opossum in my house. not really sure what to do about that tbh
it’s just chilling behind the couch rn but i feel like the inside of a house is maybe not a good place for an opossum to be
OPOSSUMS IN MY HOUSE MULTIPLE OF THEM. ITS GOT BABIES
this is the best view i can get you all
mama and her eleven large and healthy babies (pictured: not all of them) have been Removed Gently from my House
Something that happens a lot in non-binary spaces is that a new member of the community will ask a tone-deaf transphobic question like "Hi, AFAB here, I was wondering if any other AFAB NBs had advice about swimsuits? My AFAB chest means I can't wear swimsuits for AMABs," and an established community member will have to gently explain that not only are we are a community of people who often change their bodies to a degree that certificated sex becomes a useless way to describe anatomy, but we are also a community of people who often join the community explicitly to get away from our birth sex assignment, and so referring to people that way can be really offensive.
And no matter how gently this is pointed out, the newbie will often initially feel instinctively defensive towards what they perceive as scolding. Which means that when another community member comes along and says "Don't worry about the language police 🙄, many of us think AGAB language is fine, it's a useful way to refer to the kind of formative experiences you had as a child," the newbie will latch on to them like a life raft.
And yes, we live in a transphobic society, a lot of people coming into the trans community will have uninterrogated transphobic views, but that just makes them more vulnerable when there is always someone in the community willing to tell them "no, your transphobic views are fine actually, and in fact here are some more you might not have thought of!"
It means a sizeable chunk of newly-out NBs are swiftly radicalised into increasingly extreme transphobia and transmisogyny simply as a defense mechanism against having their own comments criticised. One day they're just happy to join a community where people supposedly don't judge you on your birth sex, and the next they're talking about the importance of "AGAB socialisation".
It's a really big problem and I don't know what we can do about it.
When I first came out as NB, I was harshly and rightfully called out for some of the transphobic shit I said. It was a deeply painful experience, and I still feel the sting of shame from some of those comments over 10 years later. It was also incredibly necessary and I credit that moment to a lot of my growth in the long term, and I wouldn't be half the woman I am today without that formative experience. It helped push me to learn more, listen better, and reflect on my words and actions so I could treat others with dignity.
If you are a newly out queer person, and you get called out for something you say or do, I want you to set aside the impulse to get defensive. It sucks when it happens, but you have to learn from it and not get suckered into taking the easy way out of dealing with that discomfort you feel. It's a necessary step towards growth.
The "TERF" acronym rolls of the tongue so well that it's easy to reach for any time you see someone be transphobic which is a problem because it's eroding the distinction between Random Guy Who Hates Trans People and someone who's actually subscribing to a failed feminist analytical framework.
If I were to take a wild guess I'd say the majority of pro-trans internet users can't accurately describe where the views of those two differ, and that's a problem for anyone seeking to avoid having actual TERF ideas get popularized in trans spaces.
A TERF is to transphobia, as an incel is to misogyny. A small slice of a much wider umbrella, with a disproportionately bigger impact online.
I know this is kind of a hot take but I think creating a religious ethnostate is bad
I actually think it is still bad even if it is a religious ethnostate for a highly oppressed ethnicity and religion. I just don’t think it’s a good idea
For anyone confused, an ethnostate is "a country populated by, or dominated by the interests of, a single racial or ethnic group."
This definition is taken from dictionary.com
Here is the Oxford dictionary definition, with a sentence example:
my super sustainable bmw
one of the funniest conversations I ever had with my ex was when they were still getting used to Celsius and asked me "what's 20 degrees?" and instead of converting it, I said "it's the highest your dad will ever let you set the thermostat and when you say you're cold he tells you to put on another sweater, we're not made of money" and they went "oh, 68"
the fact that this reference was that fucking precise was something they went on to tell people about for years.
👀👀 not gonna name names but SOME of u are sweet and kind and deserve the world and i am rooting for u
So many anti-science (and particularly, anti-vax) people apply their diet and orthorexia culture to medicine. That is one of the things you will hear over and over again. “I actually read the ingredients of this vaccine and it has [SUBSTANCE] in it so I will not let my child get vaccinated.” which is exactly how these people grocery shop, I’m sure. No understanding of chemistry, no research into why that ingredient is in there, what it is doing to help make the vaccine safe and effective and what amount would make it toxic to the human body. They will be like “Oh my god, there is hydrochloric acid in there! I’m not going to research into why it is in there (in small amounts as a PH stabilizer), it’s hydrochloric acid (the human body creates it naturally) and they’re trying to inject this into our children!”
i would almost love to meet one of these people and say ah yes i love drinking Dihydrogen Monoxide with heavy amounts of Citric Acid, Glucose and Limonene (this is a very terrible lemonaid) these ingredients are water, the sour of a lemon, sugar, and lemon flavoring
or just asking if they know the chemicals in a lemon.
Unironically, I saw someone say to avoid citric acid in food products (it’s a common preservative and acidifier, very safe in moderation, occurs naturally in fruits and vegetables) because it is made of black mold. Which is partially correct, Aspergillus niger produces high amounts of citric acid when fed properly BUT the mold is completely filtered out of the final refined product. SO MANY FOOD PRODUCTS ARE MADE WITH MOLD, this one doesn’t have actual mold in it, you are fearmongering about the evils of mold while it lives all around us all the time!
i think there's probably enough fantastical stories about high schoolers we can make fantastical stories about people at different points in their lives now
"i need to stop spending so much money on lunch" ➡ "maybe i could just buy some nice canned soups for easy lunches that don't make me sad" ➡ "why is canned soup so expensive" ➡ "i can just make some fucking soup" ➡ i don't actually feel like making soup ➡ i order a calzone ➡ "i need to stop spending so much money on lunch"
"cute little bento boxes will save me" ➡ it turns out that cute little bento boxes require time, money, or both ➡ i switch to meal prepping on weekends ➡ i start hitting sunday night and realizing that i have once again forgotten to make anything ➡ i switch to buying cup noodles and pb&j supplies ➡ "i'm so sick of eating like this. why do i even have this fucking job if i can't buy myself a delicious lunchtime treat. isn't this break room punishment enough. what is even the fucking point." ➡ i order a calzone ➡ "where did my paycheck go" ➡ "i need to stop spending so much money on lunch"

giant redwood trees really are so cool, they just have something incredibly special going on. it's hard to describe if you haven't seen them
a certain je ne sequoia, if you will
if this post has taught me anything, it's that a great number of people very proudly do not know there's a distinction between "giant redwood" and other redwoods
they got married btw
oh you’re not kidding
okay now that we’ve a had couple lesbian blockbusters and milfs are having a romance moment, we need to bring back the manic pixie dream girl. she was never fuckin suited to fixing all the problems of some boring twenty year old everyman, but you know who could actually benefit from a quirky free-spirited blue haired girl with pronouns (she/they)? a newly divorced forty-something mom who’s trying to learn how to be herself for the first time in her life
