialogue tag,” she said, “use commas.”

“This is a single sentence,” she said. “Now, this is a second stand-alone sentence, so there’s no comma after ‘she said.’”

“There’s no dialogue tag after this sentence, so end it with a period rather than a comma.” She frowned, suddenly concerned that the entire post was as unasked for as it was sanctimonious.
