All, we’ve heard from a bunch of you who are concerned about Tumblr censoring NSFW/adult content. While there seems to be a lot of misinformation flying around, most of the confusion seems to stem from our complicated flagging/filtering features. Let me clear up (and fix) a few things:
1. Last year, we added “Safe Mode” which lets you filter out NSFW content from tag and search pages. This is enabled by default for new users and can be toggled in your Dashboard Settings. As some of you have pointed out, disabling Safe Mode still wasn’t allowing search results from all blogs to appear. This has been fixed.
2. Some search terms are blocked (returning no results) in some of our mobile apps. Unfortunately, different app environments have different requirements that we do our best to adhere to. The reason you see innocent tags like #gay being blocked on certain platforms is that they are still frequently returning adult content which our entire app was close to being banned for. The solution is more intelligent filtering which our team is working diligently on. We’ll get there soon. In the meantime, you can browse #lgbtq — which is moderated by our community editors — in all of Tumblr’s mobile apps. You can also see unfiltered search results on tumblr.com using your mobile web browser.
3. Earlier this year, in an effort to discourage some not-so-nice people from using Tumblr as free hosting for spammy commercial porn sites, we started delisting this tiny subset of blogs from search engines like Google. This was never intended to be an opt-in flag, but for some reason could be enabled after checking off NSFW → Adult in your blog settings. This was confusing and unnecessary, so we’ve dropped the extra option. If your blog contains anything too sexy for the average workplace, simply check “Flag this blog as NSFW” so people in Safe Mode can avoid it. Your blog will still be promoted in third-party search engines.
Aside from these fixes, there haven’t been any recent changes to Tumblr’s treatment of NSFW content, and our view on the topic hasn’t changed. Empowering your creative expression is the most important thing in the world to us. Making sure people aren’t surprised by content they find offensive is also incredibly important and we are always working to put more control in your hands.
Sorry for all of the confusion. If you have any more concerns or suggestions on how we can make these features clearer or more useful, please email us!
THE YEAR IS 2013
This was Tumblr Staff’s response to a Change.org 20,000 signature petition in 2013 to stop exactly what’s going on right now. Tumblr Staff, with David Karp at the head, clarified these things and put these guidelines into place to ensure that the site would remain safe and they would continue to allow NSFW content.
Cut to 5 years later we have literally 10 times as many people signing a petition right now in less than ¼th the amount of time for the exact same reason
Tumblr, we made this clear before and now 10 times as many people are making it clear again: You’re handling this in the wrong way.
You should be focusing on improving features like Safe Mode, the tagging system, blacklisting, whitelisting, filtering, blocking, reporting, etc.
Rather than deciding that destroying the foundation you’ve built and garnered for 11 years as a place where NSFW artists can easily get their work out there.
And would you look at that, this post itself has like a million notes.
I used to like this site
I loved the freedom of creativity. The amazing art (a lot of it SFW), the memes, the thoughtful posts I’d sometimes see. Some really amazing interactions between fans and blogs. The ease and flexibility of the posts (usually). But now @staff decided to get rid of all of that in favor of alt-right, bots, etc. Apple isn’t even that great. I deleted the app from my phone, and it kind of hurt to do that. Just to throw it all away like that. It wasn’t just the adult content I liked, but just… I don’t know. It was more than that to me. To most of us. I felt like I could be myself, unfilitered, as I was. But now they just want to get rid of my identity like so many other places online. I want to be an adult, you know? Not… whatever they want now. There’s no reason to use this if they’re just going to be exactly like Facebook now. I’ll just… use Facebook, instead. Wow. Facebook is better than Tumblr now. I never thought I’d have to say that. Whoever is in charge of Tumblr should just be straight up fired. Their gross incompetence and inability to manage a successful site has lead to the death of one of their more lucrative properties. We’ll move on. I just wish it wasn’t this painful. @staff should have listened to the community. You would have been allowed back on the Apple store if you had, without alienating everyone who made your site what it was. If you really think anyone’s going to stick around when there are going to be better alternatives, you’re mistaken. Have fun with the bots and the nazis.
In lieu of a huge dash-stretching twitter screenshot thread I’m just gonna copy/paste the tweets I made:
We all make fun of tumblr and say it’s worthless but literally no other site lets you make and interact with posts like that Longform writing with cutoffs, images, audio with text comments, video, the ability to add inline images
Twitter has 2 of those things and no easy way to view comments
The culture around adding a comment for your followers but not anyone else’s is also gone now, since tags on tiwtter are embedded into the tweet itself and not a supplemental addon.
Tumblr is my favorite social network for precisely how much freedom you have in how you make a post and in how easy it is to share said posts
Also: Chronological timeline and private likes and following lists with built-in separation of various accounts means that I didn’t have to have 3 fucking emails if I wanted to keep my horny off main
Fully customization themes and tag filtering ALSO means that artists have lost a really good way to have an all-inclusive gallery that lets them interact with their followers while filtering the art by finished pieces, sketches, stupid doodles, etc
Tumblr is a genuinely great social network and it’s really fucking saddening to watch the staff annihilate it with the orbital laser
In short:
Thank you tumblr user hustlerose for summarizing and also allowing me to show off two things I’m gonna miss about tumblr: inline images and links
Where to find me
Well I’ve been looking for a reason to get twitter.
Now that tumblr has decided that healthy sex and nudity are more offensive than white supremacy, you’ll now be able to find me on the following mediums...
twitter: @rsdoidle
YouTube: Here
I sincerely hope this decision of white conservatism bites you right in the ass, @staff. You should be ashamed of yourselves.
I’m wheezing -
NO NAKED ANKLES, even you Seb
I’m glad this blog still isn’t called abandonedporn
Is adult content allowed on Tumblr? Starting Dec 17, adult content will not allowed on Tumblr, regardless of how old you are. You can read more about what kinds of content are not allowed on Tumblr...
ALL ABOARD THE TWITTER TRAIN TOOT TOOT
And there goes tumblr actively killing their own site fucking dumb asses.
lol
It was fun while it lasted.

i bet this isnt going to solve the pornbot or child porn problem
absolutely not
Tumblr HQ, apparently.
Well, that’s a shame.
Obviously we’ll see what comes of it, but it looks as though Tumblr has decided to announce that it will close down in a year.
It definitely saddens me that I won’t be able to continue the Ask Croix series in the future. I’m also not sure what I should do with this account – I think it’s linked to the Aftertale account, so I may have to scrub NSFW content from it so as to keep the Aftertale tumblr safe.
As we get closer to the event, I’ll post up some locations you can continue to find my work.
What bothers me the most about this is that sexually restrictive policies like this tend to adversely affect the LGBTQ+ communities more heavily. A primary mode of communication and self exploration is handled through the creation and sharing of explicit works.
I enjoyed having a place where I could broadcast, even if very occasionally, positive themes about homosexual romance and sexuality. But, nothing lasts forever.
As Tumblr announces it’s decision to forfeit their position, drop out of the competition and inevitably close down as a result of mismanagement, some new website will spring up which serves its role and better. Or, when Tumblr realizes they’ve lost upwards of 70% of their user base and make a big-brainy-smarty-boy reversal on their super-good-and-geniusy decision.
When that time comes, I’ll see you over there, and we’ll start up a new series and a new dialogue.
It has been a pleasure.
I’m still coughing up my lungs.
tumblr will be dead as of Dec 17 for those of us who ever posted anything that was loving consensual sex between partners.
WE begged them to go after the bots they didn’t do shit.
Apple jumps in their shit last week over a child pornography incident removing their app from the site. Now *POOF* Okay great leader we will remove ALL PORN! Please don’t kill us.
No problem, you killed yourself. Tumblr will now be open for all ages, no 18+ switch because you can’t post any pics of consensual sex acts including graphic illustration, and because we are smarter than the original creators our rated G game does that.
So you see, there is capitulation to those who have money. And us end users? They don’t care and they never did.
BTW You can write all you want. fanficfucking is fine. Little Johnny can pound his pud while reading all about Garrus and Shepard. Just don’t draw it. Because imagination is everything.
