— ⟢ CONCEPT —✧— DEATH IN THE AFTERNOON ⟣ —
i think the near-extinction of people making fun, deep and/or unique interactive text-based browser games, projects and stories is catastrophic to the internet. i'm talking pre-itch.io era, nothing against it.
there are a lot of fun ones listed here and here but for the most part, they were made years ago and are now a dying breed. i get why. there's no money in it. factoring in the cost of web hosting and servers, it probably costs money. it's just sad that it's a dying art form.
anyway, here's some of my favorite browser-based interactive projects and games, if you're into that kind of thing. 90% of them are on the lists that i linked above.
A Better World - create an alternate history timeline
Alter Ego - abandonware birth-to-death life simulator game
Seedship - text-based game about colonizing a new planet
Sandboxels or ThisIsSand - free-falling sand physics games
Little Alchemy 2 - combine various elements to make new ones
Infinite Craft - kind of the same as Little Alchemy
ZenGM - simulate sports
Tamajoji - browser-based tamagotchi
IFDB - interactive fiction database (text adventure games)
Written Realms - more text adventure games with a user interface
The Cafe & Diner - mystery game
The New Campaign Trail - US presidential campaign game
Money Simulator - simulate financial decisions
Genesis - text-based adventure/fantasy game
Level 13 - text-based science fiction adventure game
Miniconomy - player driven economy game
Checkbox Olympics - games involving clicking checkboxes
BrantSteele.net - game show and Hunger Games simulators
Murder Games - fight to the death simulator by Orteil
Cookie Clicker - different but felt weird not including it. by Orteil.
if you're ever thinking about making a niche project that only a select number of individuals will be nerdy enough to enjoy, keep in mind i've been playing some of these games off and on for 20~ years (Alter Ego, for example). quite literally a lifetime of replayability.
since this post blew up, i've been wanting to do an addition with all of the recommendations from the comments and tags. but there's a lot of them. some people might be crazy enough to sit down and seriously put them all in one post with descriptions. those people are honestly sick in the head.
anyway, here's all of the recommendations from the reblogs. not all of them are text-based, but it's a great mixture of styles. also don't forget the links in the second paragraph of the OP which will take you to FMHY where there are a bunch more games listed.

thank you to everyone who contributed and the creators. please be sure to show them some love where possible.
They got new photos of the moon,
I knew she had colors hiding in there 🥹
Correction to the link sourced by OP! The Artemis II team did not take these photographs. These were shot by a Ukrainian student named Ildar Ibatullin sometime in the last year or so. Furthermore, the Moon does not have these actual colors in reality; Ildar does a lot of post processing and compositing to saturate the colors in order to artistically represent the mineral composition of the lunar surface.
If you would like to see photos taken by the astronauts aboard Artemis II (and more!), here is the repository that NASA is keeping.
pov: you're making history. you're working with the most advanced technology in the world. outlook still doesn't fucking work.
being a humanities major who’s friends with stem majors is so funny because you’ll ask your friends what they’re doing today and they’re like “UGH it’s so stressful i have to stabilize the reactor core for my nuclear power midterm and then i have to build the supercomputer from i have no mouth yet i must scream for my electrical engineering homework :/ what about you” and you’re like “oh well i have to read a fun little book and write an essay about gender.” and they still think you have it worse
Being a stem major who's friends with humanities majors is ALSO funny bc you ask what's goin on with them and they're like "oh yeah my day's pretty good! I only have to read 50 pages for this one class today and half a book for another one. It's much better than last week where I read three books and wrote a 10 page paper about their overlapping motifs for one class while also researching a niche period of time that our library doesn't have any resources on. How's it been for you?" and you're like "oh I have a lil packet of fun math puzzles due tomorrow." and they look at you like you're carrying the weight of the universe on your back
This is your reminder that just because something falls within the skillset you've practiced, so you can do it and you don't find it particularly hard or stressful relative to other things, it doesn't mean it isn't actually hard work you should be proud of yourself for accomplishing!
this applies to writing and art, too
ok. i survived 25 years outside the international space station. who gives a shit
Technically most moss is outside the international space station
i truly wish she was in a better game
Stuff for Laceswap, a collab idea between me and vorenet.bsky.social!
An older Lace in a long-term relationship with Hornet gets swapped in time with her younger self right before her first fight with Hornet at Deep Docks. Now the two Laces have to find a way back to their own times and navigate things with their respective Hornets 👀

Gonna eat my hands from how much tumblr is unaware of Bad Bunny
Bad Bunny been doing it and killing it before harry styles was doing it- he’s been wearing skirts and doing his nails just cause and it even got my older brother who is straight painting his nails cause he realized “yeah who give a fuck I like it” and bad bunny kissing men and women on stage being open about the LGBT+ community and speaking out to about the transphobic stuff that happened in Puerto Rico. Like it’s not bad for people not being unaware of him but it makes me wanna rattle people when I see them praising stuff Harry has done calling him iconic and the first of it all for this movement when people like Bad bunny,Prince, etc been killing it
Bad bunny be upon you
This is also VERY important to note + some people can’t read Spanish
Never forget
Just wanted to add more to this
Bad Bunny did half of the music video for “Yo Perreo Sola” in drag. And I cannot emphasize how much the genre is saturated with machismo bullshit and Bad Bunny just refuses to participate in it.
His video for “Caro” is also a celebration of breaking gender norms. Most of the video is performed by Jazmyne Joy as Bad Bunny.
Like I fully understand if you don’t normally listen to reggaeton or Latino music in general. But I cannot express to you how huge and popular he is. He is the highest streaming artist worldwide right now. He’s largely adored by every young Latino out there. He’s having a great time and doing amazing things.
Re: Yo Perreo Sola, the song itself is about leaving women the fuck alone when they say no I don’t want to dance with you, building on the tradition of reggaeton legend Ivy Queen:
who’s been making hits for decades that directly confront gender and toxic masculinity. One of my favorites is “Que Lloren”:
a) because it’s a banger, b) because she got loads of celebrities to appear in the video, and c) because of the double meaning of the title.
“Que lloren” literally translates to “let them cry” as in let men cry, it’s good for them and everyone does it because love effects us all, but the same phrase also means “let them cry” in the same way an English speaker might say “die mad about it.” Let them cry, she said with the least bothered shrug in human history.
She also hosted the podcast Loud, which comprehensively explores the history of reggaeton as a genre if you’re interested in that sort of thing.
I know folks have been sharing this link on other posts, but &udm=14 works well:

i'm begging you guys to start pirating shit from streaming platforms. there are so many websites where you can stream that shit for free, here's a quick HOW TO:
1) Search for: watch TITLE OF WORK free online
2) Scroll to the bottom of results. Click any of the "Complaint" links
3) You will be taken to a long list of links that were removed for copyright infringement. Use the 'find' function to search for the name of the show/movie you were originally searching for. You will get something like this (specifics removed because if you love an illegal streaming site you don't post its url on social media)
4) each of these links is to a website where you can stream shit for free. go to the individual websites and search for your show/movie. you might have to copy-paste a few before you find exactly what you're looking, but the whole process only takes a minute. the speed/quality is usually the same as on netflix/whatever, and they even have subtitles! (make sure to use an adblocker though, these sites are funded by annoying popups)
In conclusion, if you do this often enough you will start recognizing the most dependable websites, and you can just bookmark those instead. (note: this is completely separate from torrenting, which is also a beautiful thing but requires different software and a vpn)
you can also download the media in question (look for a "download" button built into the video window, or use a browser extension such as Video DownloadHelper.)
if the "Complaint" links are not visible for you:
Option 1: try the DuckDuckGo search engine instead (bonus: dedicated to privacy! doesn't track your data!)
Option 2: go directly to LumenDatabase.org (the website that collects the complaints--and therefore the removed links) and search for the title you want. look for results titled "DMCA (Copyright) Complaint to Google" featuring the media you're looking for. Proceed to Step 3 (above).
personally, i'm a huge fan of r/FREEMEDIAHECKYEAH. they keep their links up to date and they also rank them, basically. they also have all kinds of little pages explaining how to safely pirate shit.
^^^^what they said. I'm surprised people are still reblogging this post now that google's flushed itself down the toilet. so here is your
2026 UPDATE:
just go to r/FreeMediaHeckYeah and r/Piracy. it's easier, more reliable, and will take care of all your piracy needs!
We should go back to calling things wack. Shit's never been wacker
So if for some goddamn reason you still have tiktok? Maybe delete it
This shit is dystopian as fuck
Delete it as soon as you can do not fucking use the app at all
Yeah, so, "TikTok is officially under the control of a cadre of pro-Trump billionaires including Larry Ellison."
