The fact that nobody is talking about Secretâs new commercials pisses me off
This makes me so happy âşď¸
Yesssssđ I damn near cried
I LOVE THIS OMFG
YOOOOOOOOOOO THATS AMAZING!!!!!
Can someone help me understand I wanna cry to ..I feel something went over my head
The woman in the bathroom is trans and is scared that if she comes out of the stall the women that walked in will insult or harass her. but when she comes out they compliment her on her dress instead. The add ends with saying âstress tested for women.â It means Secret is including trans women in their definition of women.Â
I have reblogged this three times now, each one mentioning the fact that Secret not only included a trans woman, but that they /had the other women compliment her dress and treat her with respect/. I will reblog this every time I see it because itâs so important. More companies should involve trans people in their marketing - we do exist. Props to Secret for getting in on this movement. It makes me really happy to see more of the trans community represented in daily television.
Reblog the shit out of this
We need more positive things like this!
Okay but I did cry
The fact that the location of the worldâs oldest tree has to be kept secret encapsulates everything thatâs bad about humanity.
Thereâs a story about that, actually.
According to the smithsonianmag.com, the worldâs oldest bristlecone pine was a nearly 5,000 year old tree later named Prometheus. In 1964, a man named Donald Rusk Currey decided to use an increment borer to determine its age (a process that cuts a small hole into the center of the tree trunk, and is not intended to kill the tree). Unfortunately, the borer got stuck. He and a park ranger cut the tree down to remove the equipment, and when they counted the tree rings, they realized their mistake. Oops. This incident lead to better protection of the remaining bristlecone pines.
Thereâs some wiggle room about what can be called âthe worldâs oldest living tree.â The worldâs oldest living single tree is the tree that the OP is referring to. Its name is Methuselah, and it is also around 5,000 years old. Since its location is unknown, nobody knows what it looks like. But it might be this tree here:
But technically, it isnât the oldest living tree. Let me explain.
It turns out that root systems of trees can send up genetically identical saplings (aka clones) via their root systems. Like so:
Which means the original trunk can die, but since the root system is attached to other trees which give it nutrients, it lives on. The root system can theoretically do this indefinitely. So the tree trunks could be fairly young, but the roots could be large and very, very, very old. So the oldest âtreeâ isnât a small grove, itâs a logic-defying forest.
Iâd like you to meet Pando.
This male quaking aspen covers 106 acres and is ancient. Iâm talking an estimate of 80,000 years. The trees you can see are just âshootsâ he sent up, and their average age is 130 years old. He is his own forest. If trees could talk, Iâd love to hear what he had to say.
He might be dying, due to insects and drought (hmm, wonder what could have happened to cause that). A section of Pando is being studied in an attempt to find a solution. But in the meantime, we can enjoy him for his beauty.
TLDR: Yes please, protect the trees from humans!
Okay but after seeing this I started doing it too and itâs amazing how many men Iâve run into bc they expected me to move
Gotta try it
I work (and walk) on a college campus. Iâve lost count of how many men Iâve smacked shoulders with.
Recently, I was standing outside my sonâs classroom waiting to talk to his teacher. I stood on one side of the hallway, not even close to the center. At some point, a man came walking along. I was standing right in his path, but the hallway was empty, so I logically expected him to swerve around me. Instead he kept walking right toward me, got to me, and stopped, as if waiting for me to get out of his way. I didnât; I just smiled politely at him. He finally walked around me, clearly annoyed that I hadnât leapt out of his manly path.
Now Iâm wishing Iâd leapt aside, taken off my jacket and laid it on the floor before him, then bowed deeply and said, âMy Liege!â
I also work at a college campus. I smack shoulders sometimes, but I find that if I stare straight ahead and follow the advice below, people get the heck out of the way.
Honestly this post changed how I carry myself when walking alone in public, or in a situation where Iâm the one leading. People definitely move for the murder gaze.
Confirmed. I once had to rush back inside a convention hall as the con was closing in order to a retrieve a sick friendâs medication, and I didnât understand why people in the crowd were jumping out of my way (literallyâone guy vaulted a table) until I realized I was dressed as the Winter Soldier and doing the Murder Walk because thatâs just how I walk in those boots. I got the meds, got out, and made a mental note.
I repeated the experiment later, wearing the boots but otherwise my usual clothing and mimicking the expression I thought Iâd had at that moment. People parted like I was Charlton Heston.
I now wear that style of boots whenever possible. I recently had a man do a double-take as I walked by and ask me, politely, where I had served because I âlooked like a soldier.â Iâm not current or former military. I was wearing a flowy purple peasant top and looked as un-soldierlike as possible.
Moral of the story: wear comfortable shoes, square your shoulders, and walk like youâve been sent to murder Captain America.
WALK LIKE YOUâVE BEEN SENT TO MURDER CAPTAIN AMERICA
Itâs called the Murder Strut.
ITâS BACK!!!!!! I was searching for this to show my daughter the other day and couldnât find it. Iâm so glad ITâS BACK!! I will always reblog the Murder Strut!!
A guy on a bike went around me because he could tell I had no intention of moving. Thanks to this post.
This post went from Scientific to Feminist to Educational to HILARIOUS!
#make men get the fuck out of the way 2k17
I do this now. Stand my ground. Men look flabberghasted that i wont move out of the way. The most annoying thing is when iâm walking along holding Superpups hand (heâs 2.5 years old), and people walk right up to us and expect to go between us⌠so for me to let go of my toddlers hand for the sake of them. One person i actually had to put my free hand out and onto their chest to block the person to stop before they ploughed into us.
Medicine should never have been privatized in the first place. The concept of profiting off of human desperation and the need for life-saving medicine is, philosophically, intrinsically, and morally wrong both as a fundamental concept and in practice. The fact that Martin Shkreli was ever able to buy an AIDS drug and increase its price 5000% is indicative of a problem even bigger than a truly evil, despicable, and selfish human being; it is indicative of the problem of the current system of for-profit pharmaceuticals with obviously inadequate price regulation.
i hate so much when rich people claim they could live on minimum wage
you canât. you absolutely fucking canât.
itâs not just about how literally impossible it can be or how the rich are so accustomed to luxury they wouldnât be able to stomach being poor â itâs about the fact that any experience rich people have had with poverty was temporary.
âto prove that $8/hr is humane i lived on minimum wage for a month â and it was fine. you just have to spend wisely and be frugal.â
i promise any rich person whoâs done (if they even have) something like that was ACHING by the end of that month. that week. they were edging out the end of that month thinking âafter this i can go back to my cozy $100k a year, i just have to get this month over withâ
itâs livable, right? this guy proved it. one month and heâs sure â itâs totally doable! he ate gross food and kept his lights off and his AC off and scrounged up change for gas for a month and it wasnât THAT bad!
but manâŚ. imagine if that was your whole life.
iâm sure they felt a little stressed after realizing how tight the budget was at the end of that month⌠imagine that but for years. years and years with no end in sight. you never have the relief of going back to your $100k salary and flat screen TV. itâs years upon years of pent up stress and anxiety
what if your car breaks down? what if you miss your bus? what if you have an unexpected charge on your card and overdraft? what if the kids want pizza? what if you call out sick from work? what if you canât afford christmas presents?
and on top of the stress, youâre poor and you donât have much free time because you take all the hours you can get to make ends meet. instead of cooking you have to eat shitty banquet and michelinas meals because delivery and takeout are too expensive. and the more tired you get, the more exhausted, the more shitty food you consume just to try to keep going.
and you probably donât have good healthcare!
youâre stressed, youâre eating poorly, your body hurts from all the work and youâre too poor to pay for medical help, things like car repair fall by the wayside in order to provide, youâre sad, you start drinking to cope, etc
this is the cycle poor people are fucking trapped in. this is why the minimum wage is a fucking failure to all impoverished people in america.
this is the toll âjust being frugalâ takes on poor people after living for decades like that. adddiction, mental illness, lawbreaking â these things are associated with low class and poor people because itâs what happens to us and what we resort to when the system fails us.
oh no, the govât tries to ruin lives of our younger generation AGAIN.

âUnder a new plan to prepare them for life after high school, Chicago Public Schools students would have to show an acceptance letter to a university, community college, apprenticeship, trade school, internship, or the armed services.â
So more poor kids will join the military to ensure they get a high school diploma or theyâll be held back. *dystopia instensifies*

During a military campaign, Vlad the Impaler, the basis for Dracula, once pulled his troops out of a major engagement in a valley at dusk so that the sun was in their enemiesâ eyes. Once they were over the hill, they set loose a bunch of rabid bats who flew away from the sun (towards the enemy) and attacked them, leading to significant infection in their ranks, and Vladâs eventual victory. Because of how the bats appeared from where Vladâs soldiers appeared to be at dusk, myth stated that the soldiers turned into bats at night, which is where the âDracula can change into a batâ thing came from.

during the Ottoman Empire, the Sultan Ibrahim I had 280 of his concubines drowned in the ocean after ONE of them slept with another man.
The earths carbon levels fell by 700 million tons because Genghis Khan killed so many people
King James (the one known for revising the Bible) liked to watch women give birth. Thatâs where the âtraditionâ of women laying on their backs to give birth comes from.
Previous to that it was common for women to have chairs with holes in them and straw underneath, so they could sit on this special chair and let gravity help with the birthing process.
Spicy foods were thought to increase libido and cause children to masturbate. To prevent kids from touching themselves at night, a man named Kellogg invented the blandest combination of cereals, marketed it at kids, and called it Corn Flakes
At the Battle of Gettysburg during the American Civil War, a small group of Union soldiers had run out of ammo against a large group of the Confederate Army. In a panic, the Union soldiers sprinted at them, screaming, with only bayonets drawn. The entire Confederate Army that was present turned and ran away in fear, not knowing that they had literally no ammunition.
When the Roman Emperor Caligula went to invade Britain he stood on the coast of Gaul with his army and suddenly declared war on Neptune, God of the Sea. He had his men collect sea shells from the shore as âspoils from the Oceanâ.
Oh and he appointed his horse to the senate.
During the Austro-Prussian war of 1868, Liechtenstein sent over an army of 80 people, but ended up coming back with 81 people because they befriended a guy on the other side.
People refused to send art and sculptures to be displayed at the Chicago Worldâs Fair because of Chicagoâs history with fire. They had to fireproof the Fine Arts building to get people to agree to loan them their art. A year after the fair closed most of the grounds were destroyed by fire but the Fine Arts building survived. Itâs now the Museum of Science and Industry.
The carbon emissions thing from Ghenghis Khan is not the whole story. He also planted trees wherever he conquered land because he liked trees and thought they were important. He conquered enough to make an impact on the global climate.
Radu III, brother of Vlad III( Vlad the Impaler) Â nearly killed Mehmed II, the future Sultan of the Ottomanâs, after Mehmed invited him up to his chambers. Radu, seemingly unaware that the offer was sexual in nature, was startled when Mehmed embraced and then tried to kiss him. Radu stabbed the prince in the leg, then ran and hid in a tree. They later became lovers, and maintained a relationship for the rest of their lives
Just googled the last one because holy shit thatâs magnificent and seemed to good to be true, but not only did it actually happen, but I also learned that radu was known as âradu the beautifulâ

One thing I think is useful to conceptualize when thinking about the severity of depression is figuring out what counts as a âtaskâ to your brain
for example, healthy people outlining the tasks they need to do that day might be something likeÂ
- class - work - homework
if a healthy person is having a low energy day, maybe it becomesÂ
- make breakfast - go to class - class - go to work - work - come home from work - work on an essay - do 2 readingsÂ
a depressed person, on a high energy day will probably see that same day asÂ
- make breakfast - eat breakfast - take meds - shower - get dressed - walk to bus - take bus ⌠etc
a depressed person, on a low energy day will see that same day as
- wake up - get out of bed - walk to bathroom - use bathroom - stand back up - walk to kitchen - open fridge - take out juice - set on counter - go to cabinet - reach up arm - take down glass - unscrew lid of juice carton - pour juice - drink the juice - finish the juice âŚetc
the sort of chronic exhaustion manifests in how each âtaskâ takes a certain amount of energy and when you have depression, what begins to take that amount of energy- and thus, cognitively count as a âtaskâ- are smaller and smaller subdivisions of what other people consider tasks.Â
And the more âtasksâ you do, the less energy you have, and the smaller the subdivisions must be to take equivalent amounts of energy. And the longer that âto doâ list of tasks is, the more exhausting and overwhelming and hopeless it feels, which creates a feedback loop of dysfunction.
So say our depressed person on a low energy day gets all the way to finishing their glass of juice. Theyâve actually gotten through a lot of tasks! Theyâve tried really hard.Â
But to a healthy person, even on a low energy day, that probably looks like not having done anything- not having gotten through any tasks. And when our depressed person is surrounded by healthy people, they will likely internalize that they havenât done anything, and further that they canât complete any tasks no matter how hard they try. And that feeds worthlessness and suicidal ideationÂ
That, I think, is why itâs so important to encourage your depressed and chronically low-energy friends when they accomplish tasks, even if theyâre operating at a level of subdivision that you donât recognize. It is an accomplishment to get water and actually drink it for some folks. It is an accomplishment to get to class or to work.Â
And acknowledging how hard someone is trying and how much energy theyâre putting towards accomplishing those tasks can make a huge difference in whether they feel worthless and hopeless or whether they feel like itâs worth it to keep doing what they can.
âMaking employees work on Thanksgiving is evil!â
Friend, I 100% agree. But if you want to work towards stopping it, you need to not shop on Thanksgiving. Maybe you by yourself may not mean much, but enough people together refusing to do business with companies on Thanksgiving will greatly discourage corporations from continuing the practice.
This is how you âvote with your wallet.âÂ
As a cashier, this is 100% correct. If people demand enough to shop on holidays, we will be open on holidays. So if you oppose it, I donât want you at my register, condescendingly critiquing that Iâm working. You need to not show up that day.
