SERVICE DOG PSA

So today I tripped. Fell flat on my face, it was awful but ultimately harmless. My service dog, however, is trained to go get an adult if I have a seizure, and he assumed this was a seizure (were training him to do more to care for me, but we didn’t learn I had epilepsy until a year after we got him)

I went after him after I had dusten off my jeans and my ego, and I found him trying to get the attention of a very annoyed woman. She was swatting him away and telling him to go away. So I feel like I need to make this heads up

If a service dog without a person approaches you, it means the person is down and in need of help

Don’t get scared, don’t get annoyed, follow the dog! If it had been an emergency situation, I could have vomited and choked, I could have hit my head, I could have had so many things happen to me. We’re going to update his training so if the first person doesn’t cooperate, he moves on, but seriously guys. If what’s-his-face could understand that lassie wanted him to go to the well, you can figure out that a dog in a vest proclaiming it a service dog wants you to follow him

This is an old post that’s started making rounds again, so just as a refresher:

THIS POST IS FAKE. A SERVICE DOG WILL NEVER LEAVE ITS PERSON IN AN EMERGENCY. THEY DO NOT “GO FIND HELP,” THEY SUMMON HELP TO THEM BY BARKING.

OP was a novice pretending to be a dog trainer, claiming to be training service animals. They weren’t. They were a pet owner deluded into thinking all dogs can become service dogs and all owners can train them to become one.

In a world where anyone can buy a service vest online and walk their untrained dog in public spaces, no actual service animal trainer will ever train a dog to walk away from their person and approach strangers. That can literally, realistically get the person killed, and/or an extremely expensive dog stolen while the owner is incapacitated.

Snopes also says it’s not a hoax–not every service dog gets this training, but some do depending on the disability the dog is helping with.

So, have any sources on that “this is a hoax”?

While OP may be fake the advice in general is relatively sound. If you see a service dog without an owner it is safe to assume something very bad has happened, even more so since they are trained to stay with their owners. I’d rather investigate and find out it’s someone irresponsible who put a vest on their untrained dog than ignore it and possibly leave someone who needs help alone where even their dog can’t get to them. So like yeah if a service dog comes up to me I’m following it.

Please have a moment of silence for the people who were killed instead of freed when news of emancipation finally reached the furthest corners of the american south.

have another moment for the ledgers, catalogs, and records that were burned and the homes that were destroyed to hide the presence of very much alive and still enslaved people on dozens of plantations and homesteads across the south for decades after emancipation.

and have a third moment for those who were hunted and killed while fleeing the south to find safety across the border, overseas, in the north and to the west.

black people. light a candle, write a note to those who have passed telling them what you have achieved in spite of the racist and intolerant conditions of this world, feel the warmth of the flame under your hand, say a prayer of rememberance if you are religious, place the note under the candle, and then blow it out.

if you have children, sit them down and tell them anything you know about the life of oldest black person you've ever met. it doesn't have to be your own family. tell them what you know about what life was like for us in the days, years, decades after emancipation. if you don't know much, look it up and learn about it together.
