Light yagami’s clear depressive symptoms aren’t talked about enough in the fandom. He is definitely not “just slightly bored” he’s anhedonic and intellectually lonely, due to his intelligence and how he’s always expected to be perfect. (The perfect student, perfect brother, perfect son) He’s popular, yes but he as barely any real friends who he actually cares about. The only people that he does harbour some semblance of care about is his family. No mentally well person would become a mass murderer with a god complex just to feel any form of dopamine boost.

I blame him (at least partially) for the rise in anti-indian racism in the late 2010s to today and people look at me like I'm the friend who's too woke when I say that. But it's true
and you’d be right to blame him. he normalized the rise in anti-indian and anti-desi racism through “jokes.” it took me forever to take pride in my indian heritage bc of the culture he helped set up.
nah, you’re exactly the right amount of woke with this take because you’re on the money. part of what makes racists and xenophobes feel “justified” in their disdain and dehumanization of indians is by sweeping a broad brush over us and saying all scam callers are nefarious indians when scam calling is a global issue and people are often tricked/trafficked into it with no way to leave, some people are even beaten for not earning money in the scams or not wanting to take part. india has one of the largest populations so, statistically, we tend to be very visible in some industries and people will stupidly think we are the only ones doing it or we all do it when realistically other populations do it in the same, or even higher, rates in proportion with their population.
another mechanism for justifying anti-indian feelings is calling us dirty and filthy, blaming the residents for the infrastructural and educational issues instead of state or local governing bodies like panchayats. when you’re seeing a joke about indians being filthy or scammers, it is a display of casual racism you’re seeing.
I'm not sure when the conversation around "sympathetic" portrayals of Ganondorf went from "many good Ganondorf portrayals put all the blame of his actions on being controlled by Demise and dismiss his actual grievances with Hyrule" to "any character development whatsover for Ganondorf that shows any interiority turns him into a misunderstood villain who is not actually evil and we should return to villains who are just evil for the sake of being evil". The same people who argue the latter will also argue that they are tired of Ganondorf as a villain. Well listen here bud, swapping out Ganondorf for another dude with cardboard cutout writing isn't going to make the game interesting unless you're like five and get captivated by new colors and shapes on the screen.
Also people act we're grabbing any character development for Ganondorf out of thin air to make him sound like a "good guy"? Did Hyrule not have a civil war? Were the Gerudo not despised and ostracized in Hyrule? Did the gods not make the baffling decision to FLOOD HYRULE just to not let Ganondorf have it instead of, you know, "SMITING HIM? Did Ganondorf not mention that the desire for power was planted in his heart because he grew up in harsh conditions and desired what Hyrule had? Was he not executed for a crime he had yet to commit? Was the Gerudo desert not gutted of Gerudo? Did the Arbiter's Grounds not have evidence of gutted elements of the Spirit Temple? Was he not the king of a highly developed Gerudo kingdom who was sent multiple invitations to give up his kingdom's status as an independent nation and bow to Hyrule in fealty? Maybe the problem is that people can't see that Hyrule bears responsibility for its dubious actions, that maybe the story here is that questionable actions by Hyrule leads to a reaction (the rise of Ganondorf). They will just argue that in this case you need to suspend your belief and believe that fantasy imperialism, fantasy racism, fantasy torture chambers and fantasy genocide can be good things in a fairy tale! Of course you can't apply this suspension of belief to Ganondorf though because he is "evil" and thus cannot have any rhyme or reason for anything he does apart from "he's just a baaaaaad person guys".

I mean, what could go wrong with a race of people who are all dark-skinned women who by default are seen as an inherently stained, defiled race of people that constantly have to answer and apologize for the wrongdoings of one person? /s
A race of women who are only sympathetic specifically because they chose to align with and unquestionably serve the interests of the very people who created the conditions for the whole mess in the first place?
Ganon being a flat, "he's just pure evil" villain has always been one piece in the broader puzzle a lot of Nintendo fans aren't willing to challenge which is how the series consistently portrays Hyrule's divine right to rule as unquestionable good. The gods have a million other solutions because they're...y'know, gods.
Ganon can still be a bad guy and we have more examination beyond "evil desert man can't be controlled, local elf stabs him for the 30th time."
Violence is rarely rationalized as "violence is awesome, the state is completely right." What they do instead is set up circumstances where violent, militaristic actions or acts of torture are the only rational course of action. Ganon is evil. He can't be trusted, reasoned with, or seen as even a human--he represents a concept of just mindless violence, thus anything Hyrule does is seen as necessary and just.
Need people to open up because it's telling that we can't even envision fantasy racism and imperialism as being different.
Light Yagami studies despite having no real hunger for knowledge. It was the first thing I noticed about him. He spends hours in the books, as a boy who always had school come easy to him and doesn't need to in order to be successful, because he also understands without it he could never be the best, be one of the top students in Japan. Like a lot of people I know quite honestly, his grades, smarts, and honestly most aspects of his life, is just something he maintains, not as a healthy goal, but evidence to both himself and others of his superiority.
You see Light doesn't have self confidence, he has an ego. Light doesn't have a steady sense of self as much as an image of him he fully believes and must maintain unless he were to suffer with needing to acknowledge he's not always going to be the smartest in the room. That's why when his plans are foiled, whether epically or mudnaely, he has a bombastic reaction to it. Light is so entertaining to watch because when he cares about something, failure in it literally drives him crazy. That's why he has the lamest loss in anime history. Because he literally has never trained himself to handle a lost and has only prepared by simply optimizing himself to just be less likely to lose.
And this is why it's not that ridiculous to say he would adore a place where he could be wrong. He would never say it, even convince himself he wouldn't like it, since the only worse thing than needing help is being the type of person to lower yourself further by actually asking for it. But Light truly would enjoy some place where he can just be imperfect and stray from the image of Light Yagami and not feel belittled. It's exhausting to constantly have to be a something that's needs to always go somewhere, and despite what Light may want you to believe, he is a human who gets exhausted like the rest of us. If he didn't have to be the best of the best, but not necessarily be viewed as inferior, he'd be beyond happy. Someone who would immediately recognize him as an equal and respect him and his intelligence greatly without Light needing to constantly perform as Light Yagami.

but truly even if you don't ship them romantically i think kiyomi and misa are one of the most underrated dynamics in death note canon. like. imagine being kiyomi takada for a second. you have been asked to become a murderer. you'll do it, because you know it's the right thing, it's how you'll help build the new world, but you can't quite shove down the pangs of guilt every time you take another life. and then in waltzes this woman who is your exact opposite (bubbly, indiscrete, loud, stupid) and you learn that she used to have your job. she used to be in your exact shoes. and now she's been cast aside by the person who is telling you you're his one-and-only. but you're different from her, right? that won't happen to you. you're different. you're better. you're kiyomi fucking takada and you do not lose. (you've never done anything but lose.)
and it's because she lost her memories, sure, but how does she look so cheerful? doesn't it haunt her? did she shudder like you when she took her victims, or did she do it with the same manic grin she wears when you greet her in the hallways? apparently she got her powers herself. you were chosen, which makes you different, makes you special, but also means you were never really the one in control after all. the woman in front of you has killed people; she didn't even have to be asked. you know this. she doesn't know. do you tell her? of course not. it would jeopardize the entire plan, and besides, she's nothing. she doesn't matter. you have to stop thinking about her, kiyomi, you're starting to sound obsessed. was she better than you at being a murderer, too?
