So AO3 would not allow me to submit a complaint regarding a certain fanfic which keeps changing titles but was formerly known as Sexy Times with Wangxian. Since AO3 refuses to accept my complaint, allow me to air out my grievances here. Let it be known that it is not simple inconvenience that I complain of.

My complaint (which AO3 refuses to accept):

The author virtual1979 has been reported before multiple times due to the use of an overabundance of tags that has made the service nigh unusable by users who use screen-readers or older devices. They have been suspended before but have been found by OTW to not be in violation of the rules and has been allowed to resume enjoyment of the service. They have since begun to use the title and the fandoms field of the above-linked fic formerly known as Sexy Times with Wangxian to continue inconveniencing other users of the service. The title is changed on an almost daily basis and has gotten progressively longer. Malice is evident in that they formatted their summary to include only one letter per line before hitting enter and starting another paragraph. However, the heart of my complaint is that the most recent title of work contains both the N-slur (anti-Black) and the C-slur (anti-Asian) in an evidently taunting manner. The most recent title is nothing more than a random jumble of words designed to incite outrage, including a transphobic slur in addition to the racially-charged words. These are fighting words exempt from the protections of free speech, words and phrases which, in their common, everyday use and understanding are personally abusive and likely to incite violent reaction.

I understand that AO3 denounces censorship as a matter of policy. However, a line has been crossed into the territory of unprotected speech.

Ao3, I love and adore and completely and totally appreciate your volunteers, but I urge you to include an abuse of rights clause in your ToS. Just because you’re protecting free speech doesn’t mean there shouldn’t be limits to the exercise of such, not when the author of this fic is already causing so much frustration and active harm.

Thoughts on Cultural Gatekeeping

Ok, so I’ve been seeing this post about qipao (can’t find the orig link, alas) and how white people shouldn’t wear it going around tumblr. And recently there was this controversy about Jordan Clark, the guy running The Aswang Project and the fact that he’s a white Canadian. Let me preface this by saying I’m Filipino-Chinese. I’ve been around tumblr for a while and I noticed there’s been this extremely disconcerting rise towards gatekeeping of minority cultures. Now, it’s not my place to tell Western diaspora POC how to handle their cultural dynamics. But what I can tell you - and what I have plenty of experience with - is the fact that gatekeeping is not a good thing.

By saying gatekeeping is wrong, I don’t mean it’s wrong to bar access to your culture’s sacred objects, traditions, or rites. I mean to say it’s disingenuous to deny the members of a majority culture access to learning, sharing knowledge about, and experiencing the parts of your culture that’s actually meant to be shared, so long as it’s done in a respectful manner. Or banning them from access to it outright, on the basis of their race. Take the Aswang Project issue: Jordan Clark has never been anything but respectful to Filipino culture, has devoted hours of painstaking research to Filipino mythology and folklore, has credited all his sources, and corrected misinformation. On the whole, he strives to ensure his blog be an up-to-date and and free resource for anyone who wishes to learn about our culture and history. But now he’s facing backlash because some Filipino-American twitter users feel betrayed that they had been enjoying a resource created by a white man. When said white man has never hidden his identity, or the fact that he’s Canadian. Once again, I do not claim to know or have experienced POC minorities have experienced at the hands of white supremacy. I think it’s admirable that you’ve held onto your identity despite all the challenges. But word of advice from a third-generation Tsinay, who’s witnessed three generations of abuse within her family, all caused by racism from within the minority culture: gatekeeping, and prioritizing insularity and exclusivity strictly among the members of your race will only serve to hurt your community in the long run. It certainly hurt my Chinese grandfather, when he was practically disowned by the community for marrying my Filipino grandmother. It hurt my grandmother, who who was treated like an outsider and called a maidservant all her life. It hurt my mother, when her half-Filipino status ensured the members of the Chinese community never accepted her. This carried onto her marriage with my full-Chinese father, and the discrimination she suffered at the hands of his relatives. And this is still happening today, among my friends (the Great Wall is a real, painful thing, and I know people who weren’t allowed to get together with their Filipino boyfriends because of it, or who are experiencing problems with their Chinese SOs today).

Why restrict the wearing of a qipao to members of the Chinese community, when it is basically just a dress that has no religious or sacred significance at all? What does this mean for the mixed-race members of your community? Especially those who don’t have identifiably Chinese physical features? Why heap abuse on a man who has never been anything but respectful to a culture that’s not his, and who ensured the people who belonged to it had access to everything he’d learned? (I’ll have you know that most of the books about Filipino mythology and culture are either prohibitively expensive, or out of print.) And if you’re already this belligerent against the members of the majority culture trying to learn about your culture and doing so with respect, how will you treat the ones who marry into your culture? How will you treat their children? There is a difference between people who fetishize culture and those who wish to learn more in good faith, and lashing out at the curious and the well-meaning only serves to ensure they remain ignorant at best. At worst, they’ll get actively hostile, which’ll create more problems for you, and your children, and your grandchildren in the long run. Like what happened to my family, and my friends’ families. TL;DR: Gatekeeping will only faciliate racism. And racism is still racism, even by the minorities against the members of the majority culture. It helps no one, and hurts everyone.

On the Aswang Project Controversy

So I have just now discovered some controversy regarding The Aswang Project (on Facebook and Twitter, not here) and feel it my obligation as a moderately visible Filipino blog to provide some perspective. You need not necessarily agree with me. I wish only to offer some perspective.

I am also aware of the polarization of opinions between Filipinos in the Philippines and Filipino immigrants residing in North America, regarding the controversy. For the sake of total transparency, let me preface this by saying I belong to the former category.

At the heart of the controversy seems to be that Jordan Clarke, the man behind The Aswang Project, is white and Canadian. This has never been a secret. There has never been an attempt to conceal the fact that the owner of the Aswang Project is a non-Filipino. From the very beginnings of The Aswang Project, with the documentary The Aswang Phenomenon, Clarke had been very open about being a Canadian fascinated by Filipino folklore. At the bottom of every article on The Aswang Project blog, his About the Author states that he is a non-Filipino.

I am of the opinion that there is absolutely nothing wrong with the fact that Clarke is a white Canadian. He has expressed a genuine interest in and appreciation for Philippine folklore and mythologies, and has done invaluable work tracking down hard to find, out-of-print books on the subject and made the information contained in them accessible online for everyone. He has always cited his sources, be they primary source chronicles or works by Filipino historians/folklorists/anthropologists, and has admitted to and corrected erroneous information he had earlier inadvertently shared, i.e. the Code of Kalantiaw, the Romance of Sidapa and Bulan. As far as I can tell, Clarke had put in rigorous and participatory work to provide Filipinos and interested non-Filipinos the resources to begin their own research into Philippine mythology, folklore and culture.

Moreover, Clarke has never sought to eclipse the work of Filipino scholars or creators. He has always encouraged his audience to read the works of Filipino scholars, and has never exhibited less than the utmost respect for the work of Filipino folklorists such as Damiana Eugenio and F. Landa Jocano. He regularly shares art by Filipino artists and promotes books by Filipino authors. The goal is never to speak over but to elevate and promote.

A problem only arises when a non-Filipino (or even a Filipino) disrespects and/or misrepresents Filipino culture, or exploits it for their own gain to the detriment of Filipinos. Which is not the case here.

Good day to each and everyone who will be reach by this post. Im currently in need of your help, Its not really for me but for mother, she needs to have an operation. She has parovarian cyst. Last March 2021 she was operated at our local hospital but the operation was unsuccessful she is experiencing continuous bleeding and was advice to undergo another operation immediately but because its still pandemic there are procedure that we need to follow before she can have her operation, first she needs to have a negative swab test result and for me her watcher during her stay in the hospital needs to undergo the same procedure as her.

My mama and I had no communication for over a year but I reconciled with her upon learning her situation, even though she already undergone an operation she was still bleeding and her blood counts slowly getting lower and in order for her lessen the blood loss she was prescribed with higher dose medicine and was advice to take another surgery to remove the cyst. The first plan was to get us tested for covid and when the result came she can have her operation. It should be this week but Im afraid we are lack of funds and Im so bless a good person already covered the covid test. Our problem right now is the hospital bill and doctor's fee. At first I thought the doctor will remove her professional fee but sadly, it wasnt. Mama's surgery has an estimated value of hospital bill is 50,000-60,000 pesos and if possible I will seek help for her take home medicines 15,000pesos. (My goal is $1,700-$2,000)

Im sincerely knocking on everyone's kind heart, Please help me, please help my mama have her operation immediately please.. If we will wait for our government aid to be available to us it will be very expensive for us to buy her medicines.

Ps. I don't live with my mama, I just went to her place to see her and know her situation but I was alarmed to see the bleeding and how much she lost weight.

on top of that, we've been facing a major shortage in oxygen supply (to the point where the govt has decided to airlift oxygen from other nations), a shortage in hospital beds and services. The numbers keep rising and with the spread of the new strain, the scenario has transformed into something deadlier than ever.

our infrastructures are falling apart and we need all the help possible at this very moment so the nation can be atleast saved when there's still a chance. So I have read several people complaining that they can't be expected to know the "unwritten rules" of fandom. So here's what I wish people knew:

Fanfiction is fiction.

Fictional people are not real.

Fictional people do not have rights.

Fictional people cannot be abused.

Reading or writing about something does not mean the desire to do or support it in the real world.

If I find art upsetting/triggering/disgusting/outraging/unpleasant/squicky/distressing/offensive, it is on me not to read it, not the creators and hosts to remove it.

Curate your own experience. The back buttons exist for a reason.

If you don't trust yourself to do that, get someone you trust to do it for you.

Fandom is an adult space. Adults create and own and host fandom spaces. If minors want to participate, then the onus is on them and their parents/guardians/trusted adults to ensure they participate appropriately, not on strange adults to stop being adults.

You often don't know the assault status or mental health status or neurotype or race or nationality or religion or gender or sexuality or age of a creator or consumer, and they do not have to disclose to you to justify their fantasy.

AO3 is not a safe space. It is not intended to be a safe space. Proceed accordingly.

Just because you don't like something or find it offensive doesn't mean it is a "problem" that "has to be dealt with".

Most characters in anime are not white.

There is no onus on you to reblog or share anything.

Everyone makes mistakes in fandom and is less than their best self sometimes.

Persistent pseudonyms encourage long term relationships.

Ship wars are stupid.

Someone else enjoying things does not impact on your own enjoyment of other things.

Tagging and warning is a courtesy, not a requirement. Assume any fic might contain untagged content.

Rating is an imprecise art, not a science.

Don't hassle IP creators.

Most people who are in fandom are hoping to make connections based on a shared passion.

Trying to profit from transformative fanworks puts us all at risk.

No one is obligated to share your head canon or fanon.

Being kind rarely fails to pay off.

It is okay to block and remove people who make your experience unpleasant. You don't have to placate them. (Learn from my mistakes).

Britpicking is a good thing.

You don't have to justify why you like a canon/pairing/trope/kink. Sometimes navel gazing is fun, but you don't have an obligation to explain yourself, especially to strangers. I share the overwhelming desire to refute an unfair accusation, but the people accusing you are rarely doing so in good faith, so you're batting a losing wicket.

I'm not your Mum. (Well, okay, a very few of you can call me Mum or Mom, but if you are one of them you already know who you are ❤️)

If you aren't mature enough to take responsibility for your online experiences, you aren't mature enough to be in fandom spaces.

Typhoon Ulysses PH Relief Drive

Hello people, it’s me again, ancient_moonshine on ao3. Thanks to you and your generous donations, my friends and I were able to start our own charity drive which primarily seeks to help pandemic-affected jeepney drivers and their families. :D We’re currently aiding 9 jeepney operator and drivers’ associations within Metro Manila, with 637 members total. To date, DIWA has set up four community gardens for four different jeepney operators and drivers’ associations, as well as provided some of the drivers’ children with gadgets and internet for distance learning purposes. Through the Rotary Club, we’ve also coordinated with the Department of Health to provide them with maintenance medicines, and Rebisco food company to give them food packages. In the aftermath of Typhoon Rolly, we’ve also helped out evacuees from Guinobatan, Albay, by providing them with water after lahar buried their homes. Check us out at facebook.com/Diwa Uplifts. I’m sure people have heard about the terrible flooding Typhoon Ulysses caused in the Philippines [international name: Vamco], right at the heels of Typhoon Rolly [international name: Goni]. Our current beneficiaries are drivers belonging to the San Mateo Maly-Philcoa Jeepney Operators and Drivers Association based in San Mateo, Rizal City, and the Tumana-Balara Jeepney Operators and Drivers Association in Balara, Quezon City. The drivers of both JODAs live in Rizal and Marikina, the worst-affected cities in Metro Manila, and many of them wound up with their homes and belongings submerged in floodwaters. These people are now staying in evacuation centers, or living in their jeepneys in their terminals while they fix up the damage to their homes and try to salvage their belongings. The Philippines just got hit by the strongest tropical cyclone ever recorded in history

Yesterday, November 1, 2020, Typhoon Rolly (international name Goni) hit the central part of Luzon, Philippines.

Like the tweet said, it is the most powerful tropical cyclone to hit landfall in recorded history.

The typhoon has now passed, but the aftermath is bad. Houses destroyed, farmlands flooded, and many, many evacuees. If you would like to see what’s going on, check the hashtag #RollyPH on Twitter, there’s a lot, which brings me to the most important point
