the moments where charlie and frank are portrayed as a more father-son relationship don't discount the reading of them as romantically interested in each other btw. unfortunately i think it's both. frank is the father charlie never had, charlie is the wife frank never had, and it's a bit the other way around too (frank is happy to mentor charlie like a dad and charlie jealously views frank's romantic/sexual interests as rivals). i think they do want to be related and fill that role for each other and they also act on a want to have something unspoken that is deeper and more complex. it's the confusion between those two simultaneous wants that makes it so interesting (and off-putting)(and funny), especially because existing in the gray area of being both father and son/husband and wife to each other clearly works so well for them. both of them also have skewed ideas of family boundaries (frank with the twins, charlie with his mom - among other things) so i don't think they necessarily even see a problem flirting with the idea of a relationship (acting like a married couple and engaging sexually, as they do) under the threat of potentially being related. is that fucked up and weird and depraved? yes
