Taxes don't come with accolades or positive PR. Taxes don't get you a wing of a hospital named after you. Taxes don't let you let you host "fundraising" dinners where you can network with other obcenely rich people.

For a lot of these billionaires, donations are seen as a way to buy things without actually buying them. That's what happened with the Notre Dame fire. All those billionaires that said they were giving millions to fix it? Not a single one paid unless they could completely control Notre Dame. Philanthropy is just another form of acquisition for these people.

TLDR: Blizzard, the company that makes many games you’ve probably heard of such as World of Warcraft, Overwatch, and Hearthstone is largely owned by a Chinese company Tencent. Recently, a high-level Hearthstone player expressed support for the Hong Kong protesters on an official stream. Blizzard responded to this by banning him from official competition for a year, revoking his prize money from recent tournaments, and taking away his titles. Fans and people with conscious morality are not happy about this, hence the protests above.

This is really quite a big deal. A tremendous amount of modern research ends up being sold to journals which require unreasonable payments to access it and only pay the original authors a pittance. It’s nice to see an agency like NASA deliberately widebanding its findings.
