Oh we're all feeling this one aren't we?
parenting commitment level 3000
apparently a requirement for working at poison control is a talent for stand-up comedy
my mom brought her ILL-BEHAVED, UNWASHED DOG into our HARMONIOUS HOME
that is the most black cat looking black cat i've seen in my life, good for them.
she has been practicing since she was very young
What a dignified and shapely beast…
THE advantage of memorizing poetry is that when somethings happening, maybe even you’re in a situation or a location, you can just go “ok. lady of shallott time” and boom. you reclaimed your mental space and attention for YOU for the next ten minutes
Everyone should be able to do one card trick, tell two jokes, and recite three poems, in case they are ever trapped in an elevator.
— Lemony Snicket, Horseradish
i know this is humorous but! i learned from one of my college friends (who learned from a therapist) that reciting a poem you have memorized is a great grounding & focusing technique when you’re spiraling into anxiety or panic. i can personally attest that The Tyger has staved off several panic attacks.
so like if said “situation or location” is freaking you out really badly, “lady of shallott time” can help reclaim your mental health too
Ok everybody share what poems you can recite in case we’re trapped in an elevator.
I’ve got the first 42 lines of The Canterbury Tales in Middle English, the first 10 lines of Beowulf in Old English, the first canto of Tolkien’s Lay of Beren and Luthien, and Sonnet XVI by Pablo Neruda (“I love the handful of the earth you are”). I used to have the Proem of the Kalevala but I’m a bit shaky on it it now and I think i’ve only got the first two sentences. Anda handful of others I half-remember which i could probably do if I were with someone else who half-remembered the same ones and we could prompt each other back and forth.
a memory hit me out of the blue - my dad, the night before prom, teaching me how to dance. i knew how to tie a tie from years of costuming, i had picked out my (ill fitting, ugly) suit, but id never danced formally. dad didn't know how to teach me to lead, so he had me stand on his feet (diabetic, chronically painful feet) facing out and mimed the moves while i memorized them.
neither of us knew it was the last year i'd walk independently. neither of us knew he'd die just four years later. it was just an old, mexican father doing his best to support his queer kid before prom, in our shitty little apartment. we danced on that stained carpet until he ran out of breath. then he told me about all the years he'd spent dancing on stage or in various clubs. coughing around a cigarette he explained all the etiquette i should know, informed from a mix of his religious upbringing and his time as a wedding singer, mixed up with advice he read online and scenes from various gay movies.
he bought me my first tie. he made sure i shined my shoes before going out. he cut my hair in front of the bathroom mirror and told me for the first time i looked like me.

That is. Not the caption I was expecting
There has been a crazy amount of fear-mongering about the age of first time moms getting older and older and how moms 40+ were the only demographic of women where the fertility rate rose, making it the first time in history that there are more women 40+ having children than teen pregnancies. The right is spinning this as being indicative of modern women being selfish and sewing in rhetoric about how a woman’s eggs dry up and blow away the moment she hits 30.
What is interesting is that they never mention the average age for a first time mom is 27 and the average age for a first time dad is 31. We are seeing dudes who are 50 saying “I’m not ready to settle down and start a family, I’m going to do that someday but I’m still out here seeing my wild oats.” My dad is 55 and several of his friends have had kids in the past 5 years. They’re angry at girls and women for not popping out babies the moment they start menstruating but not at men for deciding to start a family when they are GERIATRIC!
Maybe the birth rate would be higher if it was easier to find a good life partner and start a family sooner. Maybe it would be higher if there were less men dicking around for 50+ years and deciding to start a family only when they’re on the precipice of entering a nursing home, at which time their female peers have gone through menopause and the 20 something girls they chase don’t want them. It is always the fault of women when it comes to matters of reproductive health. It is their fault if they become a single mother. It is their fault if they don’t get to start a family until they’re 40+. It is their fault if they choose to be child free because of the state of the world and the amount of trust it requires to have a child with someone.
Why are grandpa-dads something we’re expected to turn a blind eye to and women over 40 having their first baby something we’re supposed to be angry at?
i dont like how the ios saluting emoji is cut in half so i glued him back together in my high tech surgery program called "MS Paint" the ms stands for medical surgery.

Every word that starts with an N should have a silent G in front. Gnorway. Gnuclear. Gnervous system. Gnipples.
At some point my brain decided based on the word knee that body parts beginning with a n sound should have a silent k (particularly the word neck) so I am against gnipples wholeheartedly, it should clearly be knipples!
How about a compromise? Gn words and kn words get switched. So now it’s gneecaps and gnowledge, but it’s also knome and Knosticism.
the problem with this is that it doesn’t account for the original dilemma, which was gnipples vs. knipples
I, for one, think it should be pnipples, like pneumonia
Okay, but what about mnipples, like ‘mnemonic’?
Gkpmnipples (pronounced “nipples”)
This is the kind of content I remain for. (and y'all provide on the regular, I love you)

im honestly surprised (not really surprised considering what website this is) that i haven't seen anyone on here talk about Lil Nas X getting violently arrested after suffering some kind of mental health episode. I wish he was getting more attention and support.
Opinion: Mental illness in Black people is criminalized, and Lil Nas X being thrown to the ground and arrested is no laughing matter, Mey Ru
good article explaining what happened and why the response to it, which is mostly people chalking it up to a joke since they never took Lil Nas X seriously as a real person, is so sad to see
