This is - legitimately - my favourite delivery of Shakespeare I have EVER seen (and I have seen some good-ass productions yo, in the Globe Theatre itself even). Like seriously, even though the words are unchanged, he’s stripped away ALL of the archaic pretense and assumed grandeur of ~presenting the bard~ that makes even the most wildly talented of actors and innovative of productions inherently inaccessible to a modern audience. Like, they’re still great, they can still communicate the message and (some) of the nuance, but they’re still always a step removed from being identifiable to any viewer’s lived experience. They’re still always reciting 15th century poetry. But this guy? This guy is like, screw iambic pentameter, to hell with being precious about the material, HOW WOULD AN ACTUAL PERSON SAY THIS SHIT?

Like this. And it’s beautiful. It’s beautiful to hear a soliloquy I loved so much already, and have it come to life in a way it never, ever, did before. I feel like I grasp his motivations, his twists and turns, no longer on an academic level but on a visceral, instinctive one. Because he’s presenting his mental and emotional journey in a way that speaks honestly, like a real person.

So yeah, this shit post? I love it. Deeply and sincerely.

You can absolutely tell that for a lot of people their only experience of Shakespeare is some combination of; reading the plays in high school, local am-dram, and maybe one Kenneth Branagh movie if you’re lucky.

I’ve been fortunate enough to see several of the Royal Shakespeare Company’s performances at the Globe, and let me tell you, those guys absolutely are doing all of this and more. When you have a talented cast and director who understand the material, this is exactly the kind of results you get.

I have died laughing at A Comedy of Errors. I’m not joking when I say it is very nearly the hardest I have ever laughed in my life. I was down in the pit (standing area) bent over double, struggling to stay on my feet. I saw a performance of As You Like It where the wrestling match crashed off of the stage and down into the crowd, and we were all standing around them in a circle cheering and jeering, just like crowds would have back in the day. And that’s kind of the most important part; this isn’t a reinvention, it’s just performing the material the way it was meant to be performed.

The problem is that so many people are used to either reading it dry off the page, having it read to them by people who don’t understand how to read it, or performed at them by people who don’t understand how to perform it. But if you go and actually see this stuff done by proper theatre troupes who know their stuff you’re going to get an entirely different experience.

why are time loops always only like 1 day long?

the real horror is a months or years long time loop. no speedrunning your torture here. you have to sit with the consequences of your actions for a loooong time before the release of knowing the consequences and actions have been erased.

but oh, all the actions and consequences are gone. those relationships you built? empty. you can never build them again without the constant guilt of knowing that it's not as real the second, third, thirtieth time when you already know all their secrets and they none of yours.

but you can't hide. you can't isolate yourself because what if this is the time the loop breaks and then what? years gone by of missed chances with people who have changed you a thousand times and now circumstances have changed. you can never build back what was washed away by your own inaction. they'll never be able to meet you like they did the first time if you don't choose to meet them the first time every time

Fantastic advice!! And something I’ve realized I’ve been doing for myself these last 6-7 years, even though I never had a name for it.

Seriously, this is such a great way to go about organizing your home.

I really can’t express how much easier your life can be when you accept that there’s no objectively right way to do this kind of stuff, especially when you let go of the idea that it’s a moral failure when you can’t do something the “correct way” nor is it evidence of you being lazy.

Working with (leaning into) your natural limits and instincts can do wonders for you in your day-to-day life.

Really struck by the demands Raven Payment stated in the speech she gave when asked to do a 'land acknowledgment' at the Denver No Kings protest:

Here is what I demand and what I expect from every person who says they mean change. First, return land where possible and co-manage what cannot be returned. Sacred sites are not decoration in a brochure. They are living obligations. Second, stop granting permits to projects that destroy water, soil and air especially when Indigenous people object. Third, take away the police budgets that criminalize survival and put that money into housing, community health and substance treatment. Fourth, fund reparations and buyback programs that actually put resources back where they were stolen. Fifth, force honest history into classrooms and expunge the lies that make genocide digestible.

I think there's a lot we could discuss about how to achieve land back and justice for Indigenous people generally but I found this to be a very concise and accessible starting place.
