I used to be a huge fan of dropout so this one really hurt. But the evidence kept piling up, like the aforementioned support of JVP, Brian David Gilbert accidentally retweeting a neonazi because he agreed with him on Palestine, and also the fact that their discord (which I believe has since been shut down) had a huge section dedicated to rancid i/p discourse. And I just couldn’t continue to support them or consume their content.

@samreich, maybe you would like to chime in and give us your opinion on your employees and collaborators supporting an organisation that glorifies terrorists? There’s no nuance to this - the PFLP is considered a terrorist group by the US government. You can disagree with that on moral grounds, but the law is pretty clear. I understand your position so I don’t expect you to reply, but maybe this will give you pause.

This also gets increasingly concerning with the growing overlap between DropOut and Vlogbrothers* & associated ventures (SciShow, Study Hall).

I have no reason to believe Hank Green personally knows about or agrees with JVP’s extreme pro-terror sympathies, or to distrust the sincerity of the Green brothers’ previous statements on the conflict—which, while often leaning in favor of Palestinian narratives over Israeli ones, have tended to be fairly mild & balanced in ways that do not in any way suggest the possibility for support of the terror ideology held by organizations like Hamas or PFLP.

However, the fact that Hank Green is colleagues with, and by all appearances personal friends with, members of an organization that does, and that they have been integrating into each other’s business ventures and repeatedly featuring each other in their respective projects over the past year or so, is concerning.

Especially when you consider that SciShow isn’t just entertainment that people watch in their freetime like Dimension20 or Game Changers; it’s a really helpful educational resource that teachers commonly use as supplemental material in high schools.

Because of this, there is a high likelihood that teachers will be introducing their students to Brennan Lee Mulligan—who has involved himself in an organization that promotes the literature & ideology of a terrorist organization—in, of all places, their Science classrooms. And while it’s unlikely that Mulligan will ever say anything truly worrisome in a SciShow video, a fair number of students will become followers and fans of his through SciShow (as has been the case for Hank & SciShow guests in the past), or through Hank directing them to DropOut to see his standup routine & other guest appearances, and then be directed through Brennan, or Ally, or whoever, to JVP & other extreme organizations.

I do not know what’s in the minds or hearts of anyone involved here, but what I am seeing is this:

an officially designated terrorist organization (PFLP) that helped Hamas carry out the largest mass-slaughter of Jews since the Holocaust, and is still holding Jewish children hostage,

being held up as a “Revolutionary” template for “liberatory struggle” by the specific chapter (JVP LA) that multiple members of DropOut (Brennan, Izzy, Ally, possibly more) have promoted, shared propaganda from, and/or published photographic evidence of involvement in,

and Hank Green becoming increasingly involved with DropOut, including promoting & featuring the specific individuals involved in the PFLP-curious JVP LA

What I am seeing is a pipeline being built, little different than the alt-right pipeline (perhaps even less diffuse), which—regardless of the intentions or knowledge of all its participants—is funneling people towards the ideology of an officially designated terrorist organization involved in the worst massacre against the Jewish people since the Holocaust. That concerns me.

It should concern you, too.

Every time I see Dropout trending on tumblr, I will NEVER FORGET the time that they released a statement affirming their anti-Zionism when their Jewish members were accused of being Zionist. How Dropout never apologized, never disavowed the claim, never spoke out against why only their Jewish employees were targeted. And everyone but the Jewish community applauded them for their righteousness and could gladly feel virtuous about consuming Dropout content. I’ll never ever forget this. This isn’t in isolation. This is just a perfect microcosm of the world.

Bad news :/ Bava Kamma 21b:12 says the following:

The Sages taught in a baraita: If a dog or a goat jumped from below to something that was above them and thereby caused damage, their owners are exempt, as this is atypical behavior. So we learn here that jumping from low to high (such as when making a layup or slam-dunk) is considered atypical behavior for a dog. Such behavior can't be reasonably anticipated, and any damage it may incur (such as points scored against an opposing team) is considered merely accidental. I believe this would in fact invalidate Air-Bud's baskets. Now if they got a chicken to play basketball...

Therapy is risky because sometimes they'll just ask you their standard "why can't you, though", and you think you're making some good point by saying something like "well if I don't do anything with my life then what's the point of being alive in the first place" and your therapist gets that look on their face and you immediately realise that your dumb ass just got caught, pinned to the ground with your stupid-ass neck between the spikes of a pitchfork, and you are not going to wiggle out of there before you two unpack what the fuck you just said.

As a former psychiatric nurse, I am here to tell you in utter seriousness that OUR ENTIRE DAMN JOB is to listen carefully enough to you that we can feed you the lines that will get you to this place: where you HEAR the thing that just actually fell out of your face while you were so busy trying to hold your act in place that you couldn't keep it from doing that.

The human mind—that exquisitely complex thing—is ALL about maintaining its current smooth operational status. EVEN when that status is wildly dysfunctional and/or destructive. I mean, the brain says, hardly ever hearing its own desperation, everything's working pretty well right now, isn't it? And it can't hear the (internal laugh track) audience's painful response.

Our job is to startle you into hearing the internal laugh track: and yeah, the pain. There is no other way to get out of the pain than to acknowledge that you're in it, and at least to begin acknowledging the sources of it.

...All those light bulb jokes? About really having to want to change? They're bullshit. Believe me when I tell you that no one really wants to change. The one thing everyone I ever worked with in therapy wanted was to to stay just the way they were... just (somehow, magically) less uncomfortable. And surprise!—that's not how getting better works.

Meanwhile: this is one reason I'm lucky as a writer... because having helped actual human beings walk through this process is one of the best possible forms of preparation for walking fictional characters through it.

And if having done it with real people sometimes makes it come across in the fiction as perilously close to comedy in the timing of how it unfolds? Well, sometimes it comes across that way with the real people too. And the laughter associated with your client realizing who the joke's been on may sometimes be painful, but (when it's genuine) has a uniquely joyous sound through the pain that can't be matched by any other human experience. It's a privilege to be part of that when it happens.

All you can do is keep feeding the person you're working the straight lines they've been telling you they need... and then wait for them to give up and bite.

And here is the most devastating fact of Frank's posthumous success, which leaves her real experience forever hidden: we know what she would have said, because other people have said it, and we don't want to hear it.

The line most often quoted from Frank's diary are her famous words, "I still believe, in spite of everything, that people are truly good at heart." These words are "inspiring," by which we mean that they flatter us. They make us feel forgiven for those lapses of our civilization that allow for piles of murdered girls—and if those words came from a murdered girl, well, then, we must be absolved, because they must be true. That gift of grace and absolution from a murdered Jew (exactly the gift that lies at the heart of Christianity) is what millions of people are so eager to find in Frank's hiding place, in her writings, in her "legacy." It is far more gratifying to believe that an innocent dead girl has offered us grace than to recognize the obvious: Frank wrote about people being "truly good at heart" before meeting people who weren't. Three weeks after writing those words, she met people who weren't.

Here's how much some people dislike living Jews: they murdered 6 million of them. This fact bears repeating, as it does not come up at all in Anne Frank's writings. Readers of her diary are aware that the author was murdered in a genocide, but this does not mean that her diary is a work about genocide. If it were, it is unlikely that it would have been anywhere near as universally embraced.

We know this, because there is no shortage of writings from victims and survivors who chronicled this fact in vivid detail, and none of those documents have achieved anything like Frank's diary's fame. Those that have come close have only done so by observing those same rules of hiding, the ones that insist on polite victims who don't insult their persecutors The work that came closest to achieving Frank's international fame might be Elie Wiesel's Night, a memoir that could be thought of as a continuation of Frank's diary, recounting the tortures of a fifteen-year-old imprisoned in Auschwitz. As the scholar Naomi Seidman has discussed, Wiesel first published his memoir in Yiddish, under the title And the World Was Silent. The Yiddish book told the same story told in Night, but it exploded with rage against his family's murderers and, as the title implies, the entire world whose indifference (or active hatred) made those murders possible. With the help of the French Catholic Nobel laureate François Mauriac, Wiesel later published a French version under the new title La Nuit—a work that repositioned the young survivor's rage into theological angst. After all, what reader would want to hear about how this society had failed, how he was guilty? Better to blame G[-]d. This approach earned Wiesel a Nobel Peace Prize, as well as, years later, selection for Oprah's Book Club, the American epitome of grace. It did not, however, make teenage girls read his book in Japan, the way they read Frank's. For that he would have had to hide much, much more.
