I do think the ability to emoji-react is a net win for human communication. not only does it give you an outlet for 'I see and acknowledge this but don't have a verbal response' but it also adds a pleasing alethiometer element to things
my coworker announces that he's off to the dentist. someone reacts with a tooth emoji. is this a statement of dentist solidarity? a wish for my coworker to return with more (or fewer?) teeth than he set out with? simple word association? who can say
do not go gentle into that good night
be a bit of a bitch about it
can't in good conscience leave this out
you have this superpower! BUT you have this side-effect
is it worth it?
yes!!
the side effect is bad but ITS WORTH IT
meh it's okay
the side effect makes it unusable/not worth it
Results/option I didn't think of

I love this because like 99% of this kind of paleoart is patriarchal Man the Hunter type fantasies but these guys are just like “fuck it we’re outta here”

can not overstate that the reason hand-tailored items were so common 100 years ago is because every family had a dedicated home tailor called a "wife" who did 100% of the domestic labor do NOT romanticize a pre-readymade clothing life unless you're willing to go to bat for every individual having a secondary part time job as a tailor
Ok but village cobblers were a thing and there isn't a cobbler within 15 miles of me
There’s a cobbler 15 minutes walk from me. He doesn’t make shoes from scratch, just repairs
Village cobblers were a thing and so were village laundresses. Yes, there were women who did 100% of ALL domestic labor, EVERY task, but tbh that's... probably statistically a weird outlier of a situation and mostly found in extreme and fucked-up circumstances like "during the colonization of the American West". As soon as you have 2-5 families living within shouting distance of each other, humans tend to instinctively start arranging at least some division of labor.
It might look something like this: Goodwife A is great at getting stains out of clothes and enjoys laundry as a task, so everyone takes their laundry to her. Goodwife B pays her in milk and butter from their cow, and Goodwife C shows up to keep her company and take care of EVERYONE'S mending and darning, and Spinster D runs her father's bakery so she pays in bread and muffins, and Alewife E pays with the best beer in the county, and nobody's kitchen gardens are as productive as Granny F's and Widow G's so they've got veggies and herbs galore to exchange.
We DO criminally underestimate the value and prevalence of women's labor in history, but we also underestimate how much more fluidly communities functioned than they do now. Every woman absolutely did learn how to sew from the time she was a tiny child -- but once you're an adult and you've learned that you Hate sewing more than anything, maybe you make a friend who loves it (or at least who doesn't mind it). Then, as long as you buy your own cloth, she's happy to sew clothes for both your family and hers in exchange for you doing all the cooking, or watching the kids and teaching them to read and do basic sums, or churning the butter from the milk of both families' cows.
An awareness of historical women's labor is crucial -- but without an awareness of women's businesses, we can sometimes end up playing into the conservative propaganda that people don't need each other, that it's possible to pull yourself up by your own bootstraps, that women are incapable and unenterprising, and that therefore their place is In The Home, being worked to the bone doing every task (and if they don't do every task, then they're lazy and a failure of a wife).
Do not romanticize a pre-readymade clothing life unless you're prepared to come over and clean my house and do my dishes while I'm sewing your dress.
Also i hate to do this but 100 years ago was 1926 and they absolutely did have readymade clothing by then.
From Wikipedia: "In the late 1860s, twenty-five percent of garments produced in the US were ready-made, but by 1890, the portion had risen to sixty percent. By 1951, ninety percent of garments sold in the United States were ready-made."
So good at feeling not so good at expressing

I feel like we don’t talk enough about how having chronic illness and/or chronic pain makes you irritable. It makes you grumpy. It can make you a not very fun person to be around.
We don’t talk enough about the ugly sides of chronic illness/pain. The parts where you feel like a bad person not because of the pain in of itself but because everyone else thinks you are pushing them away. The times when you don’t bear it like a saint and the roughest edges of your personality come out. Where maybe you do hurt other people’s feelings. Its a complicated side of the experience thats resists an easy answer.
Another more mundane but perhaps more insidious side to chronic illness, chronic fatigue, chronic pain, and probably other is the way it can hurt your friendships not in such a direct way as I describe in the post above but because you simply can’t be there. All the times when you have to cancel plans because you don’t have the energy or the ability to be with people. All the times when you can’t make plans in the first place.
It makes me feel like such a terrible friend to say I can’t hang out with you. And it makes me feel like I can’t ever truly deepen my friendships because I’m not able to put the time in that other people can.
happy 20 year anniversary of Neil banging out the tunes!
though every rat is special, it's a wonderful and unusual thing for their accomplishments to be remembered and cherished by so many people so many years later. we're all so fortunate to know about the rat who banged out the tunes!
thank you to all the people who sent me reference photos of their beloved rats for this piece!!! credits under the cut!
I love this text post so I drew it
I think part of the problem is that, like, a hundred years ago there were Extremely Strict gender roles for both men and women, and then due to the hard work of a century of feminists (thank you feminists) we have massively expanded what a woman can be. We are nearing (hopefully) the point where women really can be Anything.
However, the idea of what a man can be has not expanded in the same way. Every man has to be stoic, loud, take up space, and never show weakness. Allowing men to be sensitive, emotional, soft, pretty, and feminine used to be one of the goals of feminism. After all, how are we supposed to see ourselves as truly equal if we still have such strict rules guiding gendered behavior?
Recently, I have seen feminism (trans exclusionary and trans inclusive) solidifying those strict rules of manhood instead of breaking them down. The idea that all men are agressive, stubborn, and will physically overpower you has been parroted so many times, it almost feels like fact. It is forcing —not the men themselves— but the idea of men into the role of the evil wrongdoer. The ways in which terfs have used this image to harm trans women are myriad and obvious.
It used to be common knowledge that feminism also ought to benefit men in this way. If the sexes were truly equal, then men could act feminine, and women could act masculine without social repercussions. This breakdown of gender roles is a good thing! It is freeing for all of us to remove the arbitrary rules guiding gendered behavior.
Men should wear flower crowns and glitter beards and dresses and cry in public and tell their friends they love them. Your idea of men needs to include them doing all of these things. You need to make space in your head for men to be sensitive and thoughtful and caring and safe.
highly recommend: making that character’s mourning WORSE!!!! make them play pretend with that corpse. make it seem like they’re moving on until they start telling the new person to start dyeing their hair the color of the person they lost and start calling them their name to make it clear that they’re hanging out with this person now to try and make them into the old one. make your grieving character put people in the same situation the person they’re mourning died in and have them hope they die to prove it was unpreventable. make your grieving character put people in the same situation the person they’re mourning died in and have them hope they live to prove that it wasn’t doomed to happened. make your grieving characters actively harm the people around them and the memory of the person they lost. I love you morally dubious grieving characters
Due to my weird childhood and my weird brain, I have this very unhelpful compulsion to conceal Everything I do from Everyone. I Cannot be observed performing any action, no matter how mundane. My nervous system is convinced I'm gonna, like, Get In Trouble for eating food at dinnertime or sleeping in my bed at bedtime.
I've taken to asking myself, "Okay does this task actually require subterfuge or am I stealing a balloon on Free Balloon Day"

didnt we all do do this last year? it was interesting data because the poll numbers showed something like 60% of the users the post reached, which was in the tens of thousands, were profoundly autistic. which is completely logical based on how the site behaves as a cultural entity it was just interesting to see it confirmed
