Unusually tall thin home in Viet Nam built for an owner who’s passionate about gardening and wanted an airy and relaxing space after a tiring work day, with abundant green areas for her hobby.

Drawing from the owner’s love of gardening, screens with a leaf motif were added throughout the design of the house, with the first hint of it being the arched doors that greet visitors as they arrive.

The home is different, and so pretty. I like the rusty look that the metal has.

Stepping through to the interior, there’s a partial screen that acts as a divider between the living room and the dining area/kitchen.

On another floor, a small home office has been set up off the hallway, with the wall of the bedroom acting as a decorative accent wall.

In the bathrooms, the screen has been used as a backdrop for the vanity and as a way to highlight the doorway.

A light well that follows the stairs to the top of the house is a central accent that casts shadows throughout the home.

At the top of the house, there’s an outdoor space with an arched arbor, with plants that complement the leaf motif.

This just hit me. I’m so Southern my family has a matriarch and no one in the family knows for sure how old she is. We all also got into a heated debate about the existence of her glass eye (still not confirmed). She’s in her 90s- we think- beat cancer, outlived two husbands, had seven children and has outlived three of them, survived The Great Depression, and either her dad or her grandfather was a full blooded Cherokee Indian… possibly the tribe’s leader but no one really knows for sure.

She also once lit into my dad’s school bus driver, cussing him black and blue about how he treated the kids and didn’t realize she had a butcher’s knife in her hand until he RAN away. She didn’t have any more trouble out of him.

I had an eloquent reason but really what it boils down to is I think Mamaw is a cryptid. The running joke in the family is that Mamaw will be at the end of the world with the twinkies and the cockroaches.

I’m not sure it’s a joke anymore, I think it’s a premonition.

Two years ago one of my cousins wanted to bring her wife to thanksgiving and Joe was all “ew no way” and Mamaw stood her ass up and said “Who the hell do you think you are, saying who is and isn’t welcome in my house? This ain’t your house- you get out! I say who is welcome and YOU is not welcome. Now SCAT!” while slapping at him and then sat back down and asked my cousin if her wife ate catfish. Joe tried to come back in and she popped the tennis balls off her walker and threw them at him until he left

No matter how old Mamaw gets, her hair is still solid black. She still hasn’t gone gray and she’s never once died her hair. Her kids all have heads full of gray hair, and my father- her grandson- is starting to go gray. Mamaw? Nothing. I swear she looks exactly the same as she did when I was a kid.

Mamaw got Covid-19. She presented with symptoms and was rushed to the ER with a dangerously high fever and next to no oxygen. The doctors took note of her age (she’s apparently 93 as best she can guess) and her vitals and, well, Mamaw wasn’t gonna make it past Monday.

By Sunday night the fever was gone and she was complaining that the hospital didn’t get WWE and she was gonna “miss my wrasslin shows!”.

She was home and completely fine by Tuesday. By Wednesday she was calling up the anti-maskers in our family just to call them idiots and hang up.

When did hikers develop the collective impulse to stack rocks and make obnoxious, useless decorative cairns at every park and river they visit? I don’t remember seeing them as a kid except as trail markers, but now they’re EVERYWHERE. What part of “leave no trace” don’t people understand?

If you want to build rock towers, get your own rocks and build them at home. That’s perfectly fine. But rocks provide vital habitat for wildlife, especially in stream bed; moving and stacking them leaves them without shelter, crushes them, exposes their eggs, and leads to soil erosion and bank destruction. Leave them where they are.

Furthermore, cairns are used as trail markers to indicate routes. Creating pointless cairns for funzies and Instagram can actually be dangerous to other hikers who rely on them for navigation, and immensely frustrating for rangers. We don’t say “leave no trace” to be mean–we’re trying to protect both the environment and our visitors.

Huytuf, if you love lost hikers and crushed salamanders so much, why don’t you carve it into a lovely old tree and let the world know? Or perhaps you’d rather chisel in the sentiment of “my artistic whims are more important than the safety of others and the health of an ecosystem”? After all, if we’re not separate from the environment, nothing we can do can hurt it or cause problems.

This is a Hellbender salamander. Hellbenders are the third largest aquatic amphibian in the world, and the largest amphibian in the US. They are extremely endangered, in huge part because people are moving rocks in what little habitat they have left to them. These big boys can live for decades and once they choose a rock to live under, that’s it, that’s where they live, and they do not do well relocating. Studies have found that if their rock is moved or even disturbed, the hellbender will not return to it- even if you can replace the rock how you think you found it. Moving rocks, even just briefly, runs the risk of crushing them, their young, their eggs, or depleting the places where their food sources hide (they eat mostly crawfish and small fish that hide among rocks), either from you moving the rock or from other rocks falling in the absence of the rock you moved. Even if it doesn’t immediately kill them, it can permanently displace and ultimately cause the death of one.

These are not the only creatures that suffer from habitat being destroyed, they are just one I happen to know the face, name, and situation of. Please, please, please. It’s not worth the photo. It’s just not. Leave nature in place where it belongs, leave no trace. Protect those that have no defense against you other than your choice to be kind to them.
