what I would not give for a really good film adaptation of The Picture of Dorian Gray that could fully be about gay love and lust and friendship in a way that would make Oscar Wilde proud. Luca Guadagnino what are you doing next
watched the 2009 film last night, which may have the dubious honor of being the worst movie I've ever seen. TBH I think the fundamental miss of all film adaptations is that they never can resist having the revealed portrait be a horrifying, inhuman, zombie-like depiction of Dorian. But that's a misunderstanding of the entire point of the portrait. It's a much more mundane horror:
From Dorian's point of view, the horror is partially that of aging, but much more of having the cruelty with which you've lived your life show on your face. No longer being a muse, untouched by the world, but an ordinary person who must suffer the consequences of how they chose to live their life. It's a commonplace horror that every single other person must learn to face over the course of their life - except for Dorian Gray. So when he does face it, it terrifies him.
For Basil, the painter, the horror of the painting is tied to the fact that he has been in love with his young and beautiful muse for so long, and has projected so much of himself and his art onto Dorian. So when he sees the painting, and sees the cruel man that Dorian has grown into - due to the influence of Basil and his friend Lord Henry - it's the deep horror of realizing you loved an empty vessel. Of wondering - did I help to shape this man? Was my love somehow responsible for this? Or was this in him the entire time, and I was somehow drawn to it, and what does that say about me?
The TRUE horror, the really disturbing concept that I think would be AWESOME IN FILM, lies in the person of Dorian himself. A creepy, nasty, cunning old man, living in the body of a beautiful young person who everyone cannot help but project innocence on. It would be the role of a lifetime for an actor who really got to explore that. Anyway I guess I have to do everything myself and write the screenplay which is in my head BYEEEE
