Matthew Dickman, "Love"
We fall in love at weddings and auctions, over glasses of wine in Italian restaurants where plastic grapes hang on the lattice, our bodies throb in the checkout line, the bus stop, at basketball games and we can’t keep our hands off each other until we can— so we turn to rubber masks and handcuffs, falling in love again. We go to movies and sit in the air conditioned dark with strangers who are in love with heroes like Peter Parker who loves a girl he can’t have because he loves saving the world in red and blue tights more than he would love to have her ankles wrapped around his waist or his tongue between her legs. While we watch films in which famous people play famous people who experience pain, the boy who sold us popcorn loves the girl who sold us our tickets and stares at the runs in her stockings every night, even though she is in love with the skinny kid who sold her cigarettes at the 7-11, and if the world had any compassion it would let the two of them pass a Marlboro Light back and forth until their fingers eventually touched, their mouths sucking and blowing. If the world knew how the light bulb loved the socket then we would all be better off. We could all dive head first into the sticky parts. We could make sweat a religion and praise the holiness of smelliness. I am going to stop here, on this dark night, on this country road, where country songs come from, and kiss her, this woman, below the trees which are below the stars, which are below desire. There is a music to it, I hear it. Johnny Rotten, Biggie Smalls, Johann Sebastian Bach, I don’t care what they say— I loved you the way my mouth loves teeth, the way a boy I know would risk it all for a purple dinosaur, who, truth be known, loved him. In the Midwest, fields of corn are in love with a scarecrow, his potato-sack head and straw body, hanging out among the dog-eared stalks like a farm-Christ full of love. Turning on the radio I hear how AM loves FM the way my mother loved Elvis whose hips all young girls loved, sitting around the television in a poodle skirt and bobby socks. He LOVED ME TENDER so much that I was born after a long night of Black-Russians and Canasta while “Jailhouse Rock” rocked. Stamps love envelopes, the licking proves it— just look at my dog who obviously loves himself with an intensity no human being could sustain, though you can’t say we don’t try. In High school I once cruised a MacDonald’s drive-thru butt-naked on a dare from a beautiful Sophomore, only to be swallowed up by a grief born from super-size or no super-size. Years later I met a woman named Heavy Metal Goddess at a party where she brought her husband, leading him through the dance floor by a leash, while in Texas cockroaches love with such abandon that they wear their skeletons on the outside. Once a baby lizard loved me so completely, he moved into my apartment and died of hunger. No one loves war, but I know a man who loves tanks so much he wishes he had one to pick up the groceries, drive his wife to work, drop his daughter off at school with her Little Mermaid lunch box, a note hidden inside next to the apple, folded with a love that can be translated into any language: I HOPE YOU DO NOT SUFFER.
My opinion on the 'would modern au Harrow be goth or Catholic' debate is that she would be both and it would throw everyone off. She goes equally hard on both of those things and no one knows what to do about it.
@cat-lady-in-space Omg these tags 😂
Harrow has no friends so she treats confessional like she's venting with her besties.
The priest secretly hates her because she comes up to him after every mass with intense questions about the philosophical implications of the most obscure bits of scripture that he can't even fully remember. She tries to not be insubordinate but can't quite keep the condescension out of her tone.
When Gideon's been hanging around for long enough she starts venting to her about what an idiot the priest is that he can't even answer these simple questions.
Gideon suggests that she should just lead her own services if she knows so much more and Harrow, completely horrified, hisses at her "Don't you know that would get me excommunicated??" and storms off to her room for the rest of the day to perform some sort of weird penance ritual she made up for herself.
After 20 minutes Gideon realizes she's not coming back out and leaves.
So this gets at something that doesn’t often get discussed in the Locked Tomb fandom: imo, the Ninth House is very much inspired by/a statement about Marianism in the Catholic tradition. See, officially the Catholic Church generally accepts and encourages the veneration of Mary, above and beyond that of other saints. However, it’s always been quite leery about this veneration shading over into the territory of “Mariolatry” (worship of Mary as a goddess), especially in the historical heresies of Collyridianism, and in general giving women too many ideas. (Notably, a lot of Protestant theologians were not happy with Catholic Marianism, seeing it as idolatry.)
This brings us to Harrow and the Ninth. The Ninth in general is highly Marian-coded; they’re not considered heretical by anyone but the Eighth, they don’t think of themselves as heretical, as far as they’re concerned, they are a devout monastic society living in obedient service to a divine commandment. But Harrow is a heretic: she did the forbidden thing her family was charged to make sure was never done, and she has already transferred not just her veneration but her adoration to the Body by the time the series begins. She is, in this analogy, a Collyridianist.
And then Nona the Ninth comes around, and she goes a step further:
“I want to understand why she was angry—I want to understand the mathematics, now that I have seen them for myself. I want to know how many of the Resurrection are left, and how many you began with, and what the discrepancies are. I want to know where you put them. They didn’t go into the River. I want to know why she was angry … and why you were terrified.”
She looked away from him, and she said: “I want to journey to find God. Maybe, at the end of that road, I will find God in you, Teacher … the God who became man and the man who became God. Or, perhaps, the child of the Nine Houses will recognise a different divine. But I am the Reverend Daughter—I am the Reverend Mother, the Reverend Father—I must find God, or some aspect of God, and understand it for myself … even if she lies, right now, within the Tomb.”
Harrow’s conclusion is that John is probably not God, but that Alecto probably is, which is just the kind of thing that the early Church was worried about when they said Collyridianism was a form of Ishtar-worship.

I have never seen this post before but tumblr already said I liked it. And I do like it
These drawings have such a joyful energy, like illustrations from a children's book.
what are you guys’ most “tumblr is a website” moments
off to a great start everyone
i’ve been reading the tags all day i truly cannot pick a favorite so here’s more
being a self-taught artist with no formal training is having done art seriously since you were a young teenager and only finding out that you’re supposed to do warm up sketches every time you’re about to work on serious art when you’re fuckin twenty-five
someone: oh yeah, do this exercise during your warm ups! it’ll help
me: my what
What’s up I have an actual college degree in art and I was never ONCE taught to do warm ups.
when i was in undergrad, it was kind of mentioned in and offhand way that we should do warmups, but we were never shown what that meant. And, y’know, we were young so it didn’t matter so much.
Being older now and having an art job it’s…kind of essential.
So: a quick primer for those of you who are like ‘ok but how do i actually go about doing this warmup thing.’
1) you may be tempted to do ‘a warmup drawing’ which is just a drawing that will take longer than it needed to and probably be frustrating and kind of bad because you didn’t warm up first. It’s tempting but always a trick your brain is playing on you! Do not trust!
2) warmups will vary based on what feels good to you/what task you’re about to do/what motor skills you want to practice. That being said, some good standbys:
a) circles. Just a whole page of circles on whatever drawing surface you’re going to be using, whether that’s your tablet or your sketchbook or a drawing pad on an easel. For these circles you should make sure that you’re drawing from your shoulder and not your wrist. In fact, you want to be drawing from your shoulder rather than your wrist most of the time! forever! your wrist is delicate please preserve it!
In order to ensure that you’re drawing from your shoulder, when you’re holding your pencil or whatever drawing tool you’re using, the only part of your hand that should be touching the drawing surface is part of the last two fingers–some people prefer the finger tips, but I tend to favor the first knuckles. Either way, the fingers should really be ghosting over the surface, providing guidance rather than support.
I usually start with big circles and then go to smaller circles and lines of ellipses, and then try to fit circles and ellipses inside other shapes i’ve already drawn as a precision exercise, but i don’t do that unless i’m feeling loose
b) spirals! i don’t always do spirals, but if i’m stiff and the circles just aren’t cutting it, spirals are a good fall back. I start from the center and work outward, going both clockwise and counterclockwise until i feel comfortable with the whole range of motion. Some people really care about getting perfect spirals but for me it’s all about making sure i’m comfortable with how i’m moving so who really even cares about how the spirals look. Not me!
c) lines! straight lines! in parallel! i do a mix of vertical, horizontal, and diagonal. These are often more from the elbow than the shoulder, especially if I’m working on a smaller surface. For this exercise, I recommend holding the drawing tool perpendicular with the surface
d) connect the dots. This is a precision and accuracy exercise and takes two forms. The first is to draw two dots and then draw a straight line between them. The second is to draw three dots and draw the curve that connects them. This sounds a lot simpler than it is in practice. Take time to ghost over the line you plan to draw before actually committing to your line. (I don’t always remember where I picked up my warm up exercises, but I’m pretty sure I got this one from Scott Robertson. His how to draw and how to render books are very technical but also accessible and worth checking out)
e) cubes, spheres, cones, and cylinders. These help get your brain into a more volumetric space. I draw multiples of each, rotating the forms around, and I’ll often take the time to do some rough shading on at least a few of them
f) spidermans! This one is really good if you’re going to be storyboarding or working on dynamic poses. Just fill a page full of spidermans doing all sorts of acrobatics.
g) beans. I don’t do beans too much anymore, but I know a lot of people like it so I’m mentioning it here. Fill an area with different size bean shapes without lifting your pencil off the paper.
h) short medium and long line repetition. draw a short, medium, and long line on your page, and then draw directly on top of them 8 to 12 times, doing your best to exactly trace what you’ve already drawing. Repeat with a wavy line. I’m bad at this one, which means I probably need to do it more.
And there are lots more options too! Hit up youtube to see what other people recommend, put together your own go-to list, mix it up when you’re getting bored, etc.
This is a long list, I know, but I usually don’t take more than 10 to 15 minutes to warm up, and I can warm up one handed while I’m drinking coffee, so, multitasking hurrah.
Sometimes I’ll advance to a precision warmup and find that I haven’t loosened up enough yet; it’s totally ok to go back to an earlier exercise! Also, all of this has the added benefit of kind of ritualistically getting you into the drawing mode so even if I’m not feeling it before I start, by the time I’ve gotten to the end I’m usually Ready For Drawin’. Brain hacks.
so, yeah! that’s a lot of words, but! Warmups are important! Save your joints, take less advil, do better drawings!
How on earth are you supposed to draw from a sholder? might as well tell me to draw from the foot. It makes no sense

Reblogging to save a wrist
Hi I have a literal animation degree and I learned fucking ✨none✨ of this
So what I’m hearing is…circles. Circles everywhere.
cats being capable of understanding accidents and even giving you a little head bonk to let you know you're still cool makes it infinitely funnier that they don't understand when you're trying to help them
cats when you step on their tail: i'll admit that was rather ouchie, but given the lifetime of goodwill and trust between us, one must conclude this booboo is but a fluke.
cats when you try to get their claws unstuck from the couch covering: this nefarious bitch has never had a single honorable intention in their dishonest and shameful life, this must be one of their sinister plots or perhaps even an attempt on my life,
They should invent an essay where you just do research forever and then you never write anything
seeing strange fetishes im not into on my dash is like observing an edible herb on a walk. Hmm. someone wise ☝ could make use of this... but i shan't 👴
you paint such a beautiful picture with your words anon thank you
mae gweld ffetisiau sydd ddim yn fy niddori ar fy dashfwrdd fel sylwi ar berlysieuyn bwytadwy wrth fynd am dro. Hmm. gallai rhywun doeth ☝️ gael defnydd allan o hwn... ond na wnaf 👴
hmmm. yes, I like your gimmick. and not just because of my welsh fetish.
i love six o clock because the clock looks so stupid. "|" like get real
Tumblr constantly has gems like this where someone says something seemingly inane but it’s actually a thought we’ve all had at some point in our lives
why is it so comforting to know that even in 40/50s lesbians will always have the most unhinged lesbian drama

The next time you've got a friend over, set an example and put your phone on the table, visibly there but not too far away, to let them know that you're intentionally present, not distracted, your attention is undivided and you want to be fully focused on being right there to spend time with them. Don't mention it or draw attention to this, you're not doing this to be preachy or wanting praise, you just want to be a good friend and you value your friend's time. Ideally, your friend will either notice this or even pick it up without conscious notice, and set their own phone aside on the table as well.
Then, when your friend takes a minute to go to the bathroom, grab your phone and take a photo of your friend's phone sitting on your table. Do not touch it, and put your own phone back exactly where it was immediately once you've got the picture. Carry on with whatever you two were doing.
Once your time is up and your friend has left for home, wait for a good 15 minutes or so, for them to either get back home or be well on their way there. Text your friend, "hey, you forgot your phone", and send them the photo you took of their phone on your table. Set a stopwatch running from the moment your friend sees the message.
Measure how many seconds it takes for your friend to process this and tell you to go fuck yourself.
