Evan clutches his chest and collapses. He dies with a wet gurgle.

Jee-yun races a toddling Nash to pile up on his stomach, giggling and screeching about beating the dragon. Tommy is very well acquainted with the kind of grass stains he's going to have to get out of Evan's t-shirt later.

It's a beautiful summer's day. Howie and Hen are laughing together by the grill. Karen and Maddie are getting pedicures from Mara — his is drying — and Denny stomps over to Jee and Nash, roaring.

"Rarrgh! I'm that dragon's dad! I'm gonna get you!"

Shrieking, the kids try to pull Evan into protecting them, but he won't budge. He says something in Jee's ear.

"UNCLE TOMMY!" she yells across the yard. "HE NEEDS TRUE LOVE'S KISS!"

They're so many years into the on-again off-again dance they've been doing that no one else in the backyard so much as bats an eye. As Tommy picks his way across the grass, careful not to smear the hot pink on his toes, he tries to spook himself with the thought that their last off-again might have been the last. For some reason, he can't quite manage it.

The kids are long gone, chasing each other in a loop of the entire backyard, so when Tommy crouches and smacks a kiss against Evan's lips, he's the only one who can hear what Evan murmurs to thank him. Tommy kisses him again, only pulling away when Maddie threatens to get the hose.

It's a beautiful summer's day. And Tommy's in love.
