as a teen, i was constantly harassed by adults enforcing ''dress codes'' on me. I very much experienced this as sexual harassment. I think this is one of many cases where people would more easily understand this as sexual harassment if I described it as if it happened to an adult.

imagine being on your lunch break, and your supervisor comes over to your table, tells you to stand up in front of everyone. they draw everyone's attention to your thighs. they tell you that you have broken the dress code because of the length of your shorts. they tell you to go change (so you do not get the rest of your lunch break). they do this every single day at lunch. every day. so you read the whole dress code front and back, and you choose your clothing carefully to not break it. you bring a cloth tape measure with you to work because they will not believe you. this time when your supervisor tells you that you're breaking dress code, you pull out your tape measure and show that you are within the limit. your supervisor says "I bet you wouldn't want me to bring you to the boss and let him measure it, would you?" it's clearly a threat: if you don't obey then you will be put alone in a room with your boss and he will touch your thighs. you don't know how to respond. you're taken out of lunch again.

this was my experience at school. replace supervisor with "teacher" and boss with "principal." this was sexual harassment. fuck dress codes.

as always, communication is key. i started eating at a different local restaurants and one of the first times i was there a waiter came to my table to let me know that i'd have to wait a while longer because they'd have to remake my dish as someone had put croutons on it without thinking. this means that they both caught the mistake and were willing to tell me it had happened. this made me feel safer. i am much more willing to try other dishes at this restaurant because i trust them to know what they're doing most of the time and admit to me when they don't.

I love visiting people who have some kind of pet reptile because they're always like "would you like to hold the reptile" and I'm like "of course I would" and then the rest of the conversation happens with me just holding a random reptile and the reptile Has No Feelings about the situation. They always just sit there, probably vaguely wishing to return to their heat lamp but clearly exuding an energy of This Might As Well Happen. and then I put it back in its enclosure and go home and the reptile very clearly has no strong feelings about the situation.

Yeah I think it’s kind of dumb to expect that companies will take care of you like they’re the patriarch of your entire extended family. Your retirement account can carry over from job to job, so why is there this expectation that you have to stay in one job for your entire life? The world of business and economics is always changing, so why is it so beyond the pale to expect employees to change too?

A company may change at the drop of a hat, but remember that means you have the freedom to change, too. Just look at Japan for the model of unchanging job environments

Seems that most people just want stability. They’ll put up with loads of bullshit and grief if it just means they get their basic expectations. They stay with bad jobs, bad romantic partners and bad situations just because the unknown is scary. And I get it to a certain degree. But expecting that this is “the way things should be!” Is kind of absurd tbh.

Of course there is also the whole current milieu of investors being more important than customers, but that keys into a massive problem that’s been growing out of control for decades, now. It’s definitely related, but OP’s boomer left politics will not improve that either

me: well, I don't know how many times a day the average person pees. the relevant data I have is that I am currently on a medication that helps me have to pee less often, and also that before I was on this medication, I had to pee a number of times per day that I personally found frustrating and inconvenient, although I often think that some degree of that is due to our society not being built to accommodate people who need to pee really often.
