I FOUND THE TWEET THAT GOT ME TO WATCH PRIDE AND PREJUDICE
Man this store has a weird playlist, it's all Weird Al songs but with the lyrics switched out for ones that aren't funny.
Keepin it cool! Experimenting with some more painterly backgrounds for her, gouache on wood panel.
Original for sale on ko-fi!
The Australian Ballet is doing Alice in Wonderland again and on one hand I’ve seen it before, and on the other, their Queen of Hearts has my favourite costume in anything every
It’s just this and her court pushes her around the stage on wheels and every act it gets taller until she towers over everyone
Also in act 3 (I think) it swings open at the front and her husband is sitting inside reading a newspaper
I saw this again on Tuesday so here are some things I’d forgotten about:
This is the only Alice adaptation I’ve ever seen that doesn’t cut the caucus race
The mad hatter wears taps throughout and it’s so jarring and surprising it’s perfect
The executioner shadows almost everyone who dances with the Queen
Lewis Carroll is a character in the ballet and becomes the white rabbit who leads Alice into wonderland which is bad and wrong because Carroll is the dodo but does work very well
They started dropping rose petals from the ceiling onto the audience when Alice looked through the door to the garden and it was utterly magic
The Cheshire Cat is made of about 10 different puppets that dance around the stage
Which reminds me Alice is styled after Alice Liddell rather than the John Tenniel illustrations
I don’t think the king of hearts actually dances he just wanders around looking confused
here’s a video
more. (btw this is a parody/reference to the very famous “rose adagio” from sleeping beauty)
the Caterpillar is pretty neat too
(all of these videos are from the Royal Ballet’s productions in 2014 and 2017)
Finally an adaptation that makes feel like I’m going to have stroke, it’s perfect
This looks fucking bonkers, I love it.
using R is like "haha i am a fucking wizard, I am the smartest person on the planet. look at me. Quantifying alcohol use in raccoons. I am peak brilliance" instantly to "I am going to do another 9/11"
Dreamt I was walking through a big open field, and I found a very terrifying lady. She was frozen in place, there was a really horrible electrical buzz coming from her. She wasn’t outwardly burnt but smoke was pouring off her. She had a smell of burnt rubber so bad I woke up sick.
my mom was trying to chew through some really tough steak and she turned to me and said “just call me The Gnawer.” she would do numbers here
she told me she doesn't remember saying this. quote, "must have been steak-induced hysteria"
The tailors at Colonial Williamsburg made a suit for their cat
The best part is that they were inspired by a diary entry from 1775, written by a 12 year old tailor’s apprentice who had been left unsupervised all day and decided to make a suit for a cat. Here’s a link to the blog post about it, but I’ll just paste the whole diary entry here:
“I had been at work about two months when Christmas came on – and here I must relate a little anecdote. The principal [the tailor] and his lady were invited to a party among their friends…while it devolved on me to stay at home and keep house. There was nothing left me in charge to do, only to take care of the house. There was a large cat that generally lay about the fire. In order to try my mechanical powers, I concluded to make a suit of clothing for puss, and for my purpose gathered some scraps of cloth that lay about the shop-board, and went to work as hard as I could. Late in the evening I got my suit of clothes finished; I caught the cat, put on the whole suit – coat, vest, and small-clothes [breeches] – buttoned all on tight, and set down my cat to inspect the fit.
“Unfortunately for me there was a hole through the floor close to the fireplace, just large enough for the cat to pass down; after making some efforts to get rid of the clothes, and failing, pussy descended through the hole and disappeared; the floor was tight and the house underpinned with brick, so there was no chance of pursuit. I consoled myself with a hope that the cat would extricate itself from its incumbrance, but not so; night came and I had made on a good fire and seated myself for some two or three hours after dark, when who should make their appearance but my master and mistress and two young men, all in good humor, with two or three bottles of rum. After all were seated around the fire, who should appear amongst us but the cat in his uniform. I was struck speechless, the secret was out and had no chance of concealing; the cat was caught, the whole work inspected and the question asked, is this your day’s work? I was obliged to answer in the affirmative; I would then have been willing to take a good whipping, and let it stop there, but no, to complete my mortification the clothes were carefully taken off the cat and hung up in the shop for the inspection of all customers that came in.”
“I was hoping they’d beat me and forget about it but to my horror they stuck my work up on the fridge”

She's being so big and brave.
The long awaited sequel.
It's such a effective choice in terms of emotional and thematic impact that Nana Crusoe's death happens at the end of S3E7 The Sunshine Treatment. Because it's an episode all about how there is no quick and easy fix to grief, no matter no many platitudes or lavender-scented tissues you throw at it. But until the last few minutes, the tone of the episode is primarily comedic.
Yes, there are serious themes at play, but our focus is on the schadenfreude and absurdity of Chapman and Rudyard's respective doomed attempts to counsel their clients. We laugh at Chapman's inability to really sit with other people's sadness and at Rudyard's failure to empathise with the clients he claims to be trying to help. Trying to properly confront grief is what breaks the supposedly perfect Eric Chapman until he's mooning a group of assembled mourners and hysterically declaring "I can’t take away your sadness! I tried to do it, but I can’t! I’ve failed!" before running There's a profound point being made and there is a sense of pathos, but the situation is ridiculous enough to be largely funny. And at this point, the show doesn't actually focus on the experiences of the grieving people that Rudyard and Chapman have failed to help.
Until the last few minutes of The Sunshine Treatment, grief is something that happens to minor characters in Wooden Overcoats. And any sense of the sadness of death is usually undercut by the absurdity and dark humour involved in the manner of death and/or whatever is going on with the funeral. We don't fully have to dwell on the actual reality of death and loss for too long. There's sadness, but it's at arms length and the listener is usually too busy laughing or wondering about the Funns' antics to properly register the constant presence of grief.
And then, suddenly, unexpectedly, right at the end of the episode, loss comes right to the door of our main characters. Georgie's nana is dead. And all of the themes that have been humourously presented for the rest of the episode become relevant in a heartbreaking new way. The episode ends with Rudyard, who has dealt so badly with the grief of his customers, calling out to Georgie, wondering what's wrong. And we don't hear her tell him about her nana. But we know - more than ever after this episode - that he won't know what to say, that there's nothing he can say that will make things better. Just before the cut to credits, there's a pause where all we can hear is the pouring rain and none of the characters are saying anything.
I like to imagine a post-betrayal scene where, after being used up and discarded, Kris is left so desperate they finally break and give the player everything we "want".
They'll smile! They'll talk to the player! They'll tell us everything!! They'll never complain! They'll be the most useful and helpful vessel we've ever had!
(Please please please don't throw them away.)
It's a shame that porn games and sim games don't have a lot of present overlap, because I feel like "horny mechsplo game where you have to actually win the fights to get to the sexy bits and it's one of those hyper-detailed 1990s era mech piloting sims that uses every single key on the keyboard" would do numbers with a very particular audience.
