Okay I know this was mostly a joke but I just feel the need to point out - this didn't start out as being mean, it started - and largely continues - as the opposite.

For a long time, tumblr had tags and no other search function. You wanted to find a post that wasn't tagged, you had to go to Google and type in your query and add "site:tumblr.com" and hope for the best.

As it is now, that method is STILL better than our native search function most of the time, but the quality of tumblr's native search function isn't really what's important here, what's relevant is how they implemented it.

See, the search bar in the upper left corner of the site - you used to type in something there, and it would take you to posts tagged with whatever you searched. Then, one day, they quietly rolled out an update that instead brought you to a search page that pulled up nearly every post that even mentioned your search term.

This...did not mesh well with the site culture.

Because, see, we had an etiquette guideline - do not post your negativity in the public tags. Why? Because people go into the public tags to find content about things they LIKE. Posting hate in a public tag was basically seen as being a raging dramamongering pissbaby troll LOOKING to start a fight over petty nonsense.

So imagine, suddenly, you log in one day, and someone's sending you anons angry about you allegedly posting hate in the tags, when you have NEVER done so. You use what you THINK is the tag search function to prove it, and - what the hell? Your UNTAGGED post about how annoyed you are with your notp...is appearing there???

So people started censoring things like that. Usually not because we all think the thing we're complaining about is profane (though sometimes it does get a giggle to think of it as such), but to keep it from showing up when people are searching for what they love and to prevent pointless drama. To avoid looking like some asshole troll going onto a fan forum specifically for The Blorbo Show and making a thread entitled "THE BLORBO SHOW SUXXX AND YOU ALL SUCK FOR LIKING IT!!"

And now it's just part of our site culture, for both peacekeeping reasons and petty glee.

Also, we specifically advise other users to never censor a word like "rape" because you want people who have that term blacklisted to catch your post in their filters and have it blocked. The goal is to facilitate other users finding what they're searching for and avoiding what they're averse to. So on tumblr we also don't censor for the users!

the change in search @astraltrickster talks about is also part of "antiship" history. used to be, you could wank about something and then tag it "anti destiel"/"anti wincest" what have you. and then this truce got completely borked when non-tag search was introduced

now, your very polite tag that you used to make sure the shippers of that thing didn't see it was showing up DIRECTLY in their results for that ship. but there was a weird momentum to the practice, and by the time the whole VLD era happened, "anti [ship]" hadn't left parlance yet but it was also no longer a clean-cut polite concept

some thought it was still the right thing to tag ("why should i have to change how i've always done things just bc tumblr added a new feature? just blacklist the tag"), while others saw it as an aggro tag, meant to harrass shippers by showing up in their search ("you know blacklisting doesn't work on mobile, adjust to the new reality and stop clotting up our shipping space with hate")

in the end, the aggro interpretation became the new default intention and people who ONLY wanted to wank, not actually cause problems, began tagging c*nsored versions or using epithets for the ship

which, in turn led to its own huge tension between two cultures as a subgroup of fans interpreted the search-oriented censoring as being a way to mitigate triggers for people who were too delicate to ever see the ship name, leading "anti ship" nomenclature to lose its original meaning of just wanting to wank privately and instead become associated with "protecting" people from a ship and its shippers, who, therefore became understood as people/concepts that were outright dangerous to others, even though their actual shipping activity and preferences had remained the same

if they go through with this--and i can't remember a single time tumblr dot com course corrected in recent memory--i will genuinely be really really sad. one of my absolute favorite parts of this site was being able to look at the notes of a post and see the conversations it had sparked, see if someone had already raised a point i was planning to raise, see if the op had responded to a response i found interesting. this will massively hinder this from happening, while also making it much harder to use the notes of posts as blocklists (a basic proactive safety precaution to be a trans woman with any kind of following on here) and much easier to direct harassment at whomever one pleases

Yep, Tolkien's linguistic puns and translation jokes are legendary. Although it's not accurate to say the in-universe origin of the books is that an elf told the stories to Tolkien. Rather, Tolkien is translating them from a volume he found, written in Westron, called the Red Book of Westmarch. This contains Bilbo's book (The Hobbit), Frodo and Sam's additions to it, (LoTR), as well as Bilbo's translations of Elvish histories he encountered during his time in Rivendell (The Silmarillion). These were all in one volume and Tolkien himself made the editorial decision to publish them all separately. Even more fascinating, the Red Book is not even the original writings, which of course would have been lost by now to time and disintegration. It's actually a copy of the original, or probably a copy of a copy, multiple times removed. And it wasn't copied from the original, either, but from a copy that made it to Gondor where it was annotated and corrected. There's probably even more to its history that I'm forgetting, but yeah, even this kind of metatextual provenance was something Tolkien thought a lot about that very few writers even consider anymore. Which, of course, they're not obligated to; but the fact that Tolkien was even interested in that kind of thing just shows how above and beyond he went

My problem is that everything is too wonderful. I could read an old encyclopedia and laugh at outdated shit. I could hang out with my friends and have a great time. I could listen to any band. I could meet new people, I could reconnect with old friends. I could learn to paint in any style. I could look at birds and bugs and snow and art. But unfortunately, employment
