I was recently asked to repost some old fanart I did of KJ Charles’s characters from some of my favourite books.

This book bought me back to tumblr after ten years. This fanart is the only piece that felt like it captured the characters Will Darling and Kim Secretan perfectly. I love it so much!

Okay, let's go over this one more time for those who don't understand from a parent's point of view.

If you walk into someone else's house and catch them doing anything intimate, you leave immediately. Maybe send a text apologizing for the interruption, but definitely let the person whose privacy has been violated come to you.

You definitely do not stand there in someone else's kitchen and demand an explanation from them, regardless of who they are to you. It's literally none of your business, even if you are their parent.

There's so much discourse out there about how David should have stayed to talk to Shane. It pops up in every discussion of this scene.

But seriously, what possible good would it have done to stand there and put Shane on the spot? David would know when his presence is a help or a hindrance to his son, especially in a situation that would potentially (obviously) embarrass Shane.

Granted, Shane did have a little panic attack, but he had the space to collect himself with Ilya before going over to talking to his parents in his own time, when he was ready.

As a parent myself, this is so obvious. Respect your child's autonomy, free will, and privacy. Shane's parents think that he is the best person to walk this earth, and they respect him.

David did the right thing by leaving immediately. Convince me otherwise, if you dare.

Obsessed with the idea that Shane only had ONE special interest before Ilya came along, then fought against it mostly because it's a distraction from hockey.

Over time, he realized that Ilya pushes him to be a better athlete and that's when he starts to unlock his heart. Because hockey. So really, it's all the same special interest. Neat and tidy, just the way Shane likes it.

QUESTION:

Get these two into a room to discuss hockey. What happens? Are they friends or mortal enemies?

okay but for sure baby shane on his first hockey team got to play on the ice during an intermission at a centaurs game in the 90s. he scored a goal and did a cute little celebration jump (and immediately lost his balance and fell on his butt). harris pulls the clip from somewhere deep in the centaurs archive. he makes an insta post after shane's first game with the cens and includes the video with a caption about tonight being shane hollander's second ever centaurs goal.

ilya just barely manages to keep himself from sobbing in delight at the video.

every single day I think about how american black vultures are known for engaging in interspecific allopreening (preening between different species)

and they have a specific relationship with crested caracaras, in which the black vultures assist them by not only preening them after meals but also leading them to food in the first place— due to their superior sense of smell— while the caracaras assist the black vultures by acting as a warning signal in case of danger

and while this is more typical of black vultures, this is not common at all for any member of the falconidae family— it’s a special bond!

I love everything about this post. I love vultures. They are deeply misunderstood birds.

Some of my favorite facts:

The scientific name for the turkey vulture, Cathartes aura, translates directly to "cleansing breeze" or "purifying breeze". The Romans recognized them as nature's cleanup crew and a vital part of the ecosystem.

When you see vultures circling, they are not circling over something dead or something about to die. They are following warm updrafts, getting high enough in the sky that they can scent carrion miles away.

Vultures have the best sense of smell in the bird kingdom and other birds watch them to detect updrafts so that they can also use them.

The recording that Shane made of Cromwell confronting him and Ilya in The Long Game haunts me. It's never referred to again, like Chekhov's Gun which never goes off.

Maybe it will have a key role in the next book whenever Rachel finishes it.

I think we forget that at the end of the day, Heated Rivalry is a story about two boys falling in with each other as they grow up. They both learned how to love from the other. They learned who they are together. They're childhood sweethearts in the purest sense of the word. They're just boys with crushes.

In my headcanon, Shane knows how to speak Japanese because he did with his grandparents and his mother. One day, an international outlet decides to do a feature on the first Asian hockey star and interview Shane in front of the Centaur's rink... in Japanese. Ilya us standing behind Shane on camera and you can see the look of shock and envy on his face.
