Common headcanons for Sirius I don’t agree with

I saw another post with one of those passing on my dashboard today and as I tend to disagree with many headcanons that are written for Sirius, I thought I would share my point of view of that character, and more specifically, the hc I often see and I don’t agree with at all :

- Sirius loving his ‘perfect hair’ and his ‘stormy eyes’

Sirius hates his appearance. He looks like his father : same forme of face, same eyes, same hair… when he looks in a mirror he sees the ghost of his father and the rest of his bloodline reminding him who he should be, and he hates it. That’s why he lets his hair grow, to hide the obvious resemblance. Same for a beard when he is old enough to have one. Every detail that can differenciate him from his family is welcomed.

- Sirius being a ‘drama-queen’

This boy was raised in a home were he was abused, at least psychologically (and I have always considered that he had been mistreated in a physical way as well). The key for survival then is to hide his weaknesses, hide what hurts so that it won’t be used against you. No, he doesn’t panic for nothing, no, he is not overdramatic when something serious happens (if he is overdramatic, it is only to make his friends laugh). He will never talk about what troubles him, and hide it when something hurts him, and that destroys him from the inside, as it means that he needs to carry the weight of the world on his shoulders, and his shoulders alone.

He hides everything under jokes, and pranks and crooked smiles, but inside, he’s a mess.

And no, he doesn’t spend his time complaining when he is sick, nor cries when he gets a scratch. He hides it again, and only the people closest to him can hear him complaining when he is in pain. The rest of the world sees a blank mask or a smirk instead.

- Sirius flirting with the girl he loves

If he is in love, he won’t tell anyone, especially the woman who has his heart. The people who were supposed to love him did nothing but hurt him, he has no idea how to deal with ‘love’. He has never known the feeling. So he panicks,and hides his true feelings, and if he really cares about this girl, he will make sure that she doesn’t learn the nature of his feelings for her. He feels like he doesn’t deserve her.

-Sirius being overconfident

He’s terrified by himself. He is a tortured, broken boy who is terrifed by the idea that he could end up like the family he rejected. He is terrified by himself, and above all, he is afraid that what he had to go through as a child could destroy him and turn him into something as poisoned and dark as his parents.

-Sirius looking for being popular

To protect himself from his abusive parents and their remarks, he had to create himself an armour, an armour that makes him reject the opinions others might have of him, which turns him into the ‘rebellious one’. To ignore the way his parents think of him, he shuts down the opinions of the entire world.

- Marlene being bitchy, even mean to him.

A blackinnon specifity here, but I don’t see how Sirius could fall in love with someone who could be cruel to him. Yes, I do imagine Marlene sassy and witty and next to Sirius, it forms battles of sarcasm and clever words. But it’s not cruel. She doesn’t insult him all the time. Again, Sirius has spent a terrible childhood during which he was hurt by the people who were supposed to protect him and love him. He would never fall in love with someone cruel, he would fall in love with someone able to make him laugh, and entertain him, but most importantly, with someone who would show him the affection, the kindness, and the care he had lacked as a child. Not a cruel woman, a loving one.

I don’t see Sirius as a stupid teens, nor someone superficial, nor someone who even cares about his appearance or what others may think of him. And I don’t think he could fall in love with someone who would be mean to him. To me, Sirius is a complex and tortured character who holds too much suffering but knows how to hide it well, and instead of letting himself drown in this pain, he bravely faces it, fights it, struggles until his head finally pierces the surface of this ocean of pain, until he frees himself from a part of his past to be himself.

Peaches and Pick-up Lines, a.k.a. Beautiful & Terrifying

The morning began like many other summer Saturday mornings, with Lily and Remus meeting at their favorite coffee shop at eight before heading to the farmer’s market for fresh veggies and people watching. This particular Saturday, Remus was complaining to Lily about the size of the strawberries in one particular stall (“You can’t tell me these aren’t genetically modified, look at them!”) when he felt a gentle tug on his trousers, near his knee. He looked down and found a tiny toddler with thick black hair gripping the denim leg of his jeans in one hand and pointing at a display of peaches with the other.

“My apples, Papa?” he asked hopefully. “Mine?”

“Those are peaches,” Remus corrected gently, reflexively, just before he panicked.

“Fucking hell!” He hopped backwards, breaking the child’s grip on his jeans. “Lily!”

“Sirius, where’s Harry?”

James asked the question with the kind of practiced calm he often used when seeking information from his six- and seven-year-old students. It was a gentle voice, one that inspired confidence and encouraged honesty instead of whining and fibs and finger-pointing. Only one who knew him very well would be able to tell James was about four seconds away from screaming bloody murder.

Sirius knew James very well. “You were holding him last,” he said, his tone accusatory only because he, too, was on the verge of panic. “You had him on your shoulders, and then you put him down to hide from Marlene—”

“I wasn’t hiding, I had to tie my shoe!”

He had been hiding, but that was irrelevant. Marlene was well-meaning, but she’d been trying to play matchmaker ever since Harry’s mother had up and moved to New York to chase her Broadway dreams, James and Harry be damned. That was six months ago, and, honestly, James didn’t want to be matched with anyone right now. He just wanted to teach his primary schoolers and play football on weekends and let his parents and Sirius spoil his precious son absolutely rotten.

His son. His son who was missing.

James’ attention snapped back to the present. And that’s when the screaming began. “HARRY!”

As a younger sister who knows this struggle all too well: THIS IS REAL. Pretty sure 70% of my past teachers still think I’m called what my sister is called in fact.

Imagine Fred being called Percy by McGonagall accidentally and then he gets so offended that he refers to her by “Professor [insert any other name but McGonagall” for the rest of the year, costing Gryffindor a considerable amount of points one at a time.

From then on, she vows to just call them all Mr Weasley.

Until Ginny comes along and she calls her Mr Weasley by accident and Ginny “accidentally’ calls her Sir and it starts again.

It’s lightly off-topic but also slightly relevant but I have long cherished this mental image of Professor Snape saying something snappish to Harry in just the wrong tone of voice and Harry absentmindedly, wearily, and completely accidentally responding with, “Yes, Aunt Petunia.”

Okay, okay, okay, this is probably deeply off-track, but all I can think of is Harry––who upon learning that Snape, of all people, his pain in the neck potions professor knows his aunt––has now received what can only be called a psychic punch to balls. 

How, how, how, is a teenage boy supposed to rectify this, mentally? Connect these strange unjoined worlds to somehow explain that Snape––Snape!––knows his Aunt Petunia?

“It doesn’t make any sense, mate,” Harry tells Ron, blearily, desperately wishing at age thirteen years that his butter beer was a real beer. “It just––it can’t be. Why would he know Aunt Petunia?” Ron grimaces. “Why would he want to? I mean, I know he’s Snape, and all that, but––”

Harry writes his only letter back to #4 Privet Drive, dotted with tears, and it has one line: How do you know Severus Snape?

Petunia writes back: DO NOT MENTION THAT MAN EVER AGAIN. 

And this. This. Sparks a light in Harry’s head. This is the same way Petunia talks about celebrities who have deeply, personally offended her. Usually when she fancied them and then they got married. It’s so completely clear to him, now: Snape is deeply, irrevocably, utterly in love with Aunt Petunia.

This is flipping hilarious and I love it. My dad used to call one of us the wrong name, then he would tack on “Fred, George, Harry...” since he had already messed up who were were (and mind you this is BEFORE Harry Potter even came out). So then we got a dog and we named him Fred because that’s what he would say next in the line of names....the he would run through the list of kids and then the dog’s name 😂🤷🏼‍♀️

i’ve been in the fandom for a long time - 4 years long - and when i first got here, reblogs were way more of a thing than they are now. I wish I could pull up receipts of really old posts that I’ve seen (gifs and graphics and fics alike) that got so many more reblogs than likes. for some reason or another, things have shifted. when i tried to start putting out my writing 2 years ago i thought that everyone just hated my writing and was giving me “pity likes” because i got like, 12 reblogs on a fic out of 200 notes.

obviously we’re putting out this content for free, people are consuming it for free - there’s no obligation on bloggers to signal boost or reblog or whatever. but it is encouraging, and nice. and if you like the content - consider reblogging it. it’ll encourage the creator who made the content you enjoy, which will probably motivate the creator to make more of the content you like - a happy cycle  :)

Okay but to expound on my deaf!Harry post…

- Dumbledore contacts Lupin before Harry attends Hogwarts and has him learn sign language and hires him as an interpreter for Harry during classes

- Snape: “are you listening to me potter?”

Harry, speaking to the best of his ability: “to be fair I can’t listen to anyone, however I was, in fact, paying attention”

-Hermione tirelessly helping Harry with speech and pronunciation so he can get spells right

-Ron aggressively trying to learn sign language to communicate with Harry and he’s so embarrassed he can’t get the hang of it at first but Harry thinks it’s the nicest thing anyone has ever done for him because what are friends??

-Draco, mouthing: “I hate you”

Harry, misreading hate as date: “If you wanted a date you should have said something sooner.”

-Harry signing rude things at Umbridge.

Umbridge: “What did he say!?”

Lupin: “he said you’re charming.”

-The entire Weasley family learning basic sign language for whenever Harry is with them, making him feel more at home since the Dursley’s never made a decent effort with it.

- McGonagall aware of Harry’s condition from observation at the Dursley’s prepared and learned sign language and signs when she can during her class, allowing Lupin the occasional break.

McGonagall: “You’re not sneaky Mr. Weasley; I very well know what you just signed.”

- Voldemort monologuing in sign language

Harry: “I’m sorry I don’t understand, I’m blind.”

Voldemort: “??????”

I think about James Potter a lot.

I 100% agree with the “Mom Friend” trope, I think it’s really cute and it fits because James is such a caring person, and he’s strong and considerate and brave and maybe he is a bored kid and wants a challenge, and befriending who he chooses to befriend is definitely a challenge.

But I also think that investing so much of your time, and thoughts, and help into someone (or more than one person) can be exhausting. It’s draining to put the thoughts, and beliefs, and outbursts of two (not one. Two! Or three, even, if you consider Peter) people in front of your own. And maybe James grows up thinking that he doesn’t deserve to be upset, or angry, or scared, because he has such a perfect life compared to that of his best friends. He grows up repressing his own emotion, because it’s more important that he pulls Sirius out of bed every day, or that he supports Remus when Remus is too exhausted to do so. He feels that writing the Charms essay Sirius completely disregarded is more important than writing his own, because Sirius needs it more than he does. He feels that meticulously studying becoming an Animagus for Remus is more important than studying for his own classes, because Remus needs it. 

So his grades slip. He’s tired all the time, but more often than not he has to smile and laugh with Sirius or Remus to take their minds off things. His mother falls ill in fourth year, but he doesn’t tell anyone and can’t even cry to himself in bed because Sirius has taken to burrowing in beside him. He just holds his aching eyes open and plasters on a smile and keeps pulling pranks to keep Sirius from really hurting anybody and keeps waking Remus up to come alongside them so that he doesn’t think about the Full Moon in three days. 

Maybe it’s the breaking point for him just before Christmas break in fifth year. He wants to go home, needs to see his mother because he’s worried that the inevitable is approaching, needs to talk to her and see her for what may be the last time. 

But Sirius has skipped the previous two days of classes, instead opting to lie on his bed staring blankly at the ceiling, and Remus hasn’t slept in days because nightmares the likes of which he’d never experienced are marring his nights. Sirius hasn’t said much of anything, and Remus has slipped back into his old habits of tugging at his hair and picking at his scabs. Neither of them are going home, and neither of them want to go to James’, and James knows that he can’t leave them there, alone. Not in the state they’re in. 

It’s the night after a full moon, and James has been up all night. He usually is on those days, sitting on his bed and switching between reading harder than ever and stroking Sirius’ hair, who cries harder on those nights. His entire body aches on those nights, because if there’s one thing James Potter hates it’s the feeling of not being able to do anything.

He’s been up all night, and he’s never felt so helpless. He starts crying, slumped against the cold tile floor of the bathroom, the heels of his hands pressed against his eyes in an attempt to hold the tears in, maybe. It’s the first time he’s cried in years.

He gets up after a while and tells Remus and Sirius that he loves them, but he’s going home to see his mother and he can’t keep taking care of him like he has. They’re both take aback, but nod, and tell him it’s fine and they never wanted to put anything like that on him. They learn to lean on each other instead of him, lean on the person who’s dealing with their own things, learn to lean on themselves eventually. Even though James would still do anything for them.

So. James Potter who has an inferiority complex. Who shoves his feelings under everything because they aren’t important. Who knows he’s lucky and uses that as an excise to invest his entire being into the lives of two other people. Who cares for them in a way that neither of them have experienced, who is the best friend either of them will ever have.
