did anyone follow me for anything
Just rewatched the d&d movie and was reminded how angry it made some people, specifically how Edgin was âemasculatedâ by not being the strongest member of the party, showing parental care, always reaching out to others, and constantly apologising as a means of reconsiliation.
The bad takes are out there for you to find, but I bring them up now specifically because thereâs been a recent tend among chuds doubling down on a desire to return (or retvrn if theyâre extra fashy) to âtaditionalâ or âstoicâ masculenity and claiming that any media that potreys men outside a position of unquestioned power is âdegredationâ.
Itâs that classic rightwing cocktail of insecurity and media illiteracy, completely unable to find value in a character who isnât a paper thin power fantasy they can project onto. Whatâs hilarious is that all the stuff they hate about Edgin are things that would make a normal person like him: Heâs an underdog, heâs a flawed but loving dad, heâs an inspiring person, and heâs a good leader! The chuds see these as unmanly traits, but what they mean is that these are traits they sorely lack and have thus excluded from their concept of what makes a man âmanlyâ. When youâre a selfish, offputting asshole whoâs affraid of being wrong, you want to hold up selfish, offputting assholes as the pinacle of what people like you should be.
Therapy Vs. Power Fantasy
Like a sage delving through cursed tomes to discover lost truths I recently I stumbled into some of the danker corners of the internet and abzorbed some absolutely vile takes. One of the recurring themes that popped up was people with rancid personal beleifs taking aim at the newer generations of TTRPG players (d&d and otherwise) for finding personal meaning or catharsis in their games, and how these new gamers were spoiled children who were getting overinvested.
Of course, they contrasted this âbitchâ behavior thereâs a lot of other mysoginistic, homophobic, and ableist slurs they like to throw in when youtube TOS isnât looking with the badass way they play the game, like theyâve been doing ever since they were kids, like they still do in their playrooms mancaves away from all those pissbabies and girl feelings.
This got me thinking, specifically about power fantasies, how vunrability relates to art, and how repressed men are terrified of seeming weak, and how the early d&d lore is laregely based around childhood or adolesent fears.
The tie between media illiteracy and conservatism is nothing new. To enjoy art, you have to open yourself to it, to the chance of elation or disapointment or challenge, to let it resonate with you in ways you canât nessisarily predict or control. The fascist conservative only likes art that reinforces who they perceive themselves to be, strokes their ego, and confirms their biases about how the world should be.
Itâs very telling then that when you see chuds talking shit about younger d&d players, they often throw âtherapyâ around as an insult, because much in the same way that art can touch something inside you, therapy is about challenging your ingranned self image, toxic ego, and beleifs⊠all things that chuds consider vital to their sense of self.
This is not to say that a power fantasy canât be theraputic: a good portion of my own writing is about vicariously smashing broken systems and ousting the corruption of the world.. but thereâs a fundimental difference in the power fantasy of raising your fist against unjust power and the fantasy of being the boot inflicting that power downwards on those you dislike.
What the chuds are trying to do here is use d&d (or whatever OSR itteration theyâve decided to parasite this week) as a balm for their insecurity, not ask questions about WHY theyâre scared of being weak, or what strength really is, but to have a space where they can larp as being the ubermench real MEN theyâve always fallen short of IRL.
Theyâre people who were bullied and ostrasized, and like good little bootlickers theyâve decided that the only thing wrong with their abuse was that they were the ones on the reciving end. Part of the reason theyâre so upset that this new generation of players is so âwokeâ is because the âwokeâ players refuse to put up with them being assholes, dening them the chance to establish themselves as the new top-rung in the abuser hierarchy.
Also, before I sign off, mad love to my friends in the OSR community, I know you have to put up with an above average number of these dipshits and while you prefer a different style of game to mine I know weâre all fighting the good fight for a better, more welcoming TTRPG hobby.

No one doing this should be allowed to call themselves a feminist.
The wealthy author escalated a social media spat that resulted in posting a photo from a 2023 event at the Institute of Economic Affairs in
Let's not beat around the bush: Children's author JK Rowling sexually harassed someone. In some jurisdictions, this would count as sexual abuse. JK Rowling has committed a sex crime against a woman and fell back on the old rape apologist standby of "she was asking for it".
I hope your nostalgia is worth it
âThe police spend very little of their time dealing with violent criminalsâindeed, police sociologists report that only about 10% of the average police officerâs time is devoted to criminal matters of any kind. Most of the remaining 90% is spent dealing with infractions of various administrative codes and regulations: all those rules about how and where one can eat, drink, smoke, sell, sit, walk, and drive. If two people punch each other, or even draw a knife on each other, police are unlikely to get involved. Drive down the street in a car without license plates, on the other hand, and the authorities will show up instantly, threatening all sorts of dire consequences if you donât do exactly what they tell you. The police, then, are essentially just bureaucrats with weapons. Their main role in society is to bring the threat of physical forceâeven, deathâinto situations where it would never have been otherwise invoked, such as the enforcement of civic ordinances about the sale of untaxed cigarettes.â
â An excerpt from Ferguson & the Criminalization of American Life by David Graeber (via actjustly)
since i think many will have had the memory slip with just how many other atrocities have occured in the past 11 years, or are simply too young to remember, the last bit about the sale of untaxed cigarettes isnât just some hypothetical, itâs a reference to the killing of eric garner
this is the origin of the slogan âi cant breatheâ, which was revived in the wake of the killing of george floyd.
On this day, 17 July 2014, Eric Garner was murdered by police enforcing a civic ordinance.
One chapter into Ulysses and I have 10 times more appreciation for that "Ogre barely even Literate!" meme
Everyone call Ogre stupid and it True! Ogre can only understand popular quotations like "Very well then, I contradict myself" and "Introibo ad altare Dei" not obscure references like "Thalatta!" and "the rage of Caliban at not seeing his face in a mirror" that contextualize the characters' perspective on life within the lens of culture and literature!
Ogre so dumb he isn't even aware of the best-known quotations of ancient Greek literature intended to expose the characterâs shallowness! At this rate Ogre will never get through Chapter 3!

I need a noncomprehensive history book that covers Known World History in time periods, like âin this century, all this shit was happening concurrentlyâ and not just all spread out so I have to piece it together like some unpaid uneducated scholar

The Timetables of History by Bernard Grun
I grew up with this book, which is frickinâ enormous, and it was endlessly fascinating to young me to pour over the side by side comparison of events taking place concurrently under different headings and in different parts of the world.
Or if you want something you can put on your wall, thereâs this:

Help a Disabled Trans Women Eat During an Awful Time
So I've been unable to work recently due to a new unidentified issue that's been making my pass out during my job, it's caused me to fall two times in the middle of my shifts over the last two weeks, and miss several other shifts due to passing out on breaks or at home on days I was going to work.
I work on my feet in a kitchen, and during my last fall I hit my head on a table as I fell, and needed a CT scan. I have been in and out of the hospital and every test has come back inconclusive.
I'm not currently able to support myself due to all the missed days at work, and could really use some help until I can figure this out

Sen. Bernie Moreno (R-Ohio), a close Trump ally, announced Thursday that he will introduce legislation to sanction Canada and Canadian officials over the huge wildfires that have poured smoke and haze across the United States, creating hazardous air-quality conditions. âIâll be introducing a bill next week to sanction Canada and the responsible Canadian government officials for this atrocity,â Moreno posted on social media.
âWe are done accepting apologies in place of action. If Canada will not manage its forests to prevent these fires, the United States will look elsewhere, and act on our own, to protect our people,â the GOP lawmakers wrote. âThat means our own agencies exploring direct involvement in cross-border fuel reduction and firefighting capacity. It means reconsidering how much benefit of the doubt this relationship continues to earn on an issue where American lungs are paying the price for Canadian inaction, year after year,â they warned.
America gonna douse Canada's forests in agent orange until they get their shit together.
vvvv in favor of this I think "your pollution killing someone (or statistically causing an additional death) outside your borders is a violation of our sovereignty & casus belli for us to do whatever environmental mitigations we want, by force if necessary" would be the funniest possible justification for warfare. president xi the global warming caused by the USA has taken too many lives parachute in 1 billion square kilometers of solar panels and enough spec-ops electricians to hook them up to the grid.

How is bubblegum political?
Given that one of the most popular and largest bubblegum brands(or owner of multiple of said brands) is the Wrigley Company, the very first paragraph under the History section in their wiki is more than sufficient especially given recent events.
"The company was founded on April 1, 1891, in Chicago, Illinois by William Wrigley Jr. Wrigley's gum was traditionally made out of chicle, sourced largely from Central America. In 1952, in response to Decree 900, land reforms attempting to end feudal working conditions for peasant farmers in Guatemala, Wrigley's discontinued purchasing chicle from that country."
Chewing gum as we know it today was discovered and popularized by Aztecs and Mayans before America was conquered by the Spanish, and these cultures are largely erased from its history and rarely, if ever, given credit for the discovery of it and for the other contributions they made to current civilization (chocolate, coffee, 365 day calendar, the concept of zero, etc.)
Chewing gum only made its way to the USA because the Mexican dictator Antonio LĂłpez de Santa Anna (who was exiled for his political crimes) sent it to Thomas Adams as part of his attempts to return to Mexico and regain political power and support.
Before chicle left Mexico, while the Spanish were in power, it became forbidden for adult women to chew it in public because a Spanish priest learned it was used for dental hygiene and was scandalised at the thought of grown women cleaning their teeth in public.
Going further back to pre-conquistador times, chicle was used in Mayan cultures to stave off hunger and thirst during long hours of grueling physical work.
And if we turn or focus to its source, the chicozapote trees from which chicle is made, have a whole controversial history of people trying to find the balance between protecting their ancestral practices of cultivating natural chicle and not overexploiting these trees to the point of extinction (I cannot find the source again, but at one point the tree species was projected to go completely extinct if they continued to be exploited)
Also most bubblegum and chewing gum these days is plastic, which isn't great for the environment. You can get some made with chicle if you shop around but it's a niche product, it's not something you can grab in the supermarket
