Why is it that every time I google something like "Are olives poisonous to cats" the top results are always like "Fun fact: Cats are carnivores! This means that they eat meat. I've been using the pet poison hotline's poison list cause it has a search function. It also tells you whether something is mildly, moderately, or severely toxic which can be very handy! It doesn't contain like everything but it might be a good place to start, it also includes plants for fellow houseplant lovers <3

This is literally what people are talking about when they say AI will be used to mainstream widely held bigotry. LLMs are trained on frequency and probability -> straight relationships are more well represented in the dataset -> straight pronouns and terms become the "correct" normal.

This is a form of backdoor bigotry from both normative facts (there are more straight than gay relationships) and well represented bigoted beliefs (men are superior to women).

Combine this with the mass of people inclined to believe (and being encouraged to believe) that if AI says and does something it must be correct

For all its faults Tumblr has truly ruined all other social media for me because my friends all have Instagram and are all trying to get me on Instagram more but every time I open Instagram there are like fifteen things screaming for my attention and when I get over myself long enough to start scrolling it's like. Where is my chronological dash. Where is the following-only option. Who are these people. Why are there so many videos. Everyone is screaming at me. And then before I know it I'm thirty minutes into scrolling and I haven't seen a single thing that I actually care about. At least on Tumblr when I see stuff I don't care about I know someone I follow has found a new interest.

There are no "exact color" of pride flags.

I see more and more sites and posts talking about the exact hex codes for the lesbian flag, or the right purple for the ace one, and how it should be more or less saturated and I just want to say: pride flags were meant to be sewn in your kitchen. To be spraypainted and to be recognised.

There are no "exact colors" of pride flags because you should do them with what you have ! Nobody should care if you use a crimson red instead of a cherry red or whatever ! Be free ! wave your colors ! The colors you have !

as in you'll never achieve the perfect daily routine, sleep schedule, coping mechanisms, mannerisms, fashion sense etc. even after years and years of healing and improvement and self-discovery. you will never be so good at life that you manage to utilize every waking moment. its great to be productive and all but sometimes you'll suck ass. sometimes you'll take eight hours to be done with a twenty minute job. you'll prioritize the wrong thing. you'll sleep for 12 hrs just to avoid being awake. you'll relapse. and you'll relapse again. you'll forget to turn in the assignment. you'll order too little food. life is far too large and complex for you to even experience it completely, much less try to make sense of and control it. you can't. please give up on that and be at peace with the hours you lose. they are not separate from your life.

fucks me up that by total coincidence the sun and moon's size difference is exactly matched to their difference in distance from us, thus making our beautiful total solar eclipses where you can see the silver threads of the sun's corona possible because the moon just covers the sun completely

The moon is also absolutely gargantuan by moon standards. It isn't the largest moon in the solar system, but it is BY FAR the largest in comparison with its planet. Ganymede is the largest satellite of Jupiter and the largest moon in the solar system. Its diameter is only about 3.8% of Jupiter's. Titan's radius is 4.4% of Saturn's. Callisto and Io are the next largest in the neighborhood, with 3.4% and 2.6% the diameter of Jupiter respectively.

Our moon is number 5. It is smaller in direct comparison to the above moons. The diameter of the moon is 3475 km. That is a full 27% of the diameter of the Earth. More than a quarter. That's ridiculous. It's unheard of. The universe is large enough that the word unique probably doesn't mean a lot, but this might be about as close as you get.

This has had a huge impact on our planet. Other things aliens might not have are significant tides. One of Mars's dumpy little potatoes wouldn't be able to move oceans the way our moon does.

Our moon has also stabilized our axis to a massive degree. Without her up there our axis would wobble all over the place and our climate would be far more chaotic. Aliens might not be quite so lucky.

I guess what I am really trying to say is that the moon is extremely cool. I like the moon.

Just want to add that the reason we have such a large moon is because a whole planet crashed into proto-Earth. Theia (the planet) and Earth got so superheated by this collision that their component cores fused and the impact jettisoned a lot of material into space. That massive amount of jettisoned material became our moon. So Earth and the moon have very similar composition. This does not seem to be a common method of lunar formation.

I got a serious beef with the Fermi paradox. There is no Fermi paradox. There stopped being a Fermi paradox once the first radio telescopes went up, and we began to get a true sense of the sheer scale of the universe.

Space is big, empty, and loud. Sunspots can cause enough interference to affect global communications. We’re not even loud enough to talk over our own sun. On our own planet. We can barely communicate with Voyager, and we know exactly where it is and what its signal sounds like.

The Fermi paradox is like doubting the existence of Belfast, because you stood on a windy New York beach shouting towards it and didn’t get an answer.

I have trouble telling when people are lying to me. So if they enjoy that kind of thing they’ll keep leading me on and laughing at me for being naive. Eventually, far too late, I catch on. But this is my hack: I don’t let on that I’ve caught on. I keep them going with their story, making them make up details until it is truly ridiculous. This is about the time they finally realize that I’ve turned the tables on them, and they are now looking silly for believing that I could possibly still be taken in by them.

I need to say something people don’t seem to want to hear.

Things are worse now than they were 25 years ago.

I was sixteen years old, freshly out of the closet, walking around holding hands with my girlfriend proudly, happily, utterly in love and at no point did I ever feel scared.

This was twelve years or so before same sex marriage was legalised and an apology was given by the queen for the criminalisation, harm and stigma brought upon our community. Equal rights seemed unthinkable to me at sixteen years old, and yet I never once felt a need to hide who I was or who I loved.

Today, I do.

The Pride flag I hang every June has been stolen and found burned in a nearby field. My neighbours don’t put my bin out when they take out everyone else’s, a deliberate choice of exclusion. A woman braked to a stop outside my house and asked me what I was doing there (I was very obviously cleaning my windows), and she looked shocked when I said I was the person who lived there, glared at me and drove away without explanation. I am the only female-shaped person who visits my local barbers, and although the staff there are friendly and welcoming, I see the coldness in the eyes of some of the other customers in the mirror, and I feel the need to explain my hair fell out due to cancer rather than that I actually quite like having short, masculine hair. Because I don’t feel safe.

I don’t feel safe.

Everywhere I look, I see Pride posts flooded with hateful comments, and it’s more than the ignorant basement dwellers I’ve dealt with all my life, these are deranged, radicalised individuals who believe their hatred is allowed because it is being given a platform. They are organised. They are finding each other. They are so full of rage and desperate to point it somewhere. At someone.

And I hate that I’ve been pushed into a state of fear and shame that I’ve never, in my twenty five years of being openly me, experienced.

It is bad out there. And I’m afraid it’s going to get worse.

I know my page, my whole thing, is mama bear hopecore, but I’m genuinely all out of hope. It’s so fucking hard to be hopeful in this charged political climate. So if you’re out there, and a part of you is afraid, I’m telling you that you are 100% right to be, that in twenty five years the most dangerous it has ever been is right now, and just staying alive and being yourself is all you need to focus on right now.

Take care of yourselves, and each other. And remember that you are loved, you are valid, you are worthy, you are enough, and if you needed to hear it today, I’m so fucking happy you’re here.
