As if 2020 couldn't get worse, it appears Netflix has a new movie coming out based on billionaire JD Vance's book "Hillbilly Elegy" ( both book and movie having the same name). I can not stress this enough; do NOT watch it. Its incredibly offensive to the Appalachian region and one sided.

It's supposed to be based on Vance's life growing up in Appalachia, only hes never lived here and is using one of America's poorest communities to make more money! The book/movie also blames "social rot," or the culture of Appalachia, and a lack of personal responsibility for the region's conservative politics. (When in reality we aren't even that conservative!) He's basically implying that systemic poverty is because the people in the region are "lazy" and that this should be a wake up call for why government funded projects shouldn't be wasted in the region.

Its a complete waste of time. Appalachia is poor because we're built from coal mines and once the mines dry up so do the towns. It has nothing to do with being lazy. Also yes, there is a drug problem in the region but it isn't as bad as this movie/book makes it out to be.

People really hate when I say that what the Inquisitor did at Redcliffe is exactly the same thematically and morally as what Solas is doing, so I’m just repeating it here because it’s the truth.

People literally just want to ignore that they already personally threw out an entire future THAT EXISTED in order to restore the world to it’s “rightful” state (without horrific magical enslavement and abominations and death), and it’s so fucking funny they don’t think it has any relevance to the story.

Be careful that your anti-racism doesn’t turn into classism behind your back.

Making jokes about how “hicks” from Appalachia or “hillbillies” from the plains are all racist and uneducated and inbred is deeply classist and plays into yet another narrative run by those in power to keep us divided. Remember how many of those “rednecks” died in the coal mines and then died for workers’ rights, and how horrifyingly monopolies are destroying rural towns. Remember that these communities often have nearly as many people of color as the cities do, by ratio.

These people are poor and have limited opportunities, just like so many other minorities. Don’t throw them under the bus because it’s an easy way to shift blame from “all white people” to “just the white people I already look down on.”

I don’t want to end Amazon, because it provides an incredibly useful service to the disabled community, the elderly, and those who simply don’t have time to go shopping due to working three jobs and the like. There currently isn’t a major alternative on the market that is the same level of cheap and accessible.

What I do want to do is enforce some goddamn antitrust laws on major web-based companies like Amazon and Google and Facebook, and roll back their attempts at monopolizing entire industries, and make them pay their lowest-rung workers a fair wage and stop running their warehouses like a scene from a dystopian nightmare.
