to anyone in the areas impacted by the wildfire smoke, my #1 biggest piece of advice as someone whos been dealing with wildfire smoke in the NW united states for years, is build yourself a Corsi-Rosenthal Cube

they perform as well as expensive HEPA air cleaners, and are comparatively VERY inexpensive. all you need is a box fan, 4 air filters, a piece of cardboard, and some duct tape!!!!

i think it took us maybe a half hour to put ours together, if that, and we replace the filters every 3 months. it's really made a HUGE difference, both when the air quality is bad, but also with our allergies

I see this version a lot and the above is excellent, but air filters are expensive and you can build a similar concept with a single filter using the box fan box as a spacer to increase airflow. I built one in 2022 when we had a crazy wildfire season and it was astounding how much of a difference it made to the air quality in my house. (I still use mine every year, have replaced the filter several times.)

Unfortunately the original instructions for the smaller version were posted on X and have vanished into the ether, but I found a link to instructions (sans pictures) here:

Worth a try if you don't have the money for 4-5 filters!

it’s so magical and beautiful that there are sprawling interconnected cave systems carved deep into the earth by various geological forces and you don’t have to go in them. there are miles and miles of stone passageways in total darkness that require you to exhale all the air out of your lungs to squeeze through parts of them and you don’t have to be there. some of these squeezes are underwater and require cave divers to take off their oxygen tanks and push them through ahead of them and me i am above ground looking at the sky as we speak. there are untold subterranean wonders no human has ever seen and i will not be the one to discover them #grateful #blessed

learning how to garden and grow plants is so difficult, because if you can’t do it right from the beginning (which we can’t), then you’re going to kill plants and that’s sad and I feel like giving up rather than learning more and risking more accidental plant-killings….

I think we need to learn to trust nature’s abundance. Plants produce hundreds, thousands, sometimes millions of seeds. So what if I use some of them to learn how to grow? There’s no waste. Even if the seed didn’t turn into a plant, it turns into compost. The soil and the pots can still be used. Maybe next time… or the time after that! One day it’ll work out. Some seeds may never grow into big plants, but nature has foreseen this and planned for it.

Learning to grow and connect is a worthwile enterprise and worth spending some time and a handful of seeds on. Learning to trust in nature’s abundance, if we are humble and respectful.

Learning to trust in our own abilities. Maybe learning takes time. Time will come. It’s ok.

Also, your garden, your soil, is alive. It’s a partner in your attempts to get things to grow. Part of working with that living thing is figuring out what it wants and likes - which things suit it and which don’t.

Learning the foibles of your own environment can’t be done without a few plants dying. How else are you to know that this plant that says it thrives in shade won’t thrive in your shady spot, unless you try it and see?

To find out what grew in my garden I had to try a lot of plants, and the garden self-selected what it was going to keep.

Gardening is a partnership with nature. It’s not all about you. You can do everything perfectly and if that plant doesn’t want to grow, it will not grow. Trust nature’s abundance, and trust your own abilities, but also learn to respect your garden when it says no.

Half of what has made the past two years gardening valuable for me has been learning that I have to adapt to my environment rather than expecting it to adapt to me.

(tl/dr - it may not be you who’s killing the plants. It may be your garden. Killing off like 95% of the plants that try to grow is just nature’s way. Don’t beat yourself up, just try something different, and eventually you’ll hit on something that does thrive there.)
