"Love is love" also means "I don't need to get it to show up for you."

Our small town (I mean, probably a suburb, but it started as a small town, so screw that) pride parade is on it's, I think, third year? Maybe 4th? The parade is today, and we expect a solid, supportive turnout. We do have some push back from the local creepazoid cult churches.

But we also have a pretty active ally cohort. The crowd is probably 2/3rds queer and 1/3 allies, and the parade itself is probably similar. And we love that. We need our allies, both because they're often our loved ones, but also because we need folks at our back because of the aforementioned creepy cult churches.

How do you absorb health advice? Cos tbh I don't. This post isn't about dementia, it's about general health advice you've been given in life

Like, I have some things I do for health and some things I ignore and I don't know how I choose but I seem to. I eat too much, I eat sweet things a lot, I drink more than I should. But I also go to the gym a couple times a week and I've never smoked or done hard drugs. I don't hydrated like I should but I get enough sleep as much as possible.

I have changed things because of health advice. I eat red meat cos I have a bad time taking in iron, despite disliking red meat. I got a gym membership cos my incidental exercise went down with a job change and I noticed my body getting weaker. I don't go to the supermarket hungry to try and remove sweet snacks in the house. But I haven't cut out alcohol and I don't go on an hour long walk every day and I don't have a steady sleep schedule, despite these all being reasonable things I could do for my health.

Do you have any idea why some bits of health advice have an impact on people and others don't?

Can you remember a time you received health advice and it worked; you changed an action permanently?

How was that advice presented?

Can you imagine how health advice would need to be presented to you for you to change something you currently don't want to change?

For me, it ends up being a matter of where I learned it and if I was ready to learn it.

If I'm scrolling Tumblr to pass a little time while I'm waiting for something else, I'm not remembering Health Tip #72 regardless of presentation. Brain isn't ready to grab knowledge.

If I'm looking up answers for why I'm having X problem or a friend I'd having X problem, I'm probably going to remember the answer.

Even if I do casually absorb something when my brain is a broken clock that's right 2x a day and is ready while I'm idly scrolling, I'm more likely to remember if the advice is semi-immediately applicable and works the first time. I'm more likely to remember if it's something that directly affects me that I didn't know what a thing (like the migraine post that goes around talking about where to massage throat and jaw muscles, which I use frequently when I get a headache now).

As a writer, I'm also more likely to grab info if I think it could be useful in a story later. I'm at least more likely to save the info for reference later so I can find it easily.

I'm also more likely to remember something if it's really, really specific. "Exercise is good for you" leaves my brain immediately. No duh but I hate exercise. "Look at how easy this little stretch is and here's how it helps you!" Very specific, easy to do, something that probably has an immediate effect.

Shame also just literally doesn't work and adds to me avoiding the thing. Same with being told what to do "you should-" nope I'm out, don't tell me what to do.

Changes I've made? I take iron a few times a week after learning what the symptoms of anemia are (and realizing oh THAT'S what the problem is, and it was). I try to sleep on my left side after reading about the way the stomach sits making it less likely to cause acid reflux if you're laying on your left rather than your right. I took the doors off my cupboards after reading about someone's therapist talking to them about removing obstacles, and now it's cleaner in the house and I'm more likely to make a meal if I don't have to open a cupboard first. These were all just random Tumblr posts by people excited to share with others to help them.

I'll be honest, as someone that went to school for psychology and saw a therapist myself for a while, the secret is that people, myself included, have to want to change before they will. Someone not ready to change is really really unlikely to make a change. A better target rather than "what would get you to make a change you don't want to make" would be "what would make you want to change?" Wanting to change makes changing so so so much easier.

My dad is a psychotherapist--ABD psychologist. Many years ago, when I was just getting out of high school and he was, to be fair, still kind of a new therapist, I asked him to help me carry through on exercise goals. He said "If you wanted to exercise, you would exercise"

ok so, I approached my local library with a proposal to donate a mural as a way to A: build portfolio/gain practical experience and B: give back to a beloved public institution. The director was very enthusiastic about it and i've been working on it since the beginning of March. Come with me as I endeavor to paint what is in all honesty an excessive amount of birds

I wanted the birds to look like they were actually in the space so first thing after doing the draft was to do a lighting study

after that I covered the walls in letters in lieu of a projector/vr headset bc i have neither of those :) Then i take a picture of the section of wall and superimpose the lineart over top of it so I can pencil in the lines

et voila

and that was a whole week on it's own so next comes the paintin' >:)

the male and female ones are gonna be posted separately bc they're taking a lot longer lol but yea! super happy i was able to capture the iridescent green of the head, i found metallic green and blue paint at a craft store that really made his head POP. it looks better in person i promise

ALSO!! As this is the 10th one, BIG announcement. The end is in sight!!!!! I plan to finish within the next 3 weeks and there will be a small dedication ceremony/ unveiling happening at the library to commemorate its completion on the 16th of May. the 16th is looming in the distance so i'm trying to get thru these as quickly as i can so i can have as much time for the GBH as possible. i still need to do the names next to all of them so i've got about a week and a half to finish everything which is GREAT because i have adhd and nothing gets my ass in gear like a fuckin deadline, let me tell you

and NOW that they are complete, ITS GO TIME, in the next five days (library's closed for mother's day 😭😭) i need to have the GBH fully rendered, the names of the birds vectored, weeded, masked, applied to the wall, and then painted, plus additional cattails throughout. I may be able to get away with just getting the GBH done in time for the unveiling and then just have the names and cattails added later, but i'm gonna really try to get it all done in time. BUT, i have a plan. Part of why i take so long on these is because i really am just figuring it out as I do it lmao. there have been many a time where i am sitting on top of the ladder googling "how to paint birds" but I think if i take the time tomorro to do all that figuring out how to approach it beforehand, this will go a lot faster. I may also recruit some of my artist friends to help with the placing of the names... hrmm we'll see.

Anyways, shout out to the librarian who tracked down exactly the thing i needed so i could figure out where to place the highlights in my birds eyes, ur the real mvp

In total, the 480+ total hrs it took me to cover this wall pales in comparison to how long its expected to spend on there, hopefully imparting a sense of beauty and love for the natural world to the next generation and here's hoping i'm only getting started with these.

Gallus, why is everything brassica? I'm upset? How am I supposed to get a crop rotation going, in consideration of soil, climate and what this family actually eats, when everything, I can think of, is brassica? What were our ancestors thinking?

"Why are all crops Brassica?" is like asking "Why are all dogs wolves?": Because we found ONE very genetically manipulable species and pushed it into as many fun and exciting shapes as possible.

HOWEVER, Like how we also have Cats, Chickens, Horses, goats and Pigeons, we also have:

Nightshdes: Tomatoes, Potatoes, and every kind of pepper except black pepper. Like Brassicas, they need a lot of calcium, so you shouldn't put them in the same bed, and supplemmenting both beds with finely crushed eggshells will help.

Cucurbits: Summer and Winter Squashes, melons, cucumbers, Chayote, Pumpkins. Not as demanding about the calcium, do need the kind of sun that will literally Sunburn brassicas and nightshades to death.

Alliums: Garlic, Leek, Onion, Scallion. What are you doing if you don't have these???

Special shouthout here to CEREALS like Corn, Sogrhum, Wheat, oats and Barely, which *can* be grown in a backyard garden if you are insane.

BEANS: Look. There is some bean somewhere your family will like. Black beans, pinto beans, peas, lentils, chickpeas, and PEANUTS. There's also Carrots and parsnips, but they have weird sandy soil requirements so they require a similar level of dedication and research as cereals do.

And that's just vegetables! You also have "fruits" which for purposes of this post are "assorted sweet-tasting plant parts", including but not limited to:

Strawberries, blueberries, Raspberries, apples, pears, peaches, plums, currants, cranberries, and cherries all of which I've grown in my yard before.

You've also go HERBS, which are generally not related, but you can interweave them between larger crop plants to keep your biodiversity up and help prevent disease outbreaks by acting as physical barries between plants: Rosemary, Thyme, Dill, Sage, Parsley, BASIL, Savory, lemongrass, and Mint if you're nasty.

I have to believe there's a few things in each of these categories your family will eat. Look up the nutritional needs of each and you can probably swing a crop rotation schedule from there.

I've forgotten *my own birthday* before. There are several years of my life just straight up missing. In the past I've forgotten silly little frivolous things like NAMES OF LOVED ONES or WHERE MY HOUSE IS. But obviously none of that was important. Fucking awful, ableist thing to say.

Oh me, 100%. Reinforced by several shows where I love the fandom--the stories are my heart, the art is amazing, and the members of the fandom are lovely, but the show itself just doesn't do it for me. :D
