So a while back, @teawithtolkien tweeted that the duel between Finrod and Sauron reminded her of the song “The Devil Went Down to Georgia” by Charlie Daniels. As soon as I saw it, the alternate lyrics started coming together in my head, and I stayed up all night writing this… (sung/recited to the original tune ofc)
King Finrod went up to Angband
He was looking for a jewel to steal
He had made a vow and sadly now
Must keep up his end of the deal
But Morgoth’s aide descried them
Making haste in grim disguise
And so sent out all his wicked scouts
To bring them before his eyes
Then Sauron stripped them of their masks
And their disfigured shrouds
But Beren and the Elvenking
Then Finrod challenged Sauron
So he sang a skillful song
Of how a snitch died in a ditch
And it made an awful throng
To see who held more power
Finrod sing with all your soul
And wield your elvish guile!
For Morgoth owns these northern lands
And his servant haunts your isle
If you win, Beren steals a jewel from Morgoth’s iron crown
But if you lose, you’ll end up in the ground
So Finrod sang of bonds released
Of broken snares and traps
Of changing and of shifting shape
And of the chain that snaps
He sang of pearls strewn in the sand
On a far-off, western shore
Where sea birds cry out overhead
Before Finrod had finished,
“Lest you forget the violent bits
And the slaying of your kin”
Then the storm clouds gathered in the sky
And darkness began growing
The wind now wails in the burning sails
Where the hallowed blood runs flowing
Oh Felagund! Alas for vows
Alas, you left fair Nargothrond
And now your line will fade
Across the sea to Elvenesse
Will be your journey home
The thunders rumbles, fires burn
and Finrod fell before the throne
The storm clouds gather in the sky
And darkness begins growing
The wind wails in burning sails
When hallowed blood starts flowing
