Millennial’s Graduation
Hi. It's me again, breathing and alive.
Currently writing this post and concurrently shutting down my other blog because it disgusts me (like a lot). I hate being so awkwardly existent in Google search (yes, sometimes I do Google my own name – just in case).
Bih, let me continue my speech.
Today is not gonna be the day when I tell you my “daily life as a junior lawyer”. Instead, I want to talk about resignation. Pretty common kan ya, terlebih di dunia pekerjaan, and plus, at the time where every millennials are all adventurers at heart.
Employee retention has become a concern nowadays, as millennials are drawn to the concept of job-hopping. A survey conducted by Deloitte stated that 43 percent of millennials plan to leave their current jobs within two years and only 28 percent have plans to stay beyond five years. Not shocking. Because for the millennials, it’s not always about the salary; it’s a combination of environment, culture, and flexibility. Sometimes, it’s even more than that.
Anyway, my silly thought comes because I’ve seen too many farewells with unnecessary drama. Workplaces must now realize that employees leave for reasons (if not for one reason), and most of the time, it’s not always a personal one. Sometimes, they don’t fit in with the job, they are eager to do something else, or because they are simply unhappy. Happiness does matter; it gives you purpose in life, and it comes in different shapes. If happiness means doing what you’re passionate about, then go for it.
Kadang kita terjebak dengan gambaran bahwa kebahagiaan merupakan konsep yang abstrak, mengejar kebahagiaan adalah suatu hal yang sia-sia, and that “happiness” is merely a state of mind. I tell you it is not. Yes you may feel happy for a few hours doing the paperwork, but then you can feel depressed for the rest of the day. Remember that stress is only great in certain amounts; so if it’s excessive, it’s a disaster. For me, being unhappy in a workplace is a legitimate reason for one to submit a resignation letter. If it doesn’t make you happy to stay, why bother? Isn’t it a common reason for couples to break up and married people to divorce? Then why can’t we use it as a common reason to quit?
Mengutip salah satu kolega saya ketika mengajukan resign dengan alasan tidak bahagia, kemudian di-challenge oleh work place-nya bahwa pengajuan resignnya ialah sebuah kesalahan, ia mengatakan satu kalimat, “If only pursuing happiness is a mistake, let it be my mistake.”
My genuine reaction:
Point is, alangkah menyenangkannya jika perpisahan (apapun itu bentuknya) disikapi dengan dewasa.
The idea of graduation in the workplace is actually a form of my disappointment towards some people who refuse to embrace separation. I only want them to understand that at some point, going in a different direction is okay, that quitting is also okay. Resignation is inevitable. So, rather than despising those who choose to travel in a different boat, why don’t we remember them as a graduated family member who has contributed to the firm and brought so much joy to our lives?
For my fellows who decide to resign, this is for you. I hope you’ll find what you’ve been looking for. And promise me to be happy; at least happier.
