I've been working on a pornographic sci-fi setting. It's about an alien species with really depraved sexual practices that define their culture, and a human who's slowly drawn into accepting and enjoying them- while simultaneously fighting back against its worst elements.

But, the thing is, I offhandedly mentioned early on in the story that this race of aliens is really into old earth spy movies.

I, in real life, am not. I barely like movies at all actually. I don't have anything against spy movies specifically, but I've only ever seen a handful.

But. I just can't get it out of my head. The idea that these of all things are the one part of earth culture that these aliens just can't get enough of. My intuition tells me that there's something they'd find captivating about them. Something about the suaveness, the gender dynamics, the heroism. That there's themes I could implement related to this. That I have something to say here.

I'm just not sure what. And of course I'm not, because as I said, I've barely seen any spy movies.

So I had the thought that I should do something about that. Even aside from this writing project, why let myself have this big hole in my cultural knowledge? Wouldn't it be cool to be a spy movie expert? Wouldn't that give me something to talk about? Bet my dad would watch some of them with me too, good excuse to hang out. I don't have anything better to do until Deltarune chapters 3 and 4 come out in four days anyway...

So I started compiling a list. Firstly, all the James Bond movies, in order. I liked Glass Onion, so I should do all the Knives Out movies. Gazemaize says that Argylle is the worst movie of 2024, so I gotta give that a watch... Oceans 11 isn't a spy movie I think, but it came up on Netflix when I searched James Bond, and it's a classic and it's close enough, I should give it a shot... Oh, all the Austin Powers movies of course...

This went on for a while. I now have a list of 61 movies. EDIT: More than that now.

That's too many. Even just the James Bond movies would be too many. And I'm sure I'm missing plenty that should be on there, but I had to stop at some point.

I have no idea how I'm even going to afford to watch all of these. Even if I was comfortable with piracy, I'm not sure I'd want to roll the dice on accidentally downloading a virus 61 times.

But. I'm gonna try! I'll at least watch what I can! I'll probably get bored after two or three, but if I don't, then prepare to meet a version of me that has seen entirely too many spy movies.

Today's progress: Fixed the crash. (The game was accidentally adding to the list of taken skills when it shouldn't. I didn't actually fix that, but I did fix that provoking the game to crash, and it always adds duplicates of things already in the list, so it shouldn't matter.) Started hooking up abilities to the new mana and ammo systems, added a message to tell the player if they don't have enough to use the ability.

Today's progress: Added two new abilities, began implementing ammo and mana, to help make each type of attack feel different.

Mana regenerates a bit after each battle, but most enemies aren't weak to magic. A lot of enemies are weak to melee, and it doesn't have an associated resource, but it tends to deal low base damage. Ammo can only very occasionally be obtained, but you'll start with a fair bit of it, and ranged attacks tend to be things like guns, which deal very high base damage.

Just wanna pop in to mention that coming to MTG from YUGIOH, it's like, being in heaven, but the people don't even realize there's anything outside of paradise that they could be in instead.

The MTG rulebook is complex, yes. But do you have any idea what it's like to play a card game that DOESN'T HAVE ONE?

(I mean, yugioh does, but... Not really.)

Today's progress: The unlock system now works! I was able to set a default list of skills, and add to it when a condition is met, save and load that data, and so on!

Now I just need to make it so you can reset those unlocks in game, and come up with conditions for all the unlockables, and add a little pop-up to the side that notifies the player when they unlock something, and make the abilities togglable with a seal system like in Vampire Survivors, and and and and and...

Today's progress: removed the shader, manually applied an outline to everything, manually touched up art.

Fuck everything. Thanks to @ttinngames for trying to help me.

Okay, here's my problem.

The entire reason I want outlines in the first place is so that enemies and skills look less bad when they have something behind them. The issue is, sometimes an outline isn't enough.

The art of game-icons.net often relies a LOT on negative space. These I have to fill in if I don't want you seeing through them.

But that's hard, because sometimes there's no easy way to do that.

I can't just hit this with a fill tool! I have to manually draw in lines to fill the gaps!

And then there's ones where the negative space is like... most of the image.

I wouldn't even know where to draw the lines! I'm just gonna have to leave the gaps on this one! Which means the art will have an INCONSISTENT STYLE. FUCK.

...But in the end, it's what looks the best, and is achievable by me. It took about an hour to adjust all the art, which is I think less time than I spent trying to get those shaders to work- though of course, I'll have to do this for every icon I add now, which will add up over time. Ugh.

...How had I like, not put together that ectobiology was going to be a thing. Like. The Detritus kids obviously create themselves in accordance with the ultimate riddle as typical. I guess because the Earth C kids don't, I just never thought about it...

Also, TC Seer of Void almost for sure, right?

(We see moments later that this is the case, despite him not being able to see clearly, and the eye being hidden in Del'fi's mouth besides.)

If he isn't a Void player, then the above basically has to be a purposeful misdirect or consequence of something like inversion, the Void implications are SO blatant.

Thought there is also these lines, which could be seen as opposed, or further proof that he's a Seer and that Seer's of Void just have a weird relationship with the aspect:

^He's specifically talking about stepping into the LIGHT.^

^And he's outright condemning hiding as being silly.^
