Am I the only one who actually realizes the severity of Toby Rogers’ disorder? He technically has CIP, congenital insensitivity to pain. I mean.. sure, it sounds beneficial to anyone, right? Especially to someone like me, who has fibromyalgia- kind of the exact opposite of that- the pain sensors are heightened so I feel more pain than the usual person. But.. CIP can be dangerous as all hell. And NO ONE talks about how deadly it can really be, especially to a character like Ticci Toby. They can’t feel fevers- they can’t feel if they’ve broken a leg, broken any type of bone, can’t tell of something is internally wrong- but they can feel the pressure of it. But no pain. They cannot tell if something is wrong with their body and that in itself can be extremely dangerous. Pain tells you that you’ve been pushed too far- if you can’t feel pain… you won’t know something is terribly wrong. Bruises from running into things, cuts from the same reason- they won’t feel it. They can run around and bump into something. They can’t feel it. This can also cause some serious eye injuries, making them scratch their eyes to the point where children with this disorder have to wear goggles. This might explain Toby’s cataracts. He has issues with his eyes. Think about it.. People switch positions when they’re sitting to get rid of the discomfort on their joints and muscles. Extra wear and tear can happen to your body because of this disorder as well. The connection needed between the peripheral nerves and nociceptors are highly important, sending messages back and forth to the brain about pain. If those connections are severed, well… Pretty much, I’m a med student ranting about a character that I really love and can see the awful dangers behind having something like that. Toby is in a forest- he could easily cut, damage, bruise himself, hurt himself, fall and break something- and he would never know it. He is a literal time bomb with his injuries since he moves around so much. I’m honestly surprised I see no one talking about it- I’m just really passionate about medical things. If you’ve read this far- cool. Means I didn’t bore ya! But yeah. Just. It ain’t a blessin’.
