Later on, Nova heard a knock at her door. She went over to go and answer, and wasn’t surprised at all to find Pomni there. “Hey… Do you wanna talk?” Pomni asked. Nova smiled wistfully at her. “I mean.. There’s not much to talk about… I just get it.. With the whole getting attached to them..” She sighed. “But, We had a moment that was like a goodbye, it was sweet… and I’m not gonna forget it..”
Pomni smiled at her words. “That's.. Great.. I’m glad you’re not.." Pomni awkwardly chuckled. “Well, not as affected as I was.” Nova smiled more at Pomni. “Thanks.. For checking on me… I’m just… a little bummed.” Pomni nodded in understanding. “Anything I can do to help?” Nova waved it off. “I just need some time alone…but really… it means a lot that you came here to check on me.” Pomni smiled warmly. “Yeah, of course.. Digital friends gotta stay together..” They both chuckled. Pomni looked at Nova. “I’ll get you for dinner..” Nova nodded and waved to Pomni as she walked away.
About an hour after, Nova was just reading when she heard her doorknob jiggle.
She looked to the door to see that it had opened. The purple bunny was leaning against the door frame with his big yellow smile as he looked at her. “Have you been moping about that knock off Jax this whole time?” She scoffed and went back to reading. Jax’s pupils went small and his smile turned into a frown.
He then came inside the room and closed the door. He turned and silently walked over to Nova sitting on her bed, still reading the book. Jax sighed and hesitantly spoke. “You are upset about him.” He said with such finality. Nova’s eyes widened as she looked up. She saw his frowning face, and her eyes diverted away from him as she looked down to her book.“A….a little bit..” she quietly said. Jax looked away from her, his breathing getting a little...faster.. He looked back at her with a bit of anger. “What happened?” he asked sternly. She looked at him in disbelief. “What do you mean?”
Jax laughs in disbelief as he gestures with his arms. “YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN. You took longer than everybody else to go through the portal so clearly something happened!” Jax smirked. He then started to tease her with a sarcastic silly voice. “What? Did he thank you for saving him? Did you sweep him up into your arms? Give you a thank you kiss or something?”
After saying the kiss part, Nova froze. Her digital cheeks gradually turned pink as she looked away from him.
Jax froze, teasing tone gone as he looked at Nova. Her reaction was like a big kick to the gut. “You..” he whispered. She still looked away from him. Jax bitterly laughed. “Of course… Of course you’d fall for a stupid NPC.. From the way you were going ga-ga over him, it shouldn’t surprise me.”
Nova stood up and made eye contact with Jax, an annoyed look on her face. His pupils dilated and he plastered on his fake smile. “What? Gonna beat me up after insulting your prince?” Nova stared at him in anger. Jax was still smiling. “Y’know that he’s not gonna come into the circus and replace me or anything, you might not even see that pathetic bunny boy ever again. All he is now is a few lines of code.” Nova’s jaw clenched… but then she paused.. She looked at Jax curiously, anger fading. “I….I never said anything about wanting him to replace you..” she said, voice softening by a fraction.
Jax chuckled. “Yeah well he can’t, who could replace someone like me?” Her mouth gaped as she looked at him in annoyance. “Oh my gosh, that's what this is all about? You think that I want Evil Jax to replace you?” Jax rolled his eyes. “Nobody could.”
Nova threw her hands up in exasperation. “Oh! Seriously?! Seriously Jax?! This is what you’re doing? Really?” Jax’s pupils shrunk as he frowned at her. “Doing what? I just came to see you and it turns out you’ve been moping about that fake bunny this whole time. You’re pathetic.”
Nova looked at Jax with anger. “Not as pathetic as the bunny in front of me who can’t even say what’s bothering him.” Jax glared at Nova as he got closer to her. “I’m not the pathetic one here.” She glared back. “Really? Because it sure seems like you are.” The pair glared at each other for a while, not saying anything.
Nova then broke the silence with an annoyed sigh. “I don’t want him to replace you Jax.” Jax blinked from his glare, then looked at her with a bit of confusion. “What?” Nova rolled her eyes. “You’re getting all uppity because you think I want him more than I want you.” Jax stiffened. Nova crossed her arms and raised an eyebrow at him. “ Tell me I’m wrong and I’ll accept that I’m ‘pathetic’ as you say.” “Seriously?!” he yelled.
“Yes.” She replied. Jax groaned. “You’re so dramatic.” Nova scoffed. “This coming from the drama king who broke into my room?” “Not a drama king.” Jax curtly replied. Nova waited for him to say anything else. To see if he would actually deny it.
Jax crossed his arms as his pupils dilated and his smile came back. “You’re so serious, can’t you take anything lightly? I mean you’re all locked in your room being sad over some nothing NPC.” She chuckled from the irony of the situation. “Yeah well, you’re getting all sad over me right now…” Jax stiffened. Then he scoffed and turned away. “I’m not the sad one here, I’m just telling you what’s real and what’s not..” Nova watched as Jax started to pace the room.
She sighed and sat back down on her bed. “Jax… come on…. This isn’t gonna affect us being friends… I care more about you than I do Evil Jax.” Jax said nothing. Nova continued. “I mean, he was sweet, but I know he’s not…. He is all code now..”
Jax stopped and looked at her, hearing the sadness in her tone. Nova looked at him, pupils small and frown back on his face. “I… look I care more about everyone in the circus than I do an NPC ..... Doesn't mean that I can’t get sad about it..”
Jax reached out to her, but he hesitated and pulled his hand back. Nova looked at him in concern. “You really think I would want someone to replace you?” He sighed and sat down next to her. “Seems like you were already doing that..” he mumbled. The pair sat there in silence. Looking down at the ground while the tension in the room relaxed.
Nova looked back at Jax. “Hey… I don’t want you to be replaced.. You’re my friend, even if you are a jerk.” Jax chuckled. “I’m a lovable jerk.” The two smiled at each other. “Guess you are.” Nova said. Jax lightly smiled, but then he frowned.
He sighed and rubbed the back of his neck with his gloved hand. Nova watched him, frowning herself once the mood changed. “You really kissed him?” Jax hesitantly asked under his breath. Nova blushed. “Yeah..” Jax stayed quiet as he just stared at whatever he could in her room. She silently watched Jax… and then it hit her.
“Oh my gosh you were jealous.” she said quietly as she covered her mouth in surprise.
Jax blushed and angrily looked at her. “ I was not jealous!” Nova dropped her hand and jaw as she looked at Jax in shock. “ WAIT A MINUTE.” she said loudly as she stood up. “HOLD THE DIGITAL PHONE.” She pointed at Jax. “YOU’RE SUCH A CLICHE!” Jax angrily stood up and towered over her, red face and all. “HOW AM I CLICHE?!” Her mouth was still gaping. “BECAUSE YOU GOT ALLLL JEALOUS WHEN YOU FOUND OUT I KISSED SOMEONE!!!” She gasped. “And now you’re doing that weird jealousy thing they do in tv shows! Confronting but not confronting but hiding your feelings…” Nova gasped once more.
Jax got up and slammed his fist on her bed to be intimidating.. But that didn’t work because of course it didn’t because a bed is literally made for cushioning. His face was red from anger and embarrassment. “SHUT UP! I’m not a tsundere and you’re wrong! So wrong!” Nova smiled at him. “And how do you know what a tsundere is?” Jax froze. Nova chuckled. “Wait until I tell Gangle that you watched anime~” She said in a playful voice.
Jax tackled Nova and the two started to playfight. “Don’t you dare!” Jax yelled as they rolled around on the floor. “I will!” she said as she laughed. Nova laughed and laughed, with Jax stopping and just looking down at her as she laid on the floor. She finished laughing and looked up at Jax. His face softened as he looked at her. Nova softly smiled at Jax. “So…. what happens now?” she softly asked.
Jax paused as he looked down at her. She raised her eyebrow in anticipation for what he would say and it made him blush. “Ugh, don’t look at me like that, all smug.” He said as he looked away from her. She chuckled. “Sorry not sorry ... .besides I’m not as cliche as you.” Jax playfully glared at her. “Oh yeah? How so?” he said in a disbelieving tone. She shrugged.
“Well for one thing… I don’t know how I feel about you yet..” Jax’s ears drooped as he frowned at her, looking at her with worry and disbelief. Nova patted his arm. “Not like that… I mean, I love you…but I've only loved you in that friend way... I mean I’ve… I met Evil Jax and kissed him, now here I am.. With you…. And I think I’m a bit confused.. Not that I’m not liking the idea of us maybe being something more…. eventually….."
Jax looked at her in contemplation. “Yeah, that all checks out..” Jax sighed as he stood up and reached out a hand for her to take. Nova took his hand and stood up. Jax then took his hands and put them in the pockets of his pink overalls. “So…. what now?” She shrugged and they both looked at each other. “Well…. I mean I’m not gonna get with you right now…” Jax deadpanned at her and Nova chuckled. “Okay come on, I literally kissed an NPC who was technically an evil version of you...”
Jax smirked. “Hey, that means you were a little bit attracted to me.” Nova rolled her eyes as she smiled. “Look who’s back to making jokes.” Jax smiled and leaned forward. “What? Can you blame me? I mean if you tongued my evil dopple-ganger that means I might have good odds.” Nova playfully pushed his arm as she laughed. “EW! I didn’t tongue him! It was a kiss! A nice kiss!”
Jax smiled at her. “Still means something~” he said in a playful voice. Nova smiled. “Yeah well… even if our friendship is leading to that, there won’t be any kissing today, my lips are all used up.” Jax smirked. “Dang, how much did you kiss my copy?” Nova blushed. “Just once on the cheek and lips!” “And I bet it’s just eating you inside that you haven’t done the same to me.” Jax smugly said. Nova laughed. Jax smiled sincerely at her reaction, glad to be the one making her laugh instead of his copy. When she finished laughing she smiled at Jax. He smiled back at her. “So… what's the plan now?” Jax asked smugly with a hint of curiosity.
A couple hours later, Pomni came to Nova’s door and knocked. “Hey Nova? Caine made dinner. I think it's a digital meatloaf today…” Pomni waited a moment but heard no response from inside. She knocked again. “Nova?” No response.
Pomni sighed. She tried the doorknob.. And found the door to be unlocked. Pomni gently opened the door to look inside and check on her friend…. And she was completely shocked by what was inside.
Jax, sitting next to Nova on her bed, completely asleep. One of his long rubbery purple arms wrapped around Nova’s digital shoulders as she slept. She was leaning against him, one side of her face leaning on his shoulder. His chin was on top of her head, cheek smushed against her. Pomni’s mouth gaped at the scene… but she gently closed the door again.
She blinked… then started to walk down the hall. I mean, she knew that Jax and Nova were friends, that he was close to her, but she'd never seen him do something so… sweet… especially with Nova. But after thinking of it for a while, Pomni lightly smiled to herself. "Hm, guess there's hope for him yet." she mumbled. Pomni kept walking down the hallway to go back to the dinnertable, leaving the two back in Nova’s room.
For now, nothing between the purple rabbit and the digital woman was set in stone, but, at least they’re enjoying a nice little moment…. together.
