also (still talking about something that no one else cares about) it’s so beautiful and meaningful to me that ilya is the one who most longs for and pushes for queer solidarity. like he is the one who tells ryan price that his and shane’s camps are focused on teaching tolerance, he is the one who shows up to scott’s gay bar night, and he is the one who gets the centaurs to wear pride tape for troy during the whole pride game (instead of just for the mandated warm-up). and he longs so badly to come out to his team bc he wants them to know this side of him. like he is so explicitly a queer man who wants to be seen for that part of his identity and he is willing to go to bat for everyone else. which makes sense to me from a russia pov bc he really knows the political context of everything. and he wants that community so bad!! bad enough to always show up in support which is such a beautiful part of his story to me

As tumblr user thedisir it's so funny to me when people get pissy about analysis that portrays Merlin as a class traitor. Like what if he is? What if I like him nuanced? What if that made him complex? "What if it's a self fulfilling prophecy?" said tumblr user the disir. What if I liked it that way?

It's important to my personal understanding and enjoyment of Merlin as a character that he did many awful things and was directly complicit in many other things he allowed to happen under his nose. And that he did all this with an (arguably misplaced) strong conviction that the endgame he was working towards was worth these things. And also. Lowkey because he loved that awful king of his.

Does this justify all his transgressions?? Debatable. The prophecy of Albion only became true once Arthur died so it could be argued that Arthur was as much "part of the problem" as Morgana. The Disir is one of my favorite episodes because it also kind of proves that Merlin could just say the word and things would change. I think also that a part of him just didn't want to come clean about his magic as to not personally disappoint Arthur rather than with the greater good in mind. Also in The Disir specifically because he just doesn't want Arthur to be killed by Mordred regardless of whether that would liberate his people. At least that's my opinion. Like a lot of it was just that he sincerely loved Arthur and that kind of made him a bit more awful of a person. Which to my personal taste is such a delicious cause narratively speaking for doing morally reprehensible things. He was just obfuscated by his feelings. Overwhelmed by the many paths. Gaslit by Kilgharrah. Down bad for the potential he saw in Arthur's reign.

Infinite layers to the Merlin onion. It just makes me love him more as a character. If all that nuance is getting in the way of your enjoyment of Merlin I sincerely cannot relate.

Because I just saw a post bitching about this one, I want to add: this post is saying that you need to take accountability for the way you hurt other people, even if it happens because of a symptom of your disability/illness. It's also saying that using terms (especially acronyms) that aren't common knowledge isn't a helpful way to explain yourself. It is NOT saying that you need to let people walk all over you because "your disability isn't an excuse."

If you're diabetic, you don't have to eat the honey glazed ham that will send you into a coma (their example). But you also can't yell at the person offering it and accuse them of trying to kill you. You can just say "thanks, but my body can't handle that kind of sugar intake, so I'll pass"
