The MET Gala is a fundraiser for The Met. Putting on the fashion exhibition is VERY costly. Has the politics, inflation, and bullshit gotten out of hand? Yeah. To give you an idea of how much this can cost, the collection I work for has 2 gowns from 1798 & 1809 currently being conserved and had mounts made for them so displaying them wouldn’t cause further damage. They were already in a solid B shape and cost more than 50k to conserve so the public can view them for 5 months each. They will then be reboxed (archival tissue and box) for a minimum of 10 years before they’re considered to be seen again. Oh, and archival material only lasts 10 years before it has to be replaced, whether or not it’s being considered for display.

Don’t like the gala? Support local museums with a textile or fashion collection, they get fractions of the revenue or publicity, and still aim to achieve a solid fraction of what the MET does. More collections are deaccessioning their textiles because they’re costly to maintain, large and need space. However, after big names artists like Van Gogh, Botticelli or da Vinci they get the most interest in from the public. The study of clothing is an opportunity to shine light on women & minority stories as well. Don’t let the fact that some of the guests suck and have more money than any of them need take away the importance of museums and dress study.

oh, okay. i see. you think rpf has nothing to do with you. you go on the internet and say heated rivalry rpf is immoral and invasive because you’re trying to tell the world that you care too much about these actors to read fic about them, but what you don’t know is that the rpf is not just a byproduct of their good chemistry, it's not just parasociality, it’s actually the only next logical step.

you’re also blithely unaware of the fact that, in 2011, hbo produced a documentary series about the washington capitals vs pittsburgh penguins stadium series, and then i think it was on livejournal, wasn't it, that sidney crosby/alexander ovechkin hockey rpf began to really circulate widely. and then sid/ovi rpf quickly showed up in the collection of several prolific fanfic writers. then it filtered down through tumblr and ao3 and then trickled on down to miss rachel reid herself, who no doubt was the first to be brave enough to send it to print

however, heated rivalry represents millions of works by countless hockey rpfers, and it’s sort of comical how you think that you’ve made a choice that exempts you from rpf when, in fact, you’re watching a tv show that was selected for you by the same rpfers you're condemning... from a pile of "stuff"

the thing about hollanov + miscommunication is that no one is doing it like them

it's two characters who have different communication habits learning to understand each other over the course of literal years. it's two characters plagued by different but very understandable fears and holdups who consistently lie to themselves and to each other over the course literal years. it's so juicy and well-executed.

what it's NOT is what I think a lot of people have come to expect from "miscommunication," which is usually just...characters simply not talking to each other, or characters failing to understand a very basic misunderstanding that have could been resolved by someone simply asking a direct question lmao

and because of that, it makes what hollanov have going on genuinely interesting to read/watch, and not frustrating in the same way I think a lot of "miscommunication" can feel. I mean it's still frustrating to watch them suffer for so long, but we aren't just watching two characters be woefully obtuse for the sake of the plot, we're watching them genuinely struggle to understand one another while also concealing their own feelings for reasons that are both understandable and well-established!!! it's frustrating in the way it's SUPPOSED TO BE!!

unfortunately, it also means that in order to understand their behaviours, you have to be willing to read them as the flawed characters they are, and understand that they both are at fault for how long it takes them to reach a level of healthy, open communication with each other. and unfortunately, that is a lot harder for some people than just being able to assign one character as "bad at talking" and therefore "the problematic one."

THIS is the way!! it has been my experience that authors very often do not like to read the same things they like to write, and vice versa. sometimes they will even read completely different pairings and fandoms than they write!!

going through author bookmarks may or may not yield good results; going through the bookmarks of fellow commenters almost always will!
