Wait what happened to Thomas Sanders???

Basically, Thomas Sanders (who, btw, is gay) used to be basically the celebrated Unproblematic Fav Uwu of Tumblr and Vine. Everyone loved him, everyone praised him for being inclusive and positive, making fun and unique vines that were appropriate and enjoyable for any age group.

Then one day he got an aphobic ask (I honestly don’t remember what this was even in response to, I think it was some really innocent one-off “I hope asexuals have a good day” type of post or something like that, idek), to which he wrote a long and sincere response that basically summed up to “Hey, that’s not a nice attitude to have, please take a moment to think about how other people must feel and why it’s so important to you to shut them down”

Within literal hours (and this is something I witnessed myself, I was online when it all went down), a smear campaign against him had started. Suddenly even people who had previously been huge fans of him were shit-talking him left and right, declaring him cringey, and grasping at straws to make “callout posts” for him. One popular argument I remember hearing was- And I shit you not, I am not making this up- He was a “pedophile” because he made videos for a family demographic and has a young-looking face, but was 29 or whatever and therefore “pretending to be a kid” or whatever the fuck. He even, gasp, made vines about high school, despite not being a high schooler himself! (Dan Green voice) That’s called “acting”, children!

His popularity never really recovered, and these days he’s mostly considered “cringey” by a large portion of the internet due to the main demographic most of his fans fall into, because you know it’s hip and cool to shame young girls and queer kids for the things that bring them joy.

So yeah, TL;DR used to be pretty well liked by the majority of Tumblr with nobody really having anything bad to say about him, expressed support for aspecs one day, immediately fell victim to exclusionist harrassment and is now at best considered just a cringey teenage girl thing.

Also part of the “pedophile” smear campaign included:

1. He has tags for not quite safe for work selfies on his blog (#nsfw and #tsbutt) (not nudes or even lewds, just pictures including his clothed butt.)

2. He accepts nsfw fanart from fans, but ONLY if the artist is 18+

3. There was ONE time where an underage artist submitted a nsfw art piece and Thomas posted it, because said artist removed their age from their bio, so Thomas had no idea it was made by a minor. He deleted the post as soon as this information came to light.

But exclusionists took all of this, mashed it with their “oh but he’s so childish, he acts like a kid even though he’s nearly 30, he must be hiding something!” And ran so far with it that Thomas Sanders severely suffered for it. Even his fans got shit for liking him. A lot abandoned him out of fear that a similar campaign would start against them.

So yeah. Fuck exclusionists, honestly.

He got smeared for videos he made With high schoolers as well, high schoolers from a drama club from his old high school, whom he was asked back to help out by his own teachers. Which is commonplace, and not sketchy in the slightest. He made wholesome, age-appropriate content and STILL got “cancelled” because exclusionists can’t handle it when good queer people who don’t share their dumb views are successful.

Yesterday, one of my preschoolers came up to me very concerned, and said, “Miss ____, this book doesn’t have any pages!”

Now, this kid is only three, and I can’t always understand what he says because he’s still so little. However, he carries himself and has the conversational lilt of an 80-year-old academic, so I absolutely believed him. Also, like any library, not all of our books have been as gently used as one might like, so there’s always a chance that the pages of the book this kid was holding actually had fallen out somewhere, and he was only holding the cover. I hurried over to see if this was the case and he opened the book for me, still very concerned.

He had only opened to the end sheet, that blank page at the front of a book. I turned the page for him to reveal the title page. This look of absolute relief crossed his face and he went, “Oh, silly me. I didn’t look hard enough!”

I love kids.

if you do this, congrats, you’ve totally defeated the purpose of the tagging system!

AO3 is not tiktok. it is not run by a mega-corporation that sanitizes content for advertisability and shadowbans or deletes content. it’s an ARCHIVE. 

by doing this, it means people won’t be able to exclude or include your tags. and if they use a text-to-speech reader, you’ve made it ten times harder to understand. 

this goes for tumblr too!! if you put “su!c!de tw” anybody who has “suicide tw” blacklisted will still see your post. it’s not a warning if the words aren’t able to be read or recognized by the systems.

no hate if you’ve been doing this! just fix your tags and don’t do it in the future.

Yes, it did. Let me take a second to explain.

So for anyone out of the loop, here’s a TL;DR at the beginning so you don’t have to hop to the end: a therapist made a TikTok about her clients “trauma dumping” on the first session, she got bullied for it, she’s no longer on the app.

Now, to delve a little deeper:

HAVING THIS KIND OF MINDSET AS A THERAPIST CAN GET PEOPLE LITERALLY KILLED. THIS IS VICTIM BLAMING AND AN ABUSE OF A MEDICAL LICENSE.

See, people seem to have watered down the word “trauma dumping” to where it’s now essentially meaningless. To give a quote from USA Today: “trauma dumping is the act of unloading your emotional grievances onto a person who did not solicit that type of communicating.” Now, what kind of work do you do as a therapist? If your answer is to be a professional who one can unload emotional grievances as an agreement between therapist and patient, you would be 100% correct! Can you see where the problem is here?

If you’re going to be a therapist, you need to be able to handle a lot of emotional baggage. Because it’s literally your job. A therapist is supposed to help people deal with trauma in a healthy way and find new ways to cope with any aftermath of said trauma. There’s going to be a lot of different patients you deal with as a therapist. Some people just need someone to talk to to relieve stress and anxiety, some will need help coping with years of mental/emotional trauma. Some will be adults, some will be children. Some will be verbal, some will not. Some are good at identifying their emotions, and some will not. You cannot be a therapist and not be prepared for a worst case scenario. If you’re going into therapy work to just chat with mentally well clients, then you have a wildly inaccurate idea of what therapists actually do.

If you are not mentally prepared to deal with a stranger’s emotional trauma, you should not go into a field that requires such a thing. It’s good to know what your limits are. But for the love of GOD, do NOT blame your client for “trauma dumping” on you when it’s LITERALLY YOUR FUCKING JOB.

Also, I’m pretty sure this person also technically broke patient/doctor confidentiality, since you’re not supposed to talk about a patient unless you are given express permission or you fear that they’re in a dangerous mental state.

So yeah that’s the opinion of a therapy student.

And this right here is why therapists like her are a fucking problem.

The majority of therapists out there want to help you! I’m studying to become a therapist and I want to help people! I’ve seen some fucked up shit, been through some fucked up shit, and heard some fucked up shit! And I want to help people deal with their own fucked up shit! Hearing about past trauma really doesn’t bother me that much!

If I had to take a wild guess, the only reason that this woman became a therapist was probably to make money. For some weird reason people seem to think that every single medical professional out there gets paid hundreds of dollars a month. And that’s just not true. I’m working as a nurse tech right now, and I’m getting paid $10 an hour.

There’s an overall group of messages you can pull from this story:

Do research into your therapists before you choose them. Look up their name, find past/present patients and ask about their experience, do what you can to make sure you have a GOOD therapist!

Don’t go into a medical/mental health job for money. It doesn’t work like that.

For the love of god, STOP TALKING ABOUT YOUR PATIENTS ONLINE. THATS NOT ALLOWED. STAHPZA.
