Summary:
“Stop lookin’ at me, Smitty,” Mack bitches.
Nevermind. “Not lookin’ at you,” Will mutters, squeezing his eyes tightly shut.
Will Smith has been watching Macklin Celebrini for a long, long time.
Macklin Celebrini has been looking back.
"
Alright,” says Dylan Tyrer in his blue quarterzip, “Now that you’re towards the end of this process, I mean, has it hit you yet that you’re going to be drafted by an NHL team, or do you think that’ll finally hit you when you’re actually on the stage in Nashville?”
“I think both, um, I think obviously being here and meeting with all the teams is, kind of puts it in reality, but when you’re sitting in that chair for the draft, it’s gonna really set in,” Will answers.
“Say it’s the Blue Jackets for you at number three overall, what are your emotions going to be, how excited are you gonna be, and what do you know about Columbus?”
It’s a good question, one Will has thought hard about and has no particular desire to recount. What would his emotions be? Going third overall would be unreal, he’d be ecstatic. It would make his mother happier if he slipped to fifth overall and ended up in Montreal, so the distance between them could be as small as possible. What does he know about Columbus? That Ohio seems dull and cold.
He’s rarely asked in these draft interviews about where he wants to go, and when he is, he lies and deflects with diplomacy.
But Will knows where he’d like to end up–– 3,131 miles away from Boston.
Somewhere warm, somewhere on the West Coast, somewhere where life will feel bright and clean, somewhere where the ocean stains the air salty. Somewhere Will Smith can make himself anew.
When Will dreams about life in the NHL, Will’s dreaming of San Jose.
