i’ve warmed up significantly towards the concept of small talk ever since i learned that its sole purpose is to make friendly noises.

as long as you smile and nod, people are satisfied. it’s just to show that you are nice and there with good intentions. we’re small in a big world and have to rely on other people to be decent to us. so we do our little human dance to each other to say, “i’m not here to hurt you. here’s something we have in common, like the weather or sports or itchy sweaters, so we both know we’re on the same team. we both agree on a basic fact, like that it is rainy or that being itchy is uncomfortable, and this proves we can get along. i’m being light-hearted and non-threatening right now.”

small talk isn’t to get to know a person. it’s just a greeting to affirm you’re buddies in the universe.

i am motivated by wanting the other person to know i am friendly, so i have gotten pretty decent at small talk when i used to hate it.

'English is too hard right now' possibly changed my brain chemistry.

I'm someone who lives half her life in her second language, English, and I'm constantly struggling with sounding like a dumber version of myself. I know plenty of people here can relate.

It's a little detail about Ilya, both in the show and the books: the fact that he is actually smart and brilliant, but he hides his struggles with English by being harsh and to the point, gaining a reputation for being funny and a bit of an asshole instead of allowing people to call him stupid.

And I have never seen it represented like this. It's so refreshing, so comforting. The last time this topic hit me in fiction was in the movie Past Lives: “You dream in a language that I can’t understand.” How heartbreaking is that?

Ilya admitting that English is exhausting, but still making the effort when he is at his lowest—for Shane—made me sob. Because it’s so honest and so hard to admit that your language skills can and will get worse when you’re tired, or sad, or stressed. Sometimes I get so embarrassed because I start sounding like Ilya does at the beginning, and since I started reading the books/fanfiction, I realized that I find it so charming coming from him… so why can’t I give myself the same grace?

I don't know what I'm saying at this point. This is a love letter to Ilya, Past Lives and that one time Gloria (Modern Family) said "Do you even know how smart I am in Spanish?". We need more bilingual representation.

And grace, we definitely need more grace for ourselves.

Predictions for The Long Game adaptation – Heated Rivalry Season 2

Other couples 👨‍❤️‍👨 :

• Ryan / Fabian: very background couple (not much backstory, just their first scenes at summer camp).

• Troy / Harris: a dedicated episode (kind of like Scott / Kip in season 1).

Smut scenes 😌 :

I think most of them (because there are A LOT) are going to be turned into kiss scenes and montage moments. BUT here are the key smut scenes that must make it into the show:

• The gym smut scene (it’s so good, but I doubt they’ll do all of it).

• The trophy room scene (actually important to the story).

• The engagement smut scene (also important).

Honorable mention:

The Ilya bottoming scene. I feel like they’re not going to do it, but I love it and it explains so much about their new dynamic. The sub/dom dynamic is still there, but it adds depth to it. They’re probably not doing it, but I’m putting it out there lol.

The plot 📖 :

I think they’ll make the homophobic characters much more hateful and explore the more “real” aspects of it. A lot of things in the books were kind of ignored (Shane quitting the Montreal Metros, the media’s reaction, etc.).

That said, I also think Rachel Reid might explore more of that in her next book Unrivaled, so we’ll see.

My wishes ✨:

• NO MAN BUN FOR SHANE (and Hudson made it clear he doesn’t want one, so let’s hope they respect that).

• New actors: I don’t want to see actors I already know, especially for the other couples. I would be okay with famous actors for roles like Roger Crowell or the Ottawa Centors’ coach (I forgot his name oops).

• Facial hair on Ilya (Connor Storrie promotion videos on Crave specifically).

• More of Svetlana (she basically knows in Heated Rivalry the show, so they’ll definitely add changes from the book in season 2).

• More emphasis on Shane’s ED (one of the only things that was genuinely badly written in the book, I trust Jacob to get the job done)

That’s about it. I’m so excited for season 2 omg !!!! 😭💙
