How do you feel about Americans?

Americans have one of the highest obesity rates in the world, yet they hold the most Olympic medals. They have a horrible education system, yet eclipse the rest of the world in scientific research. The country is filled with clueless philistines, yet their culture permeates every society, in some way, across the planet. The country is still less than three centuries old, but has spent most of it at war. They are universally hated or feared by nearly every other country on the planet, yet the first to offer help during a disaster. Their people are stubborn and never content with the way things are, and for better or worse, all of them imagine how things could be better. Every American is a bankrupt billionaire, a prince in exile, a grounded astronaut, a disgraced scientist. There are the people who do not settle for who they are, but for what they may become.

The country has her problems. Certainly their government has a lot of blood on its hands. But there is something charming about the people I can’t quite place. Even the delusional leftists or the out of touch neocons. There is a certain magic about the place that you don’t find elsewhere. There are bad parts and bad people, to be sure, but there are just as many good parts and good people. It is a land of extremes. But even the poor aren’t really that poor. Much better to be a homeless American living on the beach than literally freezing to death at a metro station in Moscow.

Jegulus is a product of fandom misogyny, analysis

The rise of Jegulus is not a coincidence. It is the result of a fandom culture that repeatedly prioritizes male characters over female ones and treats women as obstacles to be removed rather than people worth exploring.

At the center of this issue is Lily Evans. James Potter already has a canon love story. He already has a relationship that shapes his character, influences his growth, and becomes one of the most important relationships in the entire series. Yet fandom routinely pushes Lily aside in favor of Regulus Black, a character with significantly less narrative importance.

This pattern reveals the real foundation of Jegulus. The ship only became possible because fandom decided that a male character deserved Lily's place in the story more than Lily herself.

The treatment of Lily within Jegulus spaces demonstrates the problem clearly. She is frequently erased, diminished, rewritten, or reduced to a barrier standing in the way of the relationship fandom actually wants. Meanwhile, Regulus is elevated into a central romantic figure despite the fact that his canon role is far smaller and morally worse.

The contrast is impossible to ignore. A woman who fought against blood supremacy is pushed aside. A man who voluntarily joined a terrorist organization is transformed into a romantic lead.

This is not a celebration of complexity. It is the result of a fandom culture that consistently grants male characters more sympathy, more attention, and more narrative value than female characters.

The popularity of Jegulus also reflects fandom's broader tendency to view male-centered stories as inherently more interesting than stories involving women. Female characters are expected to justify their presence. Male characters are automatically considered worthy of endless analysis, redemption arcs, and romantic reinterpretation.

As a result, Jegulus has become less about the characters themselves and more about the replacement of a female-centered relationship with a male-centered one.

For these reasons, Jegulus is not a challenge to existing fandom biases. It is one of the clearest examples of them. The ship thrives within a culture that repeatedly sidelines women, minimizes their importance, and reallocates their narrative significance to male characters. Its popularity is inseparable from that pattern.

There’s something I think people really need to understand when discussing Snape and the Death Eaters, and it’s that a lot of the discourse around him is intellectually dishonest to a ridiculous degree.

First of all, I’m the first person to say that comparing the Death Eaters to Nazis is politically inaccurate and honestly kind of lazy. The structure of Voldemort’s movement is not equivalent to historical fascism in the classical sense. Fascist movements like Nazism relied on mass propaganda, populist rhetoric, appealing to the working class, mobilising huge portions of the population through nationalist discourse, fearmongering and social alienation. Voldemort does not do that. Voldemort recruits primarily through aristocratic blood supremacy networks and old-money elitism. It’s a cult-like supremacist inner circle, not a mass political party built around public mobilisation.

But even putting that aside entirely, what genuinely blows my mind is how people talk about Severus joining the Death Eaters as if he was some fully formed 35-year-old man with a stable support system, financial security and emotional maturity making calculated ideological decisions. He was seventeen. Seventeen. Poor. Isolated. Abused. Socially alienated. Raised in violence. Repeatedly humiliated. Surrounded by people who either enabled his abuse or directly participated in it. And the only group offering him protection, belonging, validation and power was a radicalised extremist circle. And people act shocked that he got recruited?

I’m sorry, but some of you desperately need to leave fandom spaces and interact with actual human beings. Because in the real world, vulnerable teenagers get radicalised all the time. Into cults. Into gangs. Into extremist politics. Into abusive religious groups. Into criminal organisations. That’s literally how recruitment works. You target vulnerable people who have unmet emotional needs and no stable support systems.

And what makes this discourse even more exhausting is how deeply classist it is. Because let’s be honest here: if Severus had been a rich traumatised aristocratic boy from a respected family, half of fandom would be writing 800k redemption arcs about his “complexity.” But because he’s poor, socially awkward, visibly traumatised and emotionally dysregulated, people reduce him to “evil incel nazi.” Which is funny coming from fandom spaces that constantly scream about mental health awareness, trauma, neurodivergence and social justice until the traumatised person is unpleasant, angry, difficult or comes from a background they subconsciously look down on.

Because here’s the thing people don’t like admitting: trauma victims are not always nice. They are not always soft. They are not always emotionally articulate. They are not always healthy. Sometimes they’re bitter. Defensive. Volatile. Socially maladjusted. Hypervigilant. Sometimes they lash out. Sometimes they become deeply unlikeable before they heal , if they ever heal at all.

And Severus never got the chance to heal.

Some of you genuinely talk about a heavily traumatised, abused teenager recruited into extremism the same way conservatives talk about poor kids getting recruited into gangs: with zero structural analysis, zero empathy and zero understanding of how human vulnerability actually functions.

And yes, people can change. This is another thing fandom spaces seem incapable of understanding. Human beings are not static moral caricatures. I’m nearly thirty. I have met people who left cults. People who left extremist political groups. People who escaped abusive ideologies. People who were raised in deeply reactionary environments and later completely changed as adults. That happens constantly in real life. But apparently fandom morality has become so puritanical and chronically online that some of you think a person should be permanently defined by the worst thing they were manipulated into at seventeen, even if the rest of their life is spent trying to atone for it.

And honestly? A lot of this discourse reeks of people who have never interacted meaningfully with anyone outside their own social bubble. Because if you actually work with vulnerable people, poor communities, abuse victims, former addicts, ex-prisoners, traumatised individuals or radicalisation survivors, your perspective becomes a lot less simplistic very quickly. But instead fandom spaces are full of people who claim to care about nuance, rehabilitation, trauma and systemic violence while simultaneously reducing a traumatised abuse victim to a one-dimensional moral failure because he wasn’t “nice enough” about his suffering.

At that point you’re not progressive. You’re just judgmental with prettier vocabulary.

it has always been baffling to me that team iron man has so many shooters. like i get that majority of team iron man supporters are only on his team because of who he has on it but i dont get how anyone could genuinely think tony was in the right about anything in civil war. steve was 100% right about the accords and tony’s hypocritical ass was only in support of them because of his guilt about sokovia, which he was projecting onto the team. then tony goes and blackmails a child into fighting on his team without really giving peter the full context before he goes and breaks the accords himself. the only thing tony was remotely right about was that the avengers (mainly him because sokovia and by extension johannesburg was his fault) needing accountability, but the accords as they were was the wrong way to do it. nevermind the fact that tony wanted them to sign their autonomy over to ross, who’s negligence and own agendas lead to the creation of the hulk and the abomination which saw bruce go on the run for years.

as someone who has also read a fair amount of mcu fics over the years, it has always annoyed me so much how team iron man supporters baby tony stark and villainise team cap because they dared to disagree with the narcissistic man child. i will skip basically any fic that has ‘not team cap friendly’ tagged cause it’s just absurd to me the way people portray team cap. tony stark is an incredibly flawed character and it just irks me the way his fans overlook all of his flaws and villainise anyone who doesnt worship the ground he walks on.

i’ve always believed that steve was right about the accords and that he should’ve at least told tony about bucky killing his parents, but now i dont even think steve had any obligation to tell tony that. bucky was steve’s best friend who had been a brainwashed POW for 70 years, and steve was loyal to bucky before anyone else. steve’s relationship with tony was tumultuous at best with tony always keeping steve at arms length because of things that werent even steve’s fault and he wouldnt at least hear steve out about the doctor, and people think steve shouldve just thrown bucky under the bus to tony? there is no easy way to tell someone that their parents didnt die the way they thought they did and that they were actually assassinated by your best friend. tony is volatile and unpredictable so there is no guarantee that he wouldn’t have tried to kill bucky regardless of how he found out about his parents. so steve was right to protect bucky from a hostile variable when it wasnt really bucky who killed tony’s parents. tony did deserve to know the truth about his parents, but steve wasnt obligated to give him that.
